it will be tough for the GOP leadership to ignore their party leader. it makes already horrible optics look even worse. And you already know Trump is going to use his bully pulpit.

Trump is basically a chaotic neutral character. What motivates him is personal dignity and any sleights against it.

Stop shitting on my team. Start shitting on my finger.
Can someone explain to me why the GOP wanted an 18 month extension, the Dems 3 months and why Trump agreeing to 3 months thus benefits the Dems? I really don't quite understand it, given that the GOP has historically been against extensions. Is it so now the Dems get what they want (hurricane relief) and get the bargaining chip of "we'll shut down the government and blame Trump" back in December to get something else like the DREAM act on top?

Republicans want the extension over and done with until after the midterms and want to get back to their legislative goals. Now, Democrats are forcing republicans to have the debate again in 3 months, which will delay other legislation, and it'll give Democrats a lot of leverage since the Freedom Caucus in the GOP will never go along with a debt ceiling raise. I wouldn't be surprised to see Democrats force a vote on the DREAM act in December using that leverage, and it'll probably pass

18 months is after midterms. Dems want it closer to midterms but certainly before.

I wonder what McConnel and Ryan are furious about. They cannot deliver any votes.

And what happened to Trump's plan to shut down the government to get Congress in line and build his wall? He is really the best negotiator. Getting tired easily and then just agreeing to anything which looks like a deal.

I said this in PoliGAF, but if Democrats somehow won Congress in 2018 I could see them coaxing Trump into signing some progressive legislation pretty easily (before you know, impeaching him).

The thing is, I can see a scenario, however implausible where Trump just becomes a democrat (again) kinda. Nov 2018 approaches with Dems having a clear advantage... and he abandons the repub sinking ship.

If he senses the popular thing to do is sign a bunch of Dem legislation, then he signs. Playing both sides off against each other basically to maintain news coverage and 'popularity' with whomever will support him in the moment.

Plus it makes it harder for Dems to justify getting rid of him. Which if he's signing all their stuff, makes it a lot harder to do.

Still, he's just pissy at Ryan.

They couldn't get this moved past the midterm elections, which is what they wanted. They (and their party) are already facing a projected massive Blue wave because of Trump and galvanized voters. This will only further give ammunition to Democrats.

Nancy Pelosi might as well be Speaker. Ryan doesn't have the votes to raise the debt ceiling in December (well, likely April 2018 since the Treasury can stall a bit), and he likely doesn't have the votes for a spending bill this year. Which means that he has to come hat in hand to Pelosi and beg. Which means no Wall (which to be fair wasn't likely anyway) and some compromises in favor of democrats.

Meanwhile, imagine being a House GOPer right now. You voted for an unpopular healthcare bill that was never going to become law, now you might have to vote for the debt ceiling at least once. No Wall. And your leadership just might put DACA on the floor. A lot of republicans are going to face insane primary challengers next year.

See, what people fail to realize is that we have some REALLY FUCKING GOOD politicians...that limit themselves with ethics and morality. So when Republicans push them in the mud and drag them around, they fight back just enough to protect themselves but no further.
Now the GOP fucked up.
Now when the GOP goes for the legs to drag us in the mud we're going to put a foot on the back of their head and hold them under the mud until the bubbles stop.

So when some moron says "oh but Pelosi was a terrible Speaker because [unintelligible reasons]," we can look at this sort of thing. When someone says Chuck Schumer has never fought for anything in his life, we can show them -- no, every single one of these people can be just as scrappy as Republicans. But they believe we can do better than that. So they sit. And wait. Out of respect for order, they bite their tongues while Republicans fling bile everywhere.

No more.

But but but she made cringey jokes!

They wanted a long term exenstion to get past midterm elections, and then once they are set, they can try to use the debt ceiling to force widespread cuts to various programs they dont like but dont dare to outright defund in a normal budget.

Hence "DEBT CEILING EMERGENCY BUDGET CUTS" But out of the way of midterm elections because that would be really bad for midterm relelections and force many GOP members to vote against leadership.

Yea - if he fucks with Florida with this hurricane, he loses Florida in 2020.

He ain't THAT stupid.

Depending on how Irma plays out, they'll be expecting another 8 billion for relief in Florida too.

He isn't going to run in 2020 he's already counting down the days until he's done

Horseshit for the petty reason that Obama was President for two terms so Trump MUST be President for two terms. If he wins, then he'll start campaigning for Ivanka for 2024.
