But he also talked about how feminism destroyed genders, which is an anti-feminist talking point.

Well we dont know much, like what that means on the games world. Imagine a world where there are no genders. Will it be bliss or might be problems? What if someone wanted to identify with a gender, like now someone is born male but wants to identify as a female. Extreme control over lifes and extreme equality (an equality that forces people to behave within certain limits) might not be the paradise everyone think would be.
I find this really interesting if its actually in the game.

People are mad because he worded it in a way that feminism is bad. He obviously meant that (in his game) feminism went out of control, but people cant understand it.
This thread is so amazing,in a way its like a dystopian future by itself where people cant have a different opinion.

Yeah, that's a bit weird. I can see how any pro gender, or pro race movement could eventually get out of control. I've seen this myself sometimes, where it's kinda sad that if anyone has a differing opinion, they are torn down and labeled for it like in this thread.

Egalitarianism is about true equality, where people have the same rights, and same privileges. I see at times though, like people think Joss Whedon is not a real feminist by the way he brings attention to certain stereotypes in his shows. Or that he's not allowed to speak on feminism because he's a man. This is hardly an equal viewpoint I feel, and takes the idea of feminism too far in the other direction where it becomes another form of discrimination.

I believe in equality, but when it turns into another form of segregation, I become afraid of the direction it might lead. I always think of the words of Martin Luther King Jr., and how he spoke of one day wishing to see boys and girls, from all races being able to sit side by side with no discrimination. This is the future I'd want to see, don't take away privileges from one person to elevate someone else.

Wow, I've never had my interest in a game go so high and then bottom out so quickly before lol.

Vile developer creates vile product (given the words from the developer himself).

Seems like the story on this one is just starting, Microsoft might have to come out with an explanation.

This is a "PR disaster for Microsoft" level of dumb.

Yep. This will be dominating the headlines come tomorrow. How they let this get through is beyond me.

Did someone not check what the game was about before putting it in the conference footage?

Wow...and I just showed this game off to high praise.

What a piece of shit. And is the creator actually admitting that gamergate was all about shitting on other people instead of "integrity"?

No, he is trying to isolate his voice as a call for ethics in journalism from the voices of those who used it as a platform to attack Zoe and Anita. He, in his own way, is adovating decency. Whether he is doing so in a constructive way is up for debate.

...you can do that now and it's hardly a dystopian hellhole

Jeez, I thought the themes the game was addressing sounded interesting but uh, this was not the direction I expected.

It doesn't seem like they're publishing, but it's a ~Console Launch Exclusive~, which presumably means Microsoft is providing some development/marketing/financial support.

I mean Microsoft already gave them a marquis spot on the biggest stage in the world providing more marketing support then they could ever dream of achieving otherwise.

Oh. Microsoft's not actually publishing this though are they?

She's in Microsoft Studios Publishing.

Here's the thing. Either Microsoft didn't know about the creator of this game and its supposed story which means they don't vet the people who they showcase during their press conference, or they did know but didn't care about giving a platform to toxic and terrible views. Which is why if Giant Bomb has any of Microsoft PR come on the show, they should be asked to clarify what and why this happened. And, it should be on Giant Bomb to ask serious questions if given the opportunity.

Are you under the impression that the agenda of feminism is to take rights away from men or something

Y'all talking about Roman Polanski, this is like if Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown were putting forward the message that drugging and raping women, even minors, is A-OK.

Obviously not that extreme, but it's hard to separate the art from the artist in this particular case.

It must be really easy too see everything in black and white politcally. I feel like that is a very american thing to do.

I've played games from people I disagree before. So what? It didn't kill me.

It's kinda funny that these kind of things always happen with Scifi/Cyberpunk games. Reminds me a lot of the Read Only Memories thing they tweeted out. Just reversed.

Really amusing to see as an 'outsider'.

I'll play it. There are too few cyberpunk games. For me to skip this one, the creator would need to do some truly horrible stuff. Having a different political opinion isn't enough.

