No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again information (3D Action, Shovel Knight confirmed)

Would genuinely be a lot more interested in a conventional sequel, so I'll wait and see on this one. If Suda's making the games he wants to though, good on him.

I can't wait for Travis to take down another 10-12 Assassins from the UAA for a third time.

Or I can have the same hack and slash fun in a unique game premise.

How do you post in a thread about new information without reading the first few words in the OP?

I think some people just have a bias towards indie games and haven't delved much into the scene to realize why the bias is silly (as basically at this point, hating 'indie games' for being indie games is basically just hating video games, the indie scene is way too broad at this point to be generalized well). So the people are just shit throwing to try to voice their disdain with it, but as the dislike is built on false and ignorant pillars, the arguments in turn are false and ignorant.

I personally think this will end up being plenty like No More Heroes, Travis already was big on otaku culture, gaming, and nerdy things so I think it makes a lot of sense if he was sucked into a game world he'd end up in a lot of popular indie games. The series and especially the first game had huge retro game charm, so a new No More Heroes with more direct indie game charm I think is exciting. People are worried about there being interesting bosses, but I actually think Hotline Miami and Shovel Knight as the two we have confirmed could have some amazing No More Heroes styled bosses, and I get the impression the indies agreeing to be in this are open to going crazy with their IPs in this.

I think there's a lot of potential in this idea, I think some people think indie games will hold back what they love about No More Heroes, but I disagree whole-heartily. If anything I think Suda and those on-board are interested to go all in on this and it might end up being the best NMH game since everyone on-board so far seems excited, inspired, and tackling it the way they want to tackle it.

No see, by saying 3D action they might be using the word "action" liberally as in to "perform an action", so we're probably just getting Travis doing Cooking Mama styled minigames in 3D where Travis has to stir the pot and heat up the grill with his beam katana.

This is the logical conclusion for sure.

Is this game even Indie? If it's a full fledged game like the others, it merely appeared on Nindies stream because there will be a lot of indie games referenced in it and is a Switch exclusive.

It's not indie since it's made by Grasshopper Manufactures and is apparently published by Marvelous. It just fits to presents an indie celebration in the Nindies showcase.

Well said, this is the long and short of it. When you argue from a position of willing ignorance and bias, your arguments are never going to come out particularly intelligent.

More great news. BTW... People that still in denial mode are just salty because the game is not coming to their platform and just want to troll...period.

It's not technically indie, but Suda wants Grasshopper to be an 'indie house', and seems instead of becoming a big game designer like a gaming Hollywood guy, he wants to stay in the indie world. To quote him from last January:

“Some game directors have even more influence than a Hollywood director,” Suda grins when I bring up the increasing recognition and fame developers now receive. “I feel like they’re kind of going to turn into Hollywood celebrities, as it were… but I don’t want to become a celebrity,” he laughs. “I want to stay in the indie world and do what’s best within there.”

Ah very nice to have confirmation! And Shovel Knight is a great choice, I can't wait to see what else there is. I wonder how Binding of Isaac might work...

This will probably work to get me to play all the indie games in it, so it's a great idea for all parties.

So the game still has 3D parts too? Well then i guess peoples concerns can be laid to rest.

I think it's pretty neat to use actual indie games in the game and i never played nmh but this collaboration interests me alot.

Cool that hotline miami and shovel knight are in.

Hyped, never got to finish Desperate Struggle but this sounds really good. Like the idea of going into indie games, just kinda hope he's bringing them into 3D and it's not just a "here play this level from this game" kinda thing.

I wonder if he's going for an open world like the 1st game or just straight forward like the 2nd. Kinda hoping more like the 1st, it was janky but enjoyable. Just had a certain charm to it.

I love the NMH series and Suda'a work, but Travis Strikes Again sounds like a celebration of indie games rather than a celebration of NMH, not interested.
I mean, if you're unwilling to give this a chance, being the first game in ten years with Suda in the director's chair...I don't think you are much or a fan.

Sounds like Kingdom Hearts. What a brilliant idea. Too bad I don't own a Switch, but I'll certainly watch it on youtube or something, can't wait to see the levels.

He's credited as Creative Director for Lollipop Chainsaw, is that false?

Not gonna lie, not only would I buy that game, but I'd probably love it too.

I've never played the original, but the indie game focus in this one has me making this a Day One purchase. They've made great selections so far too. Hotline Miami and Shovel Knight are two of my absolute favorite indies.

This feels like the Monster Hunter World announcement all over again. People give me headaches with their unnecessary mental gymnastics sometimes

How pathetic.

Just like how Inferno here is excited for this game having learnt that Shovel Knight and Hotline Miami are going to be part of it.

