Death Stranding Review Thread

After playing for about 3 hrs, it isn't that bad when you get the hang of the mechanics, and the game does a good job spoiling you with nice looking graphics and atmospheric environments while you walk from point a to b, and the story is interesting, but i just wish there was more action. I will eat some of my words when i was being harsh on the game, but some things still stand, especially the pace.
You'll get action from around chapter 3 onwards.... it's building you up.

Another game that kind of makes me doubt the credibility of professional video game reviewers and has me concerned about their influence over sales of more niche games such as this.

I'd love to see many, many, more games like Death Stranding on the market.

Unfortunately, I feel like this kind of "progress" within the gaming industry is hindered by people who have very very specific ideas of what a "videogame" can be or even ought to be.

After 3 full days with this game I even struggle to understand how people can make the case that it isn't "fun". There is plenty of fun to be had here.

More concerning is just the lack of real deep and thoughtful reflection on what Kojima was aiming for here.
Personally, I think this game and Sekiro are pretty much even as far as game of the year is concerned.

However, both of my game of the year contenders are "not fun" it seems.

It's fucking bullshit. I think the medium has evolved so much since the 1980s that we probably really need to ask if "game" is the correct description for some of these things anymore. If we are still cool with "game" as a descriptor then at least we need to stop holding videogames to the rigid dictionary definition of "game".

This thing is a total revelation as far as I am concerned.
The level of immersion, the stunning set-pieces, the world building, the story telling, the perfect drip feeding of information to the player, the constantly expanding possibilities as you put more and more hours into the game.

I feel like a lot of reviewers take the approach of "here is what I think a game should be and here is all the ways that this one isn't doing what I want".
Instead of looking at what is actually going on here they are looking for something else.

Don't get me wrong. I can see where the game is not insane fun like Castle Crashers (for example) or Spider-Man BUUUUUUT this one was never trying to be like that.

It's SUPPOSED to be a more thoughtful and measured experience and it's just so disappointing to see reviewers miss the point completely and then have people pounce on the one or two shitty reviews to create an impression that the game is not worth buying or playing.

It's kind of shocking that some of these people actually get paid to do this for a living.

Death Stranding is the "pinnacle" of video game. It is beyond a masterpiece. the game is incredible. Every step i take in this game feels like im part of the journey. The movement and the animations are on point. There is so many things you can do in this game. Kojima and his team put their souls into this game. like you I love Sekiro and Death Stranding, two of the most unique and incredible games i have ever played in my life.

Gaming journalists are not part of the gaming community, and they will never be in my opinion, thats is why i never bother with their opinions. We gamers should decide for ourself if we like a game or not instead of relying on complete strangers to decide for us

Video games have always been an "Evolving Medium", the Artist is the one in charge of delivery is vision however he wants.

Been playing since Friday and man, that game is like "crack!" addictive and fun!

I am glad i am alive right now...witnessing and playing that master piece! Kojima is a blessing to the gaming community. A gift.

I’d really love to know

I didn't like i t. But i bought the collector's aswell. I'm a fan of Kojima and i'm giving my support no matter what. I've also platinumed it because of Kojima. Usually i don't spend time with a game i don't enjoy.

Not liking a game, doesn't mean that the game is bad (at least not always).

Well said.

Now take it even further. What is a videogame. The bare fundamentals are moving pixels around the screen and pressing buttons. Each game just displays different pixels at different times and limits button presses to trigger different reaponses. When you really start delving into a video game you start to ignore what's it's displaying onto he screen and begin to feel it. You take out all the bells and whistles and start to figure out what's at the crux of it all. Am I getting enough button presses and pixel changes.

repititive and dull gameplay. I really dont get that. im stil in chapter 2 and there is already SO MUCH TO DO, so much gameplay, and then I hear things even pick up more in chapter 3 and you get more weapons, vehicles etc. The game has some awesome game mechanics. And yet even those good scores get the same comments that most of the people in the OT cant relate to in anyway

its really weird

Yeah im also still in chapter two and really enjoying myself! I opted to do all sidequests before going into chapter 3 and just last night did a big haul of communitydeliverys. boosted me from bridge rank 0 to rank 22. it was an imense satisfying feeling. i can really see how you can addicted to this gameplayloop and why the MULES are kinda believable. ;D

Thanks for this, nicely put. Some reviews have been quite shallow and did not even try to play by the game rules and welcome its approach: more trying to sound smart and edgy than doing a proper review of the game and then perhaps still not liking it. You can dislike something without it being trash and worthless.

