When has apologizing ever accomplished anything? It would have helped had Colin just apologized and owned up to his stupid joke.
When it comes to the extreme right-wing I think most people figure out pretty quickly what they are dealing with. They are reasonably open about their views and not afraid to share them.
I don't think that smearing people who are normal as Nazis etc really helps the far-right as most people when encountering legitimate extreme right stuff are going to say "nah, I'm out". It makes the left look horrible but I do not think it helps the far-right.
They don't care that their actions may or may not inadvertently help ultra right-wing types because they honestly know that it won't.
"Centrists" are not a gateway to the far-right. Centrists are not "normalizing" far-right views.
These cunts already know that.
The biggest problem with centrists and people who are apolitical is that they are a threat to the extreme far-left.
This is because they allow people to see that there is a different and not extreme path.
Consider the reality of Colin's joke that started all this shit off. The effect of such a joke is just to say "ok guys we don't need to take this stuff SO seriously".
THAT is where the threat is. There is potential limiting of the power of the far left if people are allowed to say "meh, I am not taking this seriously".
Look at a place like ResetEra. They have an irrational hatred of anyone that doesn't toe the line. Why?
The easy answer is because it affects their ability to control people and exert power.
They CAN'T allow you to laugh and joke about things. Not because it could make people go far-right but because it would mean people realize "oh yeah, i don't actually have to care this much about all that stuff".
Dudes like Colin Moriarty show that you can say "it's not a big deal if the new Star Wars game has a white protagonist, I'm just going to enjoy the game" and then just go about your day. They do not want that.
They want an activist crowd, that thinks everything is super serious, so that when the call goes out they can rally the troops to put pressure on Developer X and Content Creator Y and Convention Organizer Z. It's why they hate AVGN and Videogame Dunky and Red Letter Media so on. Those dudes are too laid back and if you see them being laid back then you might think it's ok to be laid back too.
Their worst nightmare is a gaming community that says "I just want to enjoy games".
What a post. Well said. When it comes to the extreme right-wing I think most people figure out pretty quickly what they are dealing with. They are reasonably open about their views and not afraid to share them.

What is there to own up to?
When has apologizing ever accomplished anything?
No reason to apologize as nothing was wrong with the joke. If you (royal you) were offended by it or thought he deserved to apologize because of it, I would suggest you seek help.
For making a silly joke that offended people.
Many times it's helped. Lets not get extreme like many on the internet and act like apologizing has never helped.
If he cared more about staying in business with his friends, then he would have apologized. But if his pride meant more to him than that, then so be it. No need to apologize and he didn't care about those business relationships, plus his actual friendship.
At the very least we all should be able to admit it was an unnecessary joke that he knew would ruffle some feathers.

So claiming that apologies don't work much of the time is an "extreme" position? Such a preemptive poisoning the well there...Many times it's helped. Lets not get extreme like many on the internet and act like apologizing has never helped.

He made a peace and quiet joke when his girlfriend was out for the day.
None of the women in his life were offended, but the internet took upon themselves to get offended on their behalf.
Can someone give me a brief summary so I don’t have to dig through 8 pages?
Why? He didn't hurt anyoneIt would have helped had Colin just apologized and owned up to his stupid joke.

If I were in his shoes, I would post this on Twitter , on the day his panel would have taken place.Haven't followed this thread. So this tweet was interpreted as offensive and that's why PAX ditched him?
Am I reading this right? A tweet 2.5 years ago?
Ah. Peace and quiet. #ADayAwayFromPAX

Unfortunately yeah. I haven’t really followed Colin but he’s gained a new fan in me for his refusal to apologize and calling PAX out on their bullshit.Haven't followed this thread. So this tweet was interpreted as offensive and that's why PAX ditched him?

Do you have examples of him being a moderate? No. People don't like him because essentially he doesn't tow the far left line that the majority of the video game and tech industry does.
And of course to the crazies, that makes him evil, because they lack the intellectual capacity for nuance and/or need to appear woke on social media so they have to attack him for woke points from the rest of the insane industry.
His political stances are lukewarm at best, quite moderate, but that isn't good enough so people attack him. He's been attacked for no reason whatsoever.
No this tweet is why he was forced to leave Kinda Funny.Haven't followed this thread. So this tweet was interpreted as offensive and that's why PAX ditched him?

Just curious as I know who he is, but I don't follow him. I just remember him from doing game developer interviews here and there, and there is nothing political about them.
Interesting. He's for the legalization of drugs(often a left stance) he's pro choice(left stance), pro gay marriage(left stance), but he believes we should have stricter border security and it should be more difficult to become a US citizen(while also condemning the nasty things that have been going on at the border) and people in the industry will call him a Nazi for saying that.
One of his stances is also one that Jordan Peterson talks about a lot and that is the gender wage gap isn't what people think it is, and he gets killed for that and called a sexist.
He also takes issue with the white privilege stuff and argued once that Asian Americans do very well for themselves in America, and that makes him a racist to these people.
Nothing really extreme there. He doesn't have any "alt-right" beliefs at all. But he's painted in a negative light by crazy people.
Interesting.
I guess if I was a game industry person, I'd get even less chance of going to PAX.
I agree with all what Colin said with exception of drugs which I think should be illegal..... even weed.
Things like casinos, weed shops, horse racing tracks etc.... are great for city coffers and tourists dicking around for fun, but they are a drain on the actual surrounding neighbourhoods.

