Spider-Man: Homecoming review thread [92% RT]

I don't understand the big love for Winter Soldier. Likely that love comes from deep insight and fandom of the comics. The spy thriller aspects doesn't really work with demi-gods imo. Civil War was much more my thing, similarly GotG2 and aspects of Dr.Strange.

Very happy about Spider-Man reception. Sounds really good in all aspects to me.

Helmet-less Cap was good but I don't think any helmet design would've worked on that outfit. The clothing was just too fitting and streamlined for a helmet to not stand out.

I didn't like Ultron's face. Would've much preferred the gaping maw from the comics.

This is where they lost me with Ultron's design. Mark 1 was terrifying and awesome, a great take on the characters development. Ultron Prime was expressive and still growing which makes sense as to why he looks more man than machine.

Ultron's final form, which he upgrades to when he has given up on improving humanity and helping them survive, is when we should have gotten the classic gaping maw design. He had given up on his own sense of humanity at that point and that's when we should have gotten the cold, calculating Ultron we know and love.

True, but Sony are already in a situation where they had to bring in another studio to basically show them how to make Spider-Man films. There's only so much a corporate ego can take before something has to give.

Corporate or not, different film studios and producers work together all the time... It's part of how the movie business works.

Maybe Sony doesn't like the fact that they can't use Spidey in their spinoffs (for now) so would like to get full control of their character back, but they've basically left their egos aside when they gave the keys to Marvel.

The ads for this movie are everywhere. Great reviews too but for some reason I kinda don't have much interest.

It's already happening. Here's a quote from Amy Pascal when asked about Venom and Spider-Man appearing together.

I'm telling you now, once Spider-Man's deal with Marvel Studios is done (after Homecoming 2) he's moving straight into Silver Sable country, they aren't even trying to hide the fact at this point.

Make your peace with it now.

I would honestly think even the general audience that doesn't know or care about comics would be turned off by that. So much of this movie's success is about to hinge on "hey guys, this one's gonna be an Avenger!" When that's vacant from marketing…

I think Sony's dumb enough to do it, but it is by no means the logical play. Their issue is they hate that they have the biggest superhero on the planet and no universe to put around him. They're the only studio in the genre that can't make a universe with their property, so they're trying to with Black Cat and Venom when they need to just accept it isn't gonna work for them.

They need to take the $1 billion this movie is gonna make at the box office and be happy.

No one wants to a Spider-Man movie from Sony. They want to a Spider-Man in the MCU movie. I'd imagine trying to insert this Spidey into their "Spiderverse" would just hurt them in the long run after he becomes established as a part of the MCU for years.

A1 Cap's costume was intentionally designed to look like his old-fashioned trading cards and comics costumes, so it works in-universe, at least.
Marvel is obviously not ashamed of it since he wears the same one in his Homecoming PSA cameos.

Not for me, at least! I don't know shit about the comics and I love that movie. I just think it's a really slick film and I enjoy Evans, Johansson, and Stan in it a lot. I wish it had a stronger and less obvious villain, but other than that I think it's great.

To be clear Sony and Marvel working in this way is completely unprecedented. There has never been a situation before where one studio has 'lent out' it's biggest franchise to a rival studio to make the film for them.

This is the equivalent of Nintendo getting Sony's Media Molecule studio make a Super Mario game for the Switch.

Agreed. But it's worth remembering that Sony no longer have any merchandise rights or back end financial involvement with the merchandise from the Spider-Man films. All Sony get is the money from the box office etc. They are basically trying to squeeze every penny they can.

I get that, it's just... Well, it sucks.

I do like that they're bringing it back for Homecoming, though.

Can't seem to get excited for this one. Of all the big releases this month, (Dunkirk, Baby Driver and Apes) Spidey interests me the least.

Glad it's reviewing well tho and I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I eventually see it.

Yeah. Which would dictate staying they asses in the MCU, I'd think.

Not at all. I could care less about the comics. Iron Man is probably the leanest and tightest MCU movie due to the nature of being the first, but Winter Soldier is a close second, combined with the best action, the bet pacing, the best finale, the greatest sense of tension and stakes, and being the movie that made Cap the coolest hero in the MCU.

Fun Fact: Amy Pascal doesn't work for Sony anymore. Venom, Silver & Black, etc., are not her projects. She has no say on any of this. They gave her this "job" to let her save face while they gave her the boot.

Do you think most movie critics have deep insights into, and a fandom for, Captain America/Winter Soldier comics?

Down to 92%. #Abandon ship! Lol!

Because it's a very entertaining film with thriller aspects to it, a lot of people really liked it, myself included.

She's producing Venom. Not sure if she's involved in that Silver and Black movie though.

Man, I never expected the guy from Waverly Films would end up directing a huge ass Marvel movie

Proud of him

I don't even know if I really want to know before seeing the movie or not... but does Shocker play any real role in this? Only saw the first trailer since I heard the later ones spoil a lot of the movie but I'm just curious if my soft boy will be making a proper appearance, and not just a 2 minute cameo without a proper suit.

This is a question for another thread

Super heroes then.
I'm glad people enjoys it though. I just don't grasp why it so often comes up as the 'reference' movie in the MCU.

Hey if it aint your bag, nothing wrong with that. As for why people like it so much though,

- Great action
- Good performances
- Undeniable major changes to the MCU status quo
- More personal story alongside the typical word ending plot
- Tone is unlike most other MCU movies
