Thor: Ragnarok Early Reactions

I'll just wait for the real reviews that agree with my pessimism instead of the Marvel shills cashing that Disney check.

Did anyone find Dr Strange enjoyable? Thing was a forgettable slog with a couple of redeeming sequences.

Early impressions of comic book movies don't have the best track record, but it's Taika so I'm fairly confident Thor 3 will deliver.

Dr. Strange was almost Thor 2: The Dark Meme levels of forgettable.

For all the talk of how it was the first Marvel movie really dealing with "magic and mysticism" and how it was "going to get crazy," it was an extremely by-the-numbers movie that boiled "magic" down to fractalized-scenery and a couple trite, repeated special effects.

There was really nothing in that movie approaching "high concept."

From the impressions wow..it seems to be embracing more of a comedic theme. Did it go with guardians of the galaxy route?

Kind of expected it to be a fun film. Still a little disappointed that this film doesn't seem to have much weight to it. Especially since Ragnarok isn't treated like a joke in the comics. But at least it'll be entertaining.

No, it was a tepid bore with by the numbers direction of an uninspiring screenplay that was a complete waste of the character and of my time. One of the worst MCU films next to Thor 2 and the Incredible Hulk. It had absolutely nothing to say.

I mean, not everyone is going to like every movie that ends up having an overall great reaction from critics/audiences. There are plenty of well-reviewed movies I didn't enjoy.

(Doctor Strange is pretty awesome though. Not without its flaws, of course.)

Man haha. Yeah there wasn't any drama worth writing home about, the character arc was pretty predicatable, but I figured enough people had fun with some of the creativity and humor that it wouldn't be a slog.

Didn't expect it to end up in the same bin as Thor the dark world. Though that's probably on me and my sense of tastes (probably in the minority). I don't seek out Thor 2 but I at least got a few laughs out of it and didn't feel like it was a total waste of time. Reviews make be believe it will be better than that at least, and that's good enough for a couple hours in a theater for me.

Maybe my expectations have just lowered with the never-ending death march that is transformers and fast and the furious.

Yea, Dr. Strange was pretty lame. Literally the one and only time I understood the complaints of Marvel being like a factory when it comes to making their comic book movies. Looked pretty tho

Cannot wait to see this, just a few more weeks D:

Considering how Dr Strange turned out and what I thought of it, I'm not sure critical acclaim for a MCU film means anything to me anymore. Tasty kool aid though,

I'm optimistic about Thor Ragnarok, but I don't really care what critics or fans have to say about it until I see it myself.
Definitely agree with you here. I don't automatically dislike Marvel movies but I'm skeptical about fan and critical impressions given how often they've done little for me. But I'll be there day 1 cause it's had good trailers and Taika.

Why post in a critic reaction thread then?

The main problem for me is a lot of Marvel MCU movies post Avengers are great on a first watch and really show their flaws on a second watch.

The first Avengers and Winter Soldier for me are infinitely rewatchable. Other MCU movies not so much.

This is a Dr. Strange thread now? lol

Can't wait for Thor3 and have enjoyed most MCU films but Strange was very underwhelming. For starters Strange wasn't very likeable. Guy was a straight up asshole for at least 25% of the movie. It just went through the motions and I had little attachment to any of the characters except his ex gf. I can't even remember her name.

Can't believe how excited I am for a Thor movie. Will watch this with my girlfriend on the same weekend we're going to see the 20th Pokémon movie in theaters. Should be a pretty good weekend. :p

Doctor strange was awsome. you guys are boring.

Finally someone with some sense in this thread. Doctor Strange doesn't deserve all this hate.

Dr Strange is so forgettable and mediocre that it doesn't even deserve an emotion like hate. Just indifference. Fans of that movie just want to exaggerate so they can carry around a persecution complex.

Over the last few days, I just got done watching Iron Man, Hulk and Iron Man 2 and about to move onto Thor. (yeah, watching all the MCU movies in order for the first time >.> - I enjoyed all 3 so far though)

Guess I'll get around to this whenever it releases for rent on digital platforms or something lol. Glad it seems to be positive reception though.

Dr. Strange had one of my favorite endings/solutions to defeating the bad guy in a comic book film in awhile. It toyed with the typical comic book third act climax of a city skybeam battle but then subverted it.

I loved the ending/obligatory boss fight of Dr. Strange. It really set itself apparent and was just fun to watch.

Anywho, people are going to REALLY complain about quips and no steaks in Ragnorak, aren't they? The no fun crowd always demolish these types of superhero/fantasy/sci fi films. God forbid a comedy ALSO be a genre film.

You obviously have to take all these early reactions with a grain of salt, but this is Taika Waiti we're talking about. Would it it really be that big a surprise if he ended up making a great movie.

Edit: Oh so this isn't just random fan reactions. Even better!!

Doctor Strange was great. That end fight was one of the best MCU moments thus far I would say. The only thing I didn't like was how his training was so rushed in terms of onscreen time.

As for these Thor Ragnarok reactions I expected nothing less. Waititi is a god and Marvel Studios are on some insanely crazy streak. This was never going to end badly.