If you think gg is just a political opinion, then you really don't know what you're talking about. It's always funny people like yourself pretending to be some enlightened outsider. You just enjoy your state of willfull ignorance. Not sure what you mean by it being an American thing. GG is a hate group. We go easy on hate groups compared to many other countries. All I can do is talk about them. In other countries they may be prosecuted.

What are you thinking it's gonna be like, I'm expecting it to be a nice little "women are a nice dessert but men are the main course" type thing

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1379589

What's the direction you think he'll go in?

I was thinking the aim would be to express that "bisexuality isn't a real gender/sexual orientation" with the justification that "bisexuality only exists due to gender confusion born from feminism".

On one hand, it'd be unbelievably tone deaf since he did bring up his bisexual main character in a paragraph about how he totally for real for real supports strong female roles in gaming and wants to subvert cliches and offer diversity. I'm not really buying into this given his participation in GamerGate, but I can't imagine him touting his bisexual main character as evidence of how tolerant he is if that's the message he's going for. Just seems unbelievable.

On the other hand, he's also on the record saying one of the key themes of his game is "feminism erasing genders", and I don't think he's talking about bi-erasure. Not sure how else that theme would be expressed.

I'll bookmark and read it.

I'm not trying to be contrarion but I also don't see anything particularly outrageous about the Twitter picture AuthenticM quoted. Is that also fine out of context, and if so, is there a bigger story I could read up on regarding that specific Twitter rant?

Do you honestly think you're fooling anyone right now? Just drop the act. The tweets are as clear cut a case of GG shitposting there ever was. It's not even a slightly debatable thing, he literally says modern feminism is evil.

Oh, I agree, but when a dev hashtags "gamergate" on a whole swath of posts, I am skeptical over their ability to deliver a nuanced and thought-provoking narrative.

I'm not putting on any fucking act. Call me an idiot/stupid/ignorant whatever you want. Maybe I need re-education. But god dammit this comment in particular has really annoyed me - accusing me of putting an act; it's making me more upset than it should. I'll return to the thread tomorrow after reading the entire idlethumbs.net thread that was linked here before. And I'm going to err on the side of "Yep, this Last Night creator is probably a pretty shitty person" based off the comments in this thread.

Not putting on any act.

"I also don't buy the patriarchy stuff. Maybe it applies in the USA, but I live in Paris, and here in France, virility is not encouraged at all, sensitive men and intelligence are a lot more appreciated than "being a tough guy" and muscles. Most masculine behaviors are totally prohibited and are considered very macho here."

lol

also ya know, read the rest of what he's been saying

nevermind the fact that France has one of the worst rates of domestic violence in all of Europe.

Y'all talking about Roman Polanski, this is like if Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown were putting forward the message that drugging and raping women, even minors, is A-OK.

To be fair, a major point of Chinatown is a guy getting a way with incestuous statutory rape. Still, this game in particular is a case in which it is virtually impossible to separate the artist from the art when it's very clear a lot of the artist's negative opinions are apparent in the themes of this game.

The last tweet 'liked' by the game's writer gives a clue as to what sort of dude he is.

oyYffgh.png

Kind of giving credence to my gut feeling that he's pulling the very Sianos trick in that post of using words with strong connotations that when taken purely denotatively gives an entirely different message.

Like some "actually, the diversity I was talking about was 'diversity of perspective', the most important diversity!" kind of nonsense.

He does, but he's the villain, and he is rightfully demonized for that.

Granted, I've only read the screenplay, but I don't imagine that it's that different in the film proper.

No, but some feminists do seem to want to put females on a pedestal, rather than show them on equal footing.

Not sure who or what you're referring to but most likely what you view as a pedestal, some of us view it as being able to not be oppressed. "When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression" probably applies to you.

Are you serious? Do you mean Feminism?

No rights are being taken away, christ.
