They're basically using the name value of an old franchise. But it's 20 years old now and the game will bear no resemblance to the originals.
Exactly. That's why it won't creatively limit them in their endeavor in any way shape or form.

1,3 Million is not considered a HUGE IP son.
Spying?because its a lousy premise for a game. and im not interested in the subject matter.
To be more specific Darrell Gallagher pitched Perfect Dark to Phil, made a new studio(with Datadyne logo) and hired people to make a Perfect Dark game.OP so blinded by his stupid anger he forgot that The Initiative were allowed to pick the project they wanted to work on. They just happened to want to work on the Perfect Dark IP.
Essentially, OP is asking for censorship through peer pressure and shaming tactics. Lel.
You endured the One but you are jumping when they have id and Ninja Theory? That’s some approach.
Spying?
The last Perfect dark was 15yrs ago. This will be like a new I.P when it is released.
Besides, if the game is good, no one will care.
Forcing, yeah
The team wants to do that.
Whatever. But I get the feeling that they could have announced the same thing but had said that it was a new I.P and everyone complaining would have been elated..you also need to be interested in the subject matter, i hear Animal Crossing is the fucking shit, but im not touching that.

What about a male lead?a woman spy game? nah thanks, would have been disappointed all the same.
"What they did with Sakaguchi" 13 years (Lost Odyssey) and 14 years ago (Blue Dragon). Do you still live in the 2010s or something? Sakaguchi has been slacking off with mobile games that keep failing and deliver nothing, even if you look at them as if they were indie games. Nothing stops Xbox from giving him a good budget and making an actually good game, not another Game Pass flop. Judging by your hate towards FF XIII, seems like you do live in 2010. Those beautiful-beautiful times when games were aimed only at people with a mentality of white middle-aged straight men who look up to Duke Nukem, have a cutie pie trophie wife and a fridge full of beer. Look up the cover arts for the vast majority of popular games of that time, also at games of PS2 gen when we finally started getting good 3D graphics. If you don't see a pattern there, I don't know what else to tell you. The games that were aimed at the Western audience were revolving around "white middle-aged straight male" audience, it's a fact. The only female protagonists that might have gotten a game would need to be sexualized to not offend all the "strong men" of video games. And there comes FF XIII - a game made by Japanese, people who were making good female characters as far back as the SNES days... a game you were expecting to cater to you and no one else but it didn't. How heartbreaking it might have been that you still remember itYou just said you don't believe 'Microsoft' (really you mean the devs under Microsoft) can make anything new and good, but suggested them to do what they already did with Sakaguchi; which was make something new and good (Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon). Unfortunately, most people who share that sentiment either did not buy it on 360 or are simply Sony fanboys pretending to have bought it when in reality, they were too busy hyping the colossal disappointment that was Final Fantasy 13.
Either way, we're not getting another Sakaguchi epic.
You can still pretend like it's "that special something that's missing from Microsoft's line up" though.
Oh you mean the Chinese copy that looks, feels, plays better and scored higher than everyones favorite Fallout game that Obsidian developed (New Vegas)?
(Which was a multiplat, by the way..)
This place is full of frauds, I swear...
What about a male lead?
Conversation over.at least the xbox one had Titanfall.
Conversation over.
Do you have proof they were 'forced' to make Perfect Dark? Do you know that the game won't be good? Why not wait for it to come out to attack it?
amazing game, played it 2 years straight, loved the combination of single player and MP combined. Infact the MP is superior to titanfall 2.
You shouldn’t complain about them using this franchise, then. Neither of you. The basically have a name and a new canvas since it won’t replicate the N64 or 360 gameplay. It’s a win win situation for both who want fresh air in the XB ecosystem (lol fresh air, another shooter, I know) and the devs who want to appeal to an existing fan base.Yeah I dont get why it has to be this franchise. Lets face it, most people have never played the original. Its too old and somewhat too niche (back in the day console fps's were niche) for that. Also the N64 install base was never huge, so even without these factors not a lot of people could have played it.
Sure it was somewhat innovative at the time, again, since fps's were kinda new on consoles. But it was also almost unplayable without the extra RAM pack (which made it even more niche) and it hasnt aged well.
Just a weird choice

