When a brand mitigating damage does a better job than the goverment.

Contrast Trump with Obama speaking about Sandy Hook here. Obama was in clear emotional anguish and had to exert every ounce of self-control he possessed to not lash out at our insane gun laws.

One is a leader worthy of respect and admiration, the other is an embarrassment and a terrible indictment on the character of the country.

Gulf is achingly obvious. No politician is perfect but senior politicians and leaders should really at minimum seem to actually give a damn about the people they represent.

Come on Trump. I hate him and think he's a total scumbag...but do the right thing...

There is no right thing at this point. He could go after them in a statement but the Nazi groups already know that he is behind them and tacitly support them. Being forced into making a statement otherwise doesn't mean anything.

What are the odds that Trump's second statement ends up being worse than the first?

Only if he takes questions after or goes off script. CNN talking about what he is supposed to say, will directly name the hate groups and condemn them apparently.

We shall see. 2 min warning on CNN

Those groups he condemns will just think this statement was forced out by the GOP establishment. They know that Donald has their backs from his initial statement. The damage has already been done.

It frankly doesn't matter what he says now. He had three opportunities to call the white supremacists out; when he was at the podium and the two times reporters gave him a chance to denounce them.

A situation like that required an immediate response. Anything he says now is just going to be damage control.

I hope he talks about the great unemployment numbers again, because that was super on topic the first time.

OH, he's starting out with trade deals. Cool.

Trump CAN'T call out white supremacists, Nazis, KKK, etc. David Duke and his people will be fucking furious at him.

I think most of them would be fine with it, honestly- white supremacist groups have dealt with politicians denouncing them but also supporting them via dog whistles for years. When he was wishy-washy about denouncing the KKK during the campaign I think David Duke said something along the lines of "nah it's cool if he says he doesn't like us, we know he has to do that to get elected."

But the thing with Trump is that he's a giant narcissist who loses his shit at the slightest offense, and he's also self-absorbed enough to think that that's how everyone is. It's not even so much that he outright agrees with people like David Duke and Richard Spencer (I kinda read him as racist but not quite that kind of racist, if that makes any sense,) he just knows that they support him and thinks that they'll stop supporting him if he denounces their cause, because that's exactly what he'd do if it were him.

The only way any condemnation would have any meaning is Trump opposing his very own racist actions and word, begging for forgiveness, being able to name precisely why he was wrong and fire all the racists surrounding him.

Aka hell freezes over.
