Controversial Bodybuilder and Youtuber Rich Piana Dies After Medical Emergency

Sad, hopefully this opens peoples eyes to the dangers of drugs.

In his case: I doubt it was just the roids. I mean look at the man, he's an abomination!

There is so much mass there that his heart must have been working harder than a non unionized staffer of Trump that has to bring him good news ;).

Yeah they are responsible for their action but your statement via let them go crazy with it is just irresponsible. Steroids are drugs. Like any other drug, nobody should go crazy with it. It's medically ignorant and logically unsound. It leads to abuse and death.

Let the individuals do what they want to do. The sports leagues or whatever federation they are involved in can monitor it.

Doesn't matter. They're a cancer on sports.

I don't think you realize how much PED use is rampant in sports and how bad watching it would be if they were all gone.

I couldn't care less about that but every sport needs zero-tolerance+++
There's some great work being done in many confederations, but bodybuilding is by far the worst.

Only use PEDs when you think it is okay to use it. Gotcha.

Modern bb is the problem, not the roids.

Arnold and his generation took steroids too, and while a few of them may have had issues, many of them lived long lives (or are still alive) and died of common things that people NOT on PEDs die of.

The difference is the size of the stack that modern BBs take, and insulin. Today, people (like the late Rich Piana) take a fucking SHITTON of 'roids. Combined with crazy high dosages of HGH and Insulin, and small wonder that guys today develop issues early on.

Additionally, the steroids you can get today, due to the wonders of the Internet, are both easily accessible and, a lot of times, not of pharmacutical grade quality. It's some shit that they're mixing in a basement somewhere and selling for cheap online. God knows what you're pumping into your system. Arnold's generation was getting the real deal, and didn't take nearly as much of it. That's why they looked different. They were very very muscled, yes. But also athletic looking. Almost sleek. Nowadays? Muscle guts and bloated, synthol injected bodies are the norm.

Arnold himself has commented on how downhill bodybuilding as a whole has gone.
I blame the modern pro bodybuilding organizations for this. They keep encouraging these guys to get bigger and freakier and there's a natural trickle down effect on the normal joes.

I saw a video of Kai Green the other day and he doesn't even look human anymore. It's like he's a sci-fi shooter villian designed by the art team at EPIC Games.

Schwarzenegger is 70 and still looks pretty healthy. Were the steroids different back then or is he just lucky/rich so he can bypass a lot of common problems.

Didn't he have heart surgery because of his steroid abuse when he was younger. He was lucky.

Yup, these judges give zero fucks, they prefer bloated abs and shoulder pads to Frank Zanes perfect physique, its insane.

They're a wonder drug in medicine and for those recovering from injuries.

Guess which one actually matters?
And they are available for use for those purposes under the direct medical supervision of a medical professional so what's your point?

I've read there's more emphasis on the symmetry and whatnot in physique competitions? I know I read a story about quite guys who got out of competitive bodybuilding because there was no way to do it safely. Sounds like there are more competitions in the works to encourage actual aesthetics over just BIG.

"Macho Man" Randy Savage was another case of what the steroid-cocaine combination does to you. You're essentially blowing up your heart.

Either one is bad enough on it's own, but nobody will live too long on both. This guy took the steroid dosage to next levels so I doubt he even would have needed too much coke for this outcome to be guaranteed.

There are ways to mitigate the side effects of steroids. Blood pressure medication (telmisartan has been shown to reduce to reduce left venticular hypertropyhy of the heart which steroids are known to cause. Niacin or statins for cholesterol increase. It sounds like this guy overdosed on cocaine so I'd hate for steroids to be put to 100% of the blame. Obviously they were a factor but lots of people are on testosterone replacement therapy through their doctors or even growth hormone replacement and to have that taken away or have less doctors be inclined to prescribe them for patients who need them would suck. Long term steroid abuse alongside an unhealthy lifestyle and narcotic use will lead to what happened to Rich. RIP.

Steroids and cocaine is a great way for your heart to nope the fuck out and quit working.

Dude looked like a real life gears of war character though so there's that.

ITT: people drawing hasty conclusions about somebody's death. Initial reports state that he died from a cocaine OD, and as much as some of you would like steroids to be the main cause of his death, they weren't.

who just ods from using cocaine? someone with a fucked up heart.

Left humanity behind :(

Respected him a lot more than your stand fitness models/bodybuilders due to how open he was about his cycling. I'm pretty sure he's flat out said don't do what I do because it's not safe. He'd eat a pint of ice cream before bedtime!

Hate these ripped to shreds guys acting like they're clean, just admit your taking shit.

Sad how many bodybuilding YouTube personalities have died even since I just got into fitness a few years back.

That isn't relevant to anything.

It's relevant to this:

Better drugs are the biggest reason we live to 80 now. Table salt and sugar are drugs or are drug-adjacent (opinions are mixed), and sodium and glucose are necessary for survival.
Doesn't matter. They're a cancer on sports.

So because something is "a cancer on sports," the fact that they're allowing people to live healthier lives "doesn't matter"?

There is a conceptual wall between PED and anything else you want to label a "drug".

"anything else you want to label a "drug""?
lol

I don't even know why you're conflating PED and medicine. It's intellectually dishonest. I never said these things shouldn't exist. I said nothing justifies taking them in the context of sports performance.

Isn't this the dude who hit a disabled "fan" for either talking shit online or something when they met up? Remember seeing a video.

Rip, lessons learned at least.

I've always just wanted to have lean muscular build, being that big doesn't seem practical

Ah body dysmorphia, damn:(

You now belong to FMT.
Thing is.... once these dudes stop the supplements they are mentally weaker . They Think that they can no longer lift what they did and it is sad. I go on and off creatine every so often and I used to get that feeling, but these guys are on a whole different level. They need mental help.

That dude did not look sleek:

I'm pretty into fitness and I have no idea (or can't sympathize with) why people would want to put these drugs in their body knowing the risks. I just really despise the use of steroids and even most supplements for athletic uses. Why cheat your way to "fake" gains?

This guy would show up on my YT recommends whenever I watched Hodgetwin vids. Shame that he was so shortsighted.

Of course he didn't look sleek in the off-season. But when he was contest ready, he managed to make his massive, mountain of muscle body look aesthetic - sleek if you will. That was precisely why that age of bodybuilding is still known as the Golden Age of bodybuilding. Because people didn't try to be the biggest there is, they had to combine that with aesthetic proportions, leading you to a result like this:

Yes but why defend their use in sports?

Because they are often used in sports as medicine. The issue is one of perception. Nobody balks when a guy takes a cortizone shot in order to not miss the big game, in fact they are often praised as tough and heroic, yet all that is is a drug that helps someone perform. A "performance enhancing drug" if you will. Yet those are probably worse for you than a lot of stuff that is demonized and banned. They are used in sports all the time, tons of medical enhancements are accepted in sports. It's a lot greyer than people like you want to believe.

I think Cortizone is a steroid. I might be wrong but I think it is. To further your point.

Damn, RIP Mr. Piano Man.

Used to watch some of his vids just for shear amusement. He was beastly and crazy looking.

That's what irrensponsible roiding for 20 years will do

Cortizone is an itch cream containing hydrocortisone, which itself the medical variation of cortisol, which is a steroid hormone. But I think Ninja Scooter is referring to Cortisone, which is similar cortisol, and helps with inflammation and joint pains.