People scream for innovation and experimentation and for high production values then are like Piranhas with game experiences that go in that direction. I find some press hypocritical around this theme. Not the first instance either.

Of course, this being a platform exclusive generates some additional nasty trolling as some people are hell bent to put down anything the “enemy“ does or to try to trigger/anger the fans in the other camp as a good thing to do in and of itself. Had it been a day one GamePass exclusive or multiplatform (see what happened after NMS arrived on Xbox too... mysteriously a lot of the gratuitous hate died down...) would have seen a number of posters here singing a much much different tune.

I got bored of this afte about 15 hours. I really tried my best but I can't put up with a game that is the worst aspect of open world bloat in distilled form - literally, walking across huge boring plains is the gameplay here, and it goes on for apparently upwards of 70+ hours. I just can't. I thought the gameplay would be diferent. I would still give it a 9/10 for trying something new and Kojima knows what he doing.

Fair enough, I have to give him the ability to take that trope and actually simulate landscape traversa instead of that just happening as part of the open world experience. Gamifying that is quite an amazing achievement for me and thus slower contemplative gameplay pace is just what I would have liked... from what I read in other threads and/or comments there is also so much more to do than traverse and do deliveries (sneaking in other camps, stealing weapons and supplies, minor fights against these groups, etc... very addictive).

I personally love walking around areas such as the ones depicted in the game for hours and hours so I guess there is that too :).

I have noticed something in the game.

When you use the same path some times it start to change the ground to a flat without stone path so it changes dinamically while you play over and over... it seems the online players affect it too because I can find paths for easy travel from one day to another.

It really cool that attention to details.

Ohhhh if you use some havine to hide stealthy if you back after the havine where you hide is gone.

There are so much things in this game that reviewers didn't talk that I'm starting to think what game they played? lol

It opens up with more options, definitely not 70 hours of walking but there is a lot.

I deleted Death Stranding from my wishlist a long time ago, but for some reason (Marketing i think), i buyed the game anyway.
I wanted to play the "expirience".
Im enjoying the game, its somehow relaxing....i dont know how to listen some music while traveling.
Theres one thing that i cant stand right now.....and its the story and the cliché metaphorical shit that is around the game......damn Kojjima is so good in some aspect but at the same time its a total disaster in others.

Every build that reaches lvl3 can have custom sound tracks... so if you get near them you will listem to these sound tracks.
You can of course put your own custom sound tracks on your builds.
If you are far ways from the range of a build you will listem to the game sound track.

You can of course listem all sound tracks in the Music Player inside your private room.

I feel the same. It’s disappointing because it could be something truly special if it respected the player’s ability to piece things together.

Totally agree, Its an overcomplicated plot, with horrible clichés, long cutscenes because of reasons.

The bare fundamentals are moving pixels around the screen and pressing buttons.

Games are, in my opinion, a 'craft', not an art. The artistry is in the perfection of how a character controls and the visceral sensation of moving and playing that character. There has to be a sense of feedback.

I do agree with the general principle that story in a videogame serves the same purpose as in a porn film. It is trite filler that simply acts to frame the more grisly business at hand. I have never once felt a molecule of empathy for a videogame character. I skip every attempt at narrative. In contrast, I have great *joy* in controlling a character like Mario. He is a nonsense symbol that travels through tubes and eat mushrooms. It is absurd. But that's the magic - it doesn't even attempt to frame the video game as a story.

The great trick that Kojima has played here is to convince people that somehow telling a story is a more noble aspiration than making a great game. It's not. Moreover, his stories are uniformly incoherent garbage. So he's made a bad game and told a bad story.

Reviewers fall for this sort of stuff, because they are desperate to elevate their medium to an art. When they should taken confidence in the fact it's a craft.

It is not related to your level.

Like I said you have a Music Player where you can play all the sound track anytime.
And you can put any sound track to play in any build you created after upgrade it to lvl3... so if you are near that build it will play the soundtrack you choose.

There is no art in Death Stranding... it is pure gameplay.
Maybe the most gameplay focused game Kojima ever did.

The game is a 10 ! and its addictive. I am on chapter 2 or 3 when you take the boat to port knot city...and im rank 95, I love this game. plan to become the best "porter" ever :messenger_beaming:

Decided to get it, I was getting it for my brothers xmas present, and since I wanted to try it, might as well.

So, something truly unexpected happened, I got the game about 2 days ago...and played 16 hours already, I basically did nothing these past 2 days and just played it, I havent got hooked on a game since TLOU, so yeah, pretty big deal for me.

