Oh god. Just when I thought the most time-sink-y phase of tinkering wth the Mini SNES was over, Robin64 opened my eyes to the wonderful world of thumbnail creation.

Help, I'm addicted and it's 4:30 AM.

Wonder why this stock emulator is so choosy

Most likely because they only ever tinkered with it when something wouldn’t run right. Seems like they repurposed the WiiU VC SNES emulator, and it’s fitting that it would only minimally succeed at running the commercial successes that Nintendo intended to publish on the VC. This isn’t meant to be an all-purpose emulator, it makes no business sense. On the contrary, I’m actually surprised that so many games run.

I want to make absolutely sure I'm doing this right.

So I'm at Step 2 of Robin's guide: 2) Go to Kernel, Dump Kernel.

This message pops up:

Fi9m9v8.jpg

Does the kernal need to get dumped first BEFORE I hit "install driver"? The progress bar just sits there, so I'm wondering if it's supposed to move before or after I hit "install driver".

Also does the SNES have to be connected with the original USB cable, or will any USB cable do the trick?

Lastly, what format do the ROMs have to be in?

Star Ocean doesn't work because, like Street Fighter Alpha 2, it has a special on-board decompression chip that was only used in the two games, and allowed it to store an effectively larger-capacity game on a 32-meg cart, which was the max SNES/SFC cart size.

I would love to see that worked around somehow because, in spite of its problems (like the 3-second freeze at the start of each match while the sprite data decompresses), I have serious nostalgia for the SNES version of SFA2.

So a Jennifer based on a Jennifer player by a Jennifer. A triple Danza, if you will. :D

Nope, you need to install the driver in order to be able to dump the kernel in the first place. Installing the drivers is a prerequisite step, if you will. If you did the steps mentioned correctly (plugged SNES, held Reset, turned it on, the power light should NOT be on), just click install drivers and you're good to go.

Is that normal? Do I continue?

Had to go to another PC to avoid the error I was running into and I was able to transfer games just fine. But I noticed I missed a few so I went back and now the SNES doesn't turn on when plugged into the PC

Welcome to my life. My SNES is incredibly finicky now. It is better when I flash it back to the original kernel, but even then it doesn't always turn on (and stay on, resetting to use save points is a gamble) when I want it.

Kirby's Dream Course is so good, this is the first time I've really put some time into it. It's this bizarre, wonderful mix of platforming and mini golf.

Are the official hakchi beta releases adding much beyond the one robin posted today? I added ~20 games plus artwork and it’s all I plan to do. Just wondering if it’s worth changing over if I seemingly have all i want.

I know someone posted this already but I can't seem to find it. Anyone know what size I need to set the SFAM box art to so it matches the covers on my SFAM mini?

I can't wait to try this out and add even more games to my system when it appears it is more safe to do so. It seems like a decent amount of people are having issues.

Is there a place I should be looking for a step by step guide for how to do this?

Quick question and sorry if it's been asked before. I want Snes Classic but don't know if I should get one since I already have a hacked Wii U. I mostly play RPG games.

How does the Snes Classic compare with Wii U vc or Wii U Retroarch? Is it the same or better?

Man, I don't want to mess with this thing; I'm keeping my SNES mini as-is, and just gonna Virtual Console/Raspberry pi it for any supplemental games. I don't want to risk bricking it...

Is there any way to edit the image/thumbnails of the 21 pre-installed games? My menu is a mess.

b6141833d073fe2ca31ad5a45fc6f661.png

This is a little trickier. You need to FTP into the machine (hakchi has the info you need in the Tools menu) and browse to /usr/share/games/. There you will find the preinstalled CLV-P-xxxxx games. Download those to your PC. (Make sure to set your FTP client to transfer only 1 file at a time, the SNES Mini really hates more than that)

Now copy those folders to hackchi's /snes_games/ folders where your custom games are.

Now restart hakchi and you will see they appear as custom games too alongside previous ones you added, so you will want to deselect the original 21. Now you have copies that you can work with, such as changing their box art and thumbnails.

There you go... A bit of work but it works

Hacked without a hitch, got a good bunch of games working perfectly.

However, a few of the non-working ones share a common glitch where its screen is slightly off center and the sound has a delay. Any idea what the most common cause for this might be? Did I perhaps apply the wrong format or something?

Finished adjusting the size of the small thumbnails so everything fits nicely! I also replaced the standard boxart with some neat 3D versions. Really happy with it.

Only at 38 games. Need to add some more gems.

I think I've came up with my ideal game list once I get my SNES Mini in the mail.

I decided on list of exactly 50 games. The top 50 SNES games if you will. Now obviously this list mainly caters a lot to my tastes so some of the games here some folks may not agree with.

Including the default 21 games these are the remaining 29, I've decided upon.

01) ActRaiser
02) Axelay
03) Chrono Trigger
04) Demon's Crest
05) Donkey Kong Country 2 - Diddy's Kong Quest
06) E.V.O. Search for Eden
07) Final Fantasy IV
08) Gradius III
09) Harvest Moon
10) Illusion of Gaia (will probably use Retroarch to redirect to the default GUI if it can't be properly run natively through the built-in SNES Mini emulator)
11) Knights of the Round
12) Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
13) Mega Man X 2
14) Mega Man X 3
15) Mortal Kombat II
16) Pilotwings
17) R-Type III - The Third Lightning
18) Secret of Evemore
19) Seiken Densetsu III / Secret of Mana 2 (same thing applies as like Illusion of Gaia)
20) Shadowrun
21) Soul Blazer
22) Sunset Riders
23) TMNT IV - Turtles in Time
24) Terranigma (same thing applies as like Illusion of Gaia)
25) Tetris Attack
26) The King of Dragons
27) The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
28) The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse
29) Top Gear 2

Now I'm undecided if I should remove Kirby's Dream Course from the list. I've played the game before, the odd mix of Golf and Billiards is interesting but the game in itself is not something I'd particularly care for in a top 50 list to be honest, so if anyone has a suggestion / recommendation to replace it on my list for the 30th game, I'm open to their opinion.

I've also modified some of the default included games for the sake of fixes and translations. (i.e replace FFIII with FFVI, use the Secret of Mana VWF version instead of the one included, use the uncensor / restoration patches for Contra III, Castlevania IV, etc)

Now seeing as there is a maximum list of games before their is some run off with the thumbnails on the side of the screen, I wonder with Robin64's alternative icons would allow me to avoid this issue.

Other than that I'm pretty much ready when I get my SNES Classic. I got my SN30 8Bitdo controller, and the wireless receiver.

The only thing left for me to do is get some decent box art for the Japanese to English translation stuff and more American style box art for some of the European and Japan only games.

God bless Hakchi. It's doing everything I want it to now. I'm making sure to find the proper release dates and formatting and cleaning the hell out of the boxart to make sure it's in line with the official art. This little emulator box is going to be a curated box of phenomenal SNES/SFC games. Just gotta fix the size of the SFC games.

On the subject of release dates. This might be a controversial point for some folks.

When it comes to Japanese games that were never given a proper localization into English for the West, would you think it would be fair to use the "release date" for fan translated game such as Seiken Densetsu III using the day the English translation came out as opposed to the release date of the Japanese release?

I mean in the sense of using the "English" release date in an unofficial capacity for the sake of consistency as opposed to using the original release date, such as in the case when Japanese and English official releases of games also having different release dates.

Missing some classics like Earthworm Jim, NBA JAM, Zombies ate my neighbors and even replacing SF II Turbo with Super Street Fighter II. But great list. Mine will be similar. I might push for Alpha or MK3 for more fighters once emulation nailed down.
