Wkd BO 07•21-23•17 - Slam Dunk' for Nolan, Apes escape, not rough Girl's Trip, Luc

Spider-Man Homecoming, Dunkirk and War of the Planet of the Apes all had their US release within a week of my bday. Only War hasn't been released here yet, that's why it's underperforming.

Only movie coming out in November close to my birthday(and it isn't even that close since my birthday is the 4th)is JL.

Ragnarok on the 3rd.

The Last Knight came out the weekend before my birthday this year.

I do have Jurassic World 2 next year and Incredibles 2 the year after though.

My birthday is a couple of days away from my nephew's and that little monster is gonna make me take him to Yo-Kai Watch: the Movie. Atomic Blonde will come out the same day here, ugh.

My birthday helped bomb King Arthur. You are all welcome.

I pray to the universe that Aladdin is the most un-Guy Ritchie movie that Guy Ritchie has ever made. Like Disney just has a gang of producers on set every day ready to keep him from fucking it up.

Force Awakens & Rogue One opened the day before and the day of my birthday, respectively.

Also Star Wars came out the year of my birth.

To keep it BO: How probable is a weekend-to-weekend drop for Dunkirk of 40-45%

Word of mouth on it seems stronger than I thought it was earlier in the week.

I figure if they got Guy Ritchie the producers want something Snatch-ish. Lock Stock-ish.

But you know - Disneyed.
Snatch and Lock Stock are good movies but.... they never achieved the same commercial success as Sherlock. I don't see why the producers will go for that style of movie instead of something that has proven to be a success.

I haven't seen King Arthur BTW so no idea how Guy Ritchie has made the movie. He used to be one of my favorite director as I was introduced to Snatch but then his latest work isn't really that great. Sherlock was okay.

I dunno. The animated Aladdin's structure and setpieces allow for that sort of interpretation pretty easily, I think.

Like, if you're looking at that movie, and trying to imagine how to transplant it to live action and how it might move in that way, getting the guy who has made more than a few movies about street-level shenaniganery makes some level of sense.

(don't mistake this for me saying he's a perfect match or that he won't fucking botch it)

Wait. Guy Ritchie is the director for Aladdin?

Hmm. Guess I can't judge since the only films I've seen of him are Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels.

Nah, I can actually see it after you mentioned it, and weirdly enough I could see it work.

It just doesn't seem like something Disney would do with their tried and true guaranteed Blockbuster successes of animated musical film adaptations. But maybe I'm not giving Disney enough credit to take some chances.

The Next Amazing Spider-Man would have been looking at Transformers 5 numbers, so Sony should be happy that they got a 5 year repreive on their only major franchise.

Deadline is saying $8M for Dunkirk, up to $10M for Emoji, $7.5M for Atomic Blonde, and $5M for Girls Trip on Friday based on early matinees.

That's definitely what I want out of this

1:1 Disney remakes are pointless. Beauty and the Beast was pretty damn boring. Took an excellent cartoon and made the pacing glacial and took all the charm out of it

The best part of Beauty and the Beast was the credits

They somehow made the best part of San Junpiero (which I just watched this week, oh mah gawd) do nothing

But Michael B. Jordan has been headlining critical and successful films from the indie Fruitvale Station, to Creed, to the upcoming Coogler collaboration in Wrong Answer.

They're building Michael B. Jordan the correct way to be a leading man in Hollywood.

I am happy to see him getting success at a young age. Most black actors don't get successful until their 40s

What is the girls trip drop looking like?

That's a little over 50% Friday-to-Friday, including previews, right?

8mil is just barely over its Discount Tuesday take.

That's not all that uncommon. Check out Wonder Woman's Fridays compared to the preceding Tuesdays: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=wonderwoman.htm

$8M Friday is probably around $27M for the weekend, unless the Saturday bump is poor.

What is the girls trip drop looking like?

Probably a bit less than 50% if $5M holds.