This is a game that you need to feel and play, watching videos makes no sense, because the fun is the actual walking and how the character moves and behaves with its weight and so on.

Having said this, I dont agree the game is a walking simulator, although a big chunk is walking, almost all the runs I did I had to either fight off MULEs or BTs, and again, the walking is pretty fun, the landscapes are stunning, and the game is pretty tense most of the times, when its not, you feel relaxed, and you can breathe and look at the landscape.

Somehow I feel the game is pretty similar to Metal Gear Solid 1, I know this doesnt make sense at all, idk if its the passing or anything, but I find it similar somehow (I hated MGS5).

So overall, I think everyone should try it, its certanly not for everyone, its a slow passed game, but that loneliness adds to the story, and just makes every encounter even more tense.

Storywise, Kojima is Kojima, so theres a ton of information, too much at times, but im liking it so far, im in chapter 4 I think.

In the reviews I saw alot of them compaining about lackluster boss batles. But the boss batles in god of war where also pretty lackluster. some just look great cozz of the big bosses but the gameplay in them is also mostly the same. there was only 1 boss batle that was truly awesome and u all know wich one.

but I just encounterd my first boss battle here.. Dam so unique! Great scenery in that boss battle, the whole set up to it was freaking amazing. The gameplay to beat it was great I thought. really not boring?

men they did so much in 3.5 years while building a studio only to get shit on lol. almost nobody appreciated the boss battles.

You can safely read that as the boss battles not being difficult enough. It's 2019 and some gamers still want games only they can play so they can feel superior to everyone else.

Quick and probably dumb question

What’s the “Death” for in the title?
That makes it sound like some hybrid DOOM type game

Why not call it Stranding” ?

Because death is a central theme in the game. The game world's apocalypse (and the lore behind it) revolves around it.

Don't know, probably for the same reason it's called The Last of Us. They weren't the Last of Them, so why not call it Us?

I don't think that will be spoiler because it was told already in the Prologue.
But Death Stranding is what they call the cataclysmic events that happens in the world and destroyed most of the humanity... the Prologue is basically you taking part in one of these Death Stranding events.
It is the Death Stranding events that caused the rain and BT's (these invisible enemies).

That is basically the Prologue.

Games are not art lol

High Art? No. But Pop Art, absolutely.

If a form that combines visual arts, audio design and music, writing, cinematography, and performance/dramaturgy is not potentially "Art", then nothing is.

In a nutshell if games are not art then the problem is your definition of "Art", typically in my opinion this is a sort of reverse snobbery where the worst, most elitist and cloistered aspects of "High" art are uses as a brush to tar any creative endeavour with aspirations to do more than entertain or distract.

While games contain some art elements like graphic, music, and story... they are not art.
They are interactive entertainment product.
You have objectives, rules, rewards, you can win and lose.
That is not art.

I love open world games but this game really is the worst AAA single player open world game by far, the size of this world is as big as kojima’s bloated ego.

Just FYI Dragons Dogma did all that "dynamic gameplay" years ago.

I love Dragon's Dogma, but I have no idea what you're even saying with this about "dynamic gameplay."

I hate it. I put 10 hours into it between yesterday and today, and I have to give up because despite finding the story pretty interesting albeit convoluted as expected, I find the gameplay to be so boring that I just couldn't force myself to keep playing. I tried really hard to like it but I just can't stand the gameplay. Probably the most disappointing game I've played in a long, long time.

There is no easy answer at all... game is love or hate.

I went from not buying the game to buy due the reviewers.
And I ended loving it to the point to be one of the best games I ever played (and the best Kojima game ever did).

I have about 30 hours but I can't talk too much about story because I'm at Episode 2 yet... I keep just playing it without doing the main story missions.

So in gameplay alone it is diversity, complex and good enough to hold me having fun for 30 hours already.
And I miss a lot every time I'm not playing it.

I want to watch some reviewers to see what these reviewers did because seems like they played a completely different game but I fear spoilers.

PS. Most of the constructions and vehicles are not opened to me yet (I have only a old motorcycle to travel)... I set some goals so I did one story mission today at launch time... and I will try to move the story until the main events posts Episode 3 at least.... so I'm forcing me to not do side delivering missions that is what I like to do in the game due the gameplay mechanics.

10 hours in is basically still the tutorial section, and half of that is like cutscenes and dialogue.

Compared to the average AAA game, you're either half way done if it's like an Uncharted or like 15 missions into a UBI open world.

No real point here but it's not surprising to see people tapping out early.