Why do all these idiots actually think we care about their borefest?Cope. You don't have a choice. Maybe Sony will make you a Days Gone 2 if you'll be a good boy.
For a game made with limited AA budget and small time frame it was decent. Microsoft acquired a lot talented devs who never had the proper budget and resources they needed(compare Hellblade II trailer with original Hellblade).Until then, keep playing The Outer Worlds, a game that's stuck in 2010s, very much like you are.
It is the highest rated fps(alongside Halo CE)
I'm looking forward to seing this game, but damn.
The Hellblade II trailer it's a great CG, but it's a target video instead of a finished game working on a normal console or gaming PC. I think the Ninjas are very talented and that Hellblade II will look great, but I also highly doubt it will look like that on Series X once we see the game when released in 2 years or so.(compare Hellblade II trailer with original Hellblade).
I always feel that Bungie leaving MS was a bad move. Seems like MS just wanted Halo and Bungie wanted to move on. It's equivalent if Sony decided to let Naughty Dog go since they wanted to move on from Uncharted and work on a new IP, The Last of US.
I dream of a world where Bungie made a new SP FPS while still being under MS wing, and that game was an evolution from Halo from top to bottom and further innovated the FPS world as much as Halo did upon release.
Too bad old Bungie is dead, and Halo just became that old guy trying to fit in with young crowd.
This post/thread sucks. So as many of you I've been busy playing Keanupunk 2017 and completely missed the Game Awards (random thought make the Game Awards should replace E3?)
anyways today i learned MS is forcing The Initiative to reboot Perfect Dark an overrated ok game from the 2000s its sequel was trash. My question is why go around poaching all this hot talent from around the world only for them to make a game from an existing franchise why not allow them to make something that they want?
It just boggles the mind, this is why their first party studio is shait they have clueless people making decisions. Been Xbox 2 gens now Playstation here i come.
We know Microsoft choosing games and micro managing studios does not work. Studios are not going to put out great work on a game they hate and with a boss back seat driving. This approach will work out much better in the long run especially with studios with strong leadership like inexile, playground and obsidian entertainment. As others have pointed out, the main creative behind this chose it.
Does that make me personally kind of skeptical still? Yes.
Microsoft is being hands off with their studios, but that doesn't really guarantee good games any more than being hands-on would guarantee bad games. We'll just have to wait and see.
YesOP is a drama queen.
"One of the most prestigious franchises in gaming history".It is the highest rated fps(alongside Halo CE)
Perfect Dark
From The Initiative comes Perfect Dark, a secret agent thriller set in a near-future world. A re-imagining of one of the best loved IPs in gaming history.www.metacritic.com
Letting creatives do what they want doesn't somehow guarantee better quality. We know Microsoft choosing games and micromanageming studios does not work. Just play Sony's games, they have way too many similarities for their not to be some guidance from leadership on what to include in games. And they are doing amazing.
Yeah I know they've hired a lot of people; but Gallagher is spearheading the game and came up with the idea of it being in the PD universe.I think Sony clearly adheres to a formula for their big AAA games. Most are in the narrative cinematic style. While their games are of great quality and amazing games of that type (Last of Us is one of my favorite games of all time), I’d be lying in saying that those games are not getting stale to me.
Microsoft’s various studios (mostly helped by the ZeniMax purchase in addition to the 2018+ studio purchases) has a greater potential of diversity which excites me more.
Initiative though is more than Darrell Gallagher. He’s hired talent from the very best studios (including Naughty Dog and Rockstar), so I think the ceiling is very high for Perfect Dark.
Yeah I know they've hired a lot of people; but Gallagher is spearheading the game and came up with the idea of it being in the PD universe.
None of that really excites me; and TBH either do a lot of his hires, as like you the more cinematic stuff from Sony is getting stale for me as well... and their hires appear to be targeting that genre.
I'm still hopeful; but I don't have the rose colored glasses some seem to be looking at MS's studios with.
I’m personally more excited for a fully funded Bethesda Game Studios — as long as Microsoft gives them as much time as they need. If they can give Todd Howard the resources he needs to produce a much less buggy experience than normal BGS games, I’ll be extremely happy. It was clear ZeniMax was okay with giving Howard time but they did have trouble with funding.
Perfect Dark is likely gonna be a cinematic style game, but it will be in first person so it may feel a bit different than an Uncharted or Red Dead. The interview made it sound like they were going for a Mirror’s Edge movement system to me (which I do find exciting if that’s the case). Granted, I’m not the most excited for it (until I see gameplay for it anyway). Your concerns are very fair though. It will probably end up being most similar to Sony’s narrative linear cinematic style games.
The games XBS has that excites me the most are Avowed, Fable, and Starfield right now. I would say Halo as well, but I’m concerned with it. They needed Joe Staten on that day one, and I’m not sure if a year is enough time for him to right the ship. I also am wary of them making it a decade long platform if it’s tied with last gen consoles.