I am allowed to be dissatisfied of the idea that No More Heroes needs to cling onto separate popular intellectual properties to get its next game going, I don't see why that is so hard to understand.

Shovel Knight and Shantae were my two dream picks for this, but I already accepted that neither would probably be in since they're both so tonally different fron NMH.

But then this happens. Now with Shantae, I'm like

The official website has been opened:

http://tsanmh.com/

Not much to see there yet though except for the trailer.

Looking at this trailer it's different from the PAX one at Nintendo's channel. The audio mixing is a lot better, you can hear Travis' voice more clearly and some of his dialogue is different, notably more vulgar - maybe they had to tone down the dialogue for the sake of the showcase?

PAX Trailer:
"Now you're screwed, old man."
"Now you're just gonna confuse people, they need to know about the most hardcore assassin in video games!"
"Nice work, big man(?)"

Website Trailer:
"You really fucked up now, old man."
"Quit making this shit confusing. The players need to know about the most bad ass assassin in video games!"
"Son of a bitch! Nice work, dickhead."

Ugh all these little indie trash games! Why couldn't they have used AAA games??

-Zelda
-Uncharted
-Gears of War
-Resident Evil
-God of War
-Rabbids

They could've put him in these six AAA games instead of these no name killling the industry indie crap...

:)

Because it's not "clinging" to established indie properties to get going, it's utilizing them in a way that makes THIS game a legitimate entry into the NMH universe. This isn't a spinoff, don't know why you have to be so negative when everything stated about this game, should be everything you like. It's a 3D action game...

I need my Shantae in this game!

But keep the adorable Half-Genie herself away from Travis's reach.

Also: This. Is. A. Sequel. Be upset if you must but stop trying to change it.

Is it safe to say that Shovel Knight is basically the mascot for indie games at this point?

I still cant believe this single kickstarter game has gotten so big to the point where other games now base their premise on it.

Wait why doesn't Suda like NMH2!? That game was badass AF and from what I remember the gameplay was way more enjoyable and removed a lot of the jank from NMH1.

Maybe because there's no motorcycle driving in a hub world (I missed that in NMH2, at least)

NMH2 gave us Philistine, so it's okay in my book. Though considering Suda's opinion on Desperate Struggle, only the first game would get a hypothetical remaster in that situation

(Pls be better than the PS3 version in that case)

They're not putting him in any indie game. They're putting Travis into his game.

Ay yo, Yacht Club and Suda, make Travis a boss encounter in Shovel Knight.

Get an armor with Beam Shovel with moves from NMH and dark side mode

The idea of NMH2 not being canon anymore bothers me a lot more than it should. It seems so arbitrary.
NMH2 was already a little fast and loose with the continuity regarding the assassination's organization.

I'm all for Suda doing whatever he wants to do, and not be beholden to any of the fate of the characters from NMH2.

That would be a fantastic exclusive boss for the Nintendo versions of Shovel Knight.

I'm glad we're getting info this year on NHM. When Suda announced it at the Switch reveal, I assumed we wouldn't see anything on it until 2018.

NMH2 was kind of weird in how it deified Travis a little bit and gave him something resembling a happy ending despite the first game sort of going out of it's way to not give him the satisfaction. But what's kind of interesting is how both the No More Heroes 2 and Travis Strikes Back kind of have a similar introduction - a relative of a boss from the first game (Helter Skelter's brother in NMH2 and Bad Girl's dad in TSA) comes back to exact revenge on a Travis that's left Santa Destroy behind him. In one game, Travis goes on a roaring rampage of revenge that is heavy on the fan service and goes into a personal story about the fruitlessness of vengeance. In another, him and the villain get sucked into a literal game console and presumably have to play cat-and-mouse across a bunch of real games, presumably perverting a lot of games in the process that would usually be wholesome (Shovel Knight is pretty much a game kids can enjoy).

The latter seems like more of a concept that can follow up on NMH's satire on gaming - "No More Heroes" is a game that's exactly what it says on the tin, and Travis systematically tearing down worlds with established heroes is a promising concept. Maybe this is Suda's way of thinking what a proper sequel to No More Heroes should have been and something that he wasn't able to do in the past, not only because of him not being in the director's chair for it, but since developers and publishers back during those times were much more protective of their franchises, forcing him to opt for a more traditional sequel. Things have changed now though, especially after the indie boom which is the main basis of the game and most accurately reflects on Suda's mindset in development. But after NMH2's more character driven story it definitely feels a little odd that we might not be following up on it. That said I wonder if the game's setting means the previous game's canon nature can be a bit up for debate. Maybe
Travis and Sylvia both live in that trailer but she's simply not around when the events of the game happen.