It's Kinda Funny he's doing better now than 2.5 years ago.No this tweet is why he was forced to leave Kinda Funny.
I don't really care about this whole situation, I mean, it's not ok, but at the same time it's just a dumb convention. However, this point of yours is ridiculous, someone, SOMEWHERE will take offense to something. If you live your life like that, you poor thing.
If someone gets offended by a silly joke that was done in good faith, then, well, sucks for them. No need to bend over for every chicken little and joyless person in this planet.
Bruh, come on!
It's not his problem that people were offended. People can be offended about anything, it's not the responsibility of others to not offend people.
He did absolutely nothing wrong and there was no reason to apologize. He made a joke. If people were upset by it, that's their problem, not his.
Pretty weird that you're coming down on the person who did nothing wrong more than the people who put him in a position where he would have to choose between casually expressing himself and his job/friends. It's like you're flacking for them but they're undeniably in the wrong.
Also, I'm not sure if there's ever been a "necessary" joke in all of human existence and that certainly shouldn't be any standard someone has to hit for comedic expression. Extremely tame comedic expression; to the point where even you as someone who is criticizing him has to use the mildest derogatory language imaginable like "silly" or "unnecessary."
Even if you disagree with him his arguments are always backed up with reasoning.

You've posted some pretty wild shit on this board, but this one takes the cake.
Why on earth would you apologise for something when:
A. The only people that were "upset" are the people who already hate you
B. You don't personally believe you did a thing wrong so the apology is completely fake
C. You're well aware that it's not going to make a difference to the idiots that are harassing you in the first place
Are you really that spineless that you'd just issue fake apologies left and right to keep everybody happy? Fuck that. It's like when Brandon Jones came on Colin's Last Stand, I like Brandon, but he legitimately said "an apology can never hurt". Yeah, it absolutely can when you don't mean it. It massively damages credibility and makes you look like a weasel. It's a dangerous life to live when Twitter of all things dictates what you say and how you say it.
Context? Do you seriously need every Tweet to read THIS IS A JOKE before the main content? You'd have to have some serious brain damage to think what he Tweeted wasn't a completely harmless throwaway dad joke.
The people who took Moriarty to the cleaners weren't actually offended by anything, they just hate him for his politics and were looking for any excuse to get rid of him. The women who claimed to be offended by the joke are the exact sort of women that go on tirades against men on a daily basis. The men getting offended on behalf of women didn't give two shits about the plethora of women that came out and said "guys it's obviously a joke stop getting so upset". They don't care, they just want him cancelled.
You missed my point. I don't think he "HAS" to apologize at all. My point was "IF" he wanted to stay in business with his friends, then the best thing to do would be to apologize. He made the choice to stay true to himself, so the fallout from that ended up happening. And then he kept pushing his narrative (which is 100% okay), but it seems to be costing him gigs. This is all his choice and if he's okay with it, then cool. Again I want his libertarian views in my gaming world, but I wish it was balanced with some of the people on Kinda Funny because it would cause great conversation.
And it's not spineless to apologize for saying something that was seen as ill-timed and in bad taste. Stop being a hyper-sensitive internet dude that treats everything like it's the end of the world.
Stop being a hyper-sensitive internet dude that treats everything like it's the end of the world.
How many women does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
One. She holds it in place, while the world revolves around her.
Never apologize to SJW's. In fact, do the opposite. It would have helped had Colin just apologized and owned up to his stupid joke.
What you did there, I see itIt's Kinda Funny he's doing better now than 2.5 years ago.
He didn't have to bend over and apologize. But he's not entitled to stay in business with people that would have liked him to be the bigger person and own up to what he said. It cost nothing financially to say "I apologize for the joke I made on Twitter and I didn't mean any harm by it". Well maybe just a tiny bit of pride, but that's it.
I'm serious. People act like apologizing is the end of the world. I hate that Colin is get banned left and right from things games related. I loved his take on games, even though I hate his politics. I miss that dude, but it is what it is.
And his friends did nothing wrong for getting out of the Colin Moriarty business. Clearly if he's the type of person that wants to fight tooth and nail to defend a joke that many didn't like then so be it. Plus the stuff he started saying afterward was worse to me personally. The way he started to play the victim was odd, all things considered.
You are taking the side that he did nothing wrong. I disagree with that. We disagree with each other. I do think his joke was stupid personally. I don't think he's a terrible person for saying the joke though. A quick apology would have washed things over. In 3 days Twitter would have forgot all about the stupid joke and it wouldn't have mattered. It was Colin push back that made things worse in my opinion. And to this day I'm still not 100% sure it was a "Joke" to be honest with you.
And for reference, my favorite 3 comedians of all time are Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappell, and Chris Rock. All 3 of them have said some of the most offensive jokes in history and I laughed and loved it. Context matters. Colin never gave us the context of his Tweet, where the majority of the Kinda Funny fans understood immediately that it was a "joke" (mainly due to his politics).
Hence why they hate him.
I think people consider him alt-right more due to the fact that he's been on more right-wing shows like Joe Rogan (even though I don't consider him right-wing at all, but okay). After the joke he made, he was under the spotlight and vilified ever since.
