Spider-Man: Homecoming review thread [92% RT]

I like spider-man, but at this point Marvel movies are becoming so formulaic and stale. The best word to describe MCU movies at this point is "shallow" especially compared to movies like Logan. I really hope Marvel will soon take a risk and deviate from the "snarky superhero beats up bad guys for two hours with no thematic purpose" formula that we have seen over and over. Doesn't seem like this one deviates much unfortunately.

"Fun" in the same way that getting a tooth pulled is.

That's the funny part about that word being some negative. Most any good movie is fun. The Dark Knight trilogy was fun.

SS was the "hey, fellow kids" of movies trying to be fun.

Ergo, it didn't work.

Guys, guys, I know, I just wanna get that shit out of the way quickly so we can focus on the reviews for this movie alone.

Which of course won't happen

BvS was fun too.

Logan works as well as it does because it has 17 years of history behind it and is deliberately written as the last Wolverine story (or at least, the last Hugh Jackman Wolverine story). It's pretty unrealistic to expect that of every superhero movie...especially one that's rebooting a franchise!

While the Marvel Netflix series have touted their identity as “street-level heroes,” the Spider-Man of Spider-Man: Homecoming feels like a better realization of that promise. He’s still got superpowers, and he’s working against a powerful villain that can wreak havoc, but Watts always wants us to know that this Spider-Man lives among us. He’s not a billionaire or a demigod or a super soldier. He has superpowers, but he’s also visiting his local bodega and swinging through the suburbs. Homecoming is a movie that emphasizes the “neighborhood” part of “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Yesssssssssssss!!!!!!

You guys should just ignore Ahasverus.

Anyways. Should be a fun time at the movies and taking my sister for her birthday to watch it. She's a huge spider man fan.

"It doesn't have dramatic worth, or a great story, or is remarkable in any sense.. but it's FUN, like, it has HUMOR which is so UNIQUE, 9/10 the future of super hero movies".

Give me a break. Spider-Man is one of those characters that have like lots of material to take inspiration from to make a legit great story, be it on high school or adult setting, you name it. But Disney genericness knows no bounds.

I'd rather have another Sony movie.

And sadly it didn't prove me wrong.

You really complaining that a Spiderman Movie has Fun, and Humor?

Am I taking crazy pills?

Ok, now what's your reaction to this one:
I'd be dissapointed, but thankfully it did have very great story and dramatic depth. That wasn't the main takeaway of its reviews either. Most were calling it a triumph for the whole genre. This one is more like "it's another one, it's inoffensive, you'll laugh I guess?".

This is Spider-Man we're talking about. The cream of the crop. If your Spider-Man movie isn't a show stopper you're doing it wrong.

Yeah it's hard for me to get excited about any of them. Even BP after that fire trailer I'm not overly hyped for.

But despite the all too similar feeling I get out of every mcu movie, some of the good ones are pretty enjoyable in theaters. Plus Spider-Man is always dope. Even the shitty Andrew Garfield movies had a few brief moments of the main character which I really liked.

You'd think after all the other superhero movie failures and missed attempts at creating shared universes that people would understand if it was really as easy as having a formula that guaranteed critical and commercial success, that every studio would be doing it by now.

You more than anyone else knows that Spider-Man didn't go big because of its humor alone, but because those jokes were used in great stories that made use of some of the best developed characters in the medium.

Hell, DCEU went "formulaic".

It was just the wrong formula. Which they adjusted a tad for Wonder Woman. Here's hoping.

But yeah, not sure what anyone was expecting here. This has always looked like the definitive Spider-Man film. That's what it's reviewing like too.

so you acknowledge that it's a Spider Man movie yet your disappointment somehow stems from it being s Spider Man movie

huh

Seems to me like people are complaining that the movie just seems fun. You can have a fun movie with a great story, characters, villains, etc, but that review doesn't really tell us that.

Never had any doubt about this being great once the MCU deal was announced.

If this is genuinely good, I'll definitely be hugely relieved. A lot of what I'd been seeing from the film in the marketing was concerning me...and as a huge Spider-Man fan (my favourite Marvel character), it would definitely have been dissapointing if Marvel bungled their first crack at the webslinger in some way.

Of course, I was always going to see it the instant it came out here in the UK, but to know this is a genuinely good Spider-Man movie would be a huge relief. Now I just have to worry about whether it'll be "Doctor Strange" good ("fun", but ultimately utterly forgettable) or a higher level of quality entirely.

Yeah, it does. You need to read more than just the blurb.
