The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ |OT| 200 More Hours of Bad Keeper Runs

I was interested in buying this game. I was just wondering what would be the best version for me to get if I'm new to the series? Other people recommended just getting Afterbirth for beginners to the series then get Afterbirth+ if I really get into it. Or should I just get the base game for now?

Afterbirth is an expansion for Rebirth. so just get Rebirth, which has hundreds of hours of gameplay just by itself, and if you like it get Afterbirth and Afterbirth+

Hi guys, its there any way to demo this game? I'd like to try it out before forking 40 bucks for the switch version.
If you've been a Playstation Plus subscriber for a while, you may have added that version of the game to your library without realizing it. Would give you an opportunity to take Isaac for a test drive before diving in fully on the Switch.

That said, scoping out streams of the game will give you a pretty good idea of what you're in for.

Man, I'm really struggling with Keeper. I think I must have abused the hell out of cloud saves with The Lost on the Vita because I'm not even able to make it to the Foot on these Keeper runs.

What's worse is that I've put some amazing builds together while getting that far. I know what starting items to nab, what to focus on, how to exploit Devil Deals via Strength Card, Judas' Tongue and leaving Health Up items on the floor.. I've been abusing the hell out of Blood Donation machines and Sacrifice Rooms.

I know I'll have an easier time once I have Wooden Nickel unlocked but even the few times I've nabbed it in the shop it seems to barely pay out. I even had a Swallowed Penny+Holy Mantle+Head of the Keeper run go up in smoke due to not having enough speed or damage.

I think my best run had me accidentally kill myself on a Blood Donation machine because I wasn't thinking. It's always a brief lack of focus that inevitably kills me. Greed's Gullet would afford me some margin of error but I've literally found it once and died before I could even put any sort of build together to supplement it.

So in my continued efforts to try and find more information regarding the Afterbirth+ release for PS4 I read some Steam reviews for it. I was honestly surprised at the amount of bad reviews the expansion got on Steam, with 2120 positive reviews and 1747 negative ones (so "Mixed"). Anyone have some insight on this? Was it a bad launch that has been patched since?

Also there were plenty of reviews who mentioned Antibirth, a (free) fan-made expansion for the original Rebirth version. Anyone tried that one?

Antibirth is good, but not for beginners.
About the reviews, the community is very opinionated, and some people didn't like some changes to the game. Also UltraGreed mode.

See this post from launch.

The unfair spawns, mimics, voids have been fixed. But there's no fixing the rest.

I see, thanks for the info. I really wonder whatever happened to the PS4 (and Xbox) release, since there's been zero news regarding it other than "spring 2017" in December. It seems Nicalis and Edmund just focus on Switch and PC, which makes me wonder if they had any falling out with Sony and Microsoft.

Nicalis is just spectacularly unorganized. Everyone of their ports takes way longer than what they prospect. Ironically this also hurts their sales, because they cause people to wait for their preferred version instead of buying the available one.

Huh, I see. Well, hopefully that means that it will come one day, I'd prefer that over never at least. It doesn't help that they refuse to give any information regarding it, but I guess that's not uncommon for developers.

Remember when Booster Packs were a thing?
Remember when they were supposed to be monthly?

I would go Rebirth to completion --> Afterbirth to completion then Afterbirth+

I feel if you jump in all at once/ two at a time then it would be overwhelming. Going one by one will make things more manageable I feel

I concur with this... although the Switch progression system largely implements this within the game structure itself and would make the other versions palatable as well should they adopt it.

Made it to Womb II with the Keeper before dying yesterday. I'm chalking that up as progress.

Rebirth completion sucks without Holy Mantle Lost. Mega Satan is also more annoying to get to, but he isn't even part of Tebirth's completion so I guess it doesn't really matter

How to click on "My Stuff" in Switch version?

When I pause the game, there is a box called "My Stuff", showing my power-ups - icons only. How can I highlight the power-up and see what the icon says? It's just icons.

Picked this up on Switch. Played a few runs earlier, farthest I've made it is the 3rd floor/dungeon/whatever you want to call it. Pretty terrible at it so far. No clue what items do or what I'm doing, but the random aspect is pretty fun. I assume just keep playing and eventually I'll learn what things do? I somehow managed to unlock Magdalene and a few challenges, but not sure how.

The nice thing about the game is that, for the most part, you'll unlock almost everything just by playing the game. There's a few little unlocks that you'll probably have to look up how to do, but you won't even be able to do them until you get a lot better, anyway, so it's not a big deal. A lot of the characters list how to unlock them on the character select screen. From what I remember, you unlock Maggie by having over a certain number of heart containers on a run.

But yes, for the most part, you just keep attempting runs on the game until you beat it, then you do it again and again, as the game will keep changing and opening more stuff up the more times you beat it.

Have to say, I really wish I'd saved the seed for a run I had today, because it was just ridiculously cheesy. I played Azazel, and on the first floor, right in front of the bossroom, there was an Angel chest or whatever they're called, and inside was Tammy's Head.

Needless to say it was, uh, the easiest run I've ever done - the only one where I've gotten to Mom's Heart, actually. God, it was so cathartic, just...winning by pressing R2 every time. So, so cathartic....

So the other week I finally beat Greedier with The Lost and Keeper, one after the other, after hours of trying.

Yesterday I finally beat Mega Satan with The Lost and Keeper, one after the other, after hours of trying.

Today, I finally beat the Hush and Delirium with The Lost and Keeper, one after the other, after hours of trying.

Momentum is weird.

Now I just gotta find the unlocked items and full completion is mine, 450 hours in.

I hit some room after beating Mom that had me fighting a shitton of bosses, what was up with that?

Also, is there a decent place with Switch version seeds? I enjoy playing as is, but I wouldn't mind an easier way to unlock stuff.

if you beat Mom in under 20 minutes a boss rush room opens up. beating it with each character unlocks new items

You made it to the boss rush. It opens up if you made it to and beat mom in less than 20 mins

Can't unlock stuff using seeds

A rundown of what's new:
4 New Items!
• Pop! (formerly Bank Shot) by Ashkait and Scayze! The pair returns with another implemented mod in the form of Pop! A reworking of their Bank Shot (a billiard-based tear effect), this item has Isaac firing eyeballs which bounce off one another, much like pool balls—hence the original effect.
• 7 Seals by Ashkait and Scayze! Sheesh, play favorites much, Nicalis? I kid, love you both (/u/Ashkain is a nerd tbh). This familiar spawns one of the Horsemen, each with their own effects! While they have been reworked to each only spawn a regular blue fly, rather than their own respective flies, the item is still pretty neat.
• Angel Prism (formerly Thought) by Erfly & Electoon! Renamed for some odd reason, this familiar circles Isaac, acting as a prismatic reflection of his tears! On firing into, 4 tears of different colors are created for a beautiful destructive effect. It's pretty neat! Oh, and it synergizes wonderfully with Analog Stick!
• Mr. ME! (formerly Mr. Meeseeks) by Jean-Alphonse! This 4-room charge active item gives you a dutiful little Lost friend, which will do your bidding, so long as you give him your attention. He can open doors, steal you an item, grind enemies down to a pulp, and more. And obviously, the mod is based off of Mr. Meeseeks from Rick & Morty! It's a rad item, go check it out.
A New Trinket!
• Door Stop by Strawrat and CupertinoEffect! This trinket causes the door to remain open on entering a room for the first time!
Misc Changes
New Eden hairstyles by This Guy, and a few other contributors! Look suaver as you crush enemies in the Basement!
The mirror now properly breaks! Woo!
The charge bar has finally been removed from Forget-Me-Now!

The one alternative to this approach - and a good way to cheese boss rush unlocks if your're not adept at speed running - is if you pop Mama Mega on Depths II.
That'll also grant access to the Boss Rush if you're taking your sweet time with a breaking run.

Brimstone + Angel Prism

gnarly

Awesome that Thought (now called Angel Prism for some reason) got in. New S tier Angel Room item.

It's basically quad shot with no real downside
but it's an orbital with a wide radius. it's hardly just like having quadshot

Can't play with mods. My performance drops as soon as I enable mods. It's super weird.
It's the LUA interpreting. Cosmetic mods shouldn't have much impact but anything that interacts with the games base systems requires additional number crunching and that seems to use considerable CPU cycles.

I got Mr ME in the chest, and tried using him in that first room with the Mega Satan door, wondering if he would open it. he just picked up a pedestal item and moved it over a little bit. dumb item.

I got Pop! too but I died pretty much right aftr getting it, so I don't have much to say.

Shouldn't be a problem. I mean, I can run BF1@1440p ultra at over 60fps
