RTX 4090 review thread

Fuck it, I went ahead and got a 1300w EVGA GT PSU. Going from 1000 P2 I'll feel better. Amazon even gave me same day delivery!

Still in store here. Nothing like a 3080 launch but the price is also typical high euro price soo theres that.

With 12900k it's cpu limited. What is happening? What combo is needed for latest games.dlss 3 is a monster👹👹.
What latest games? What games on pc actually need a 4090 or a monster cpu. Maybe if you are streaming and playing on multiple monitor setup but other then that none of this is needed.
A 3080 can play all the games at 4k.
A 3060ti will max all games at 1440p and ultra max at 1080p.l
A 1650 super will still play all the games at 1080p at high settings.

We don't have a Crysis, Quake3, type game on pc like we used to get to warrant this.

If people like all the people in this thread didn't buy these highly expensive , inflated cards for epeen points. then we wouldn't be in this pricing mess.

Is 3dmark worth $1600-2000 worth getting high scores on a benchmark?
Must be nice to have that kinda dough to just waste on a brick of a card that uses too much electricity as it is, especially in a time of sky high energy costs and rampant inflation.

Personally I think these things are too power hungry and too large. One video showed the card was almost as big as a ps5. A ps5.. Why. For what?

Back up 3-4 years ago, and the price of a 1080ti was $700. For the high end gaming model. Not 2k.
A mid range 1060 would be had for $200 or 250 depending on ram quantity.
We allow this madness. Along with greedy miners and the corporations seizing on our thirst for power and prestige.
If we actually had a new pc only Crysis style gaming event I would say sure, but even cyberpunk is maxed on a 3000 series card.

Who didn't see that coming? People bitch and moan but Nvidia GPUs will always sell out.
I saw it coming, but had false hopes given the delay they would have built up more stock.

Not having EVGA in the game really hurts too.

Ehh, if you don't need one now, i'm sure stock will be back up shortly, this isn't like the 3000 cards because of the crypto market at the time.

Pretty disgusting that dlss 3.0 can just be toggled but it's nvidia. They are a small part of the worst group of greedy execs poisoning this industry in decades.

Stock will be fine but it was obviously going to sell out at launch.
Yeah. No pandemic related supply issues. No chip shortage. No bitcoin mining. This thing will be widely available in a few months.

I evens saw pics of the mythical PS5s in stock at Walmart. 3090s have been available at my Microcenter since last year. They were just priced absurdly high at around $2,500 so they would just sit there until some miner picked them up.

this is a GPU that can do 4K 144fps or even higher depending on the game but due to using DP 1.4 it can only display 4K 120hz lol. That's if it's not bottlenecked by current CPUs. Most PSUs are either too weak or don't have the connector for it. And it's using PCIE 4.0 and we don't have PCIE 5.0 SSDs either.

Wait, what? This GPU doesn't support 2.0

That makes no sense! Are they saving it for the ti model or something?

Have the dirty poor GPUs gone up for sale yet? That's the stock I'm most curious about.

I just hope some people who actually want one get one and they dont all end up scalped like everything else lately
Scalping is a consequence of underpricing given the supply and demand. The current generation of Nvidia GPUs is really expensive so perhaps we'll see them being in stock in a couple of weeks (rather than in 1.5 years). Maybe they prices are too high and there will be an abundance of them, we'll see.

Yep. Just wait a few months when all of these new Intel, Nvidia and AMD cards have been released, the whales have been satisfied and common sense has returned. There are currently far too many people who get overcome by FOMO and spend far too much money on stuff they don't really need, but the market will settle soon enough.

True. I can feel the thirst. Had to hold myself from buying one as the benchmarks made me drool.

The performance was never a doubt. Nvidia is a master class but that price is completely unreasonable.

The prices in the EU are insane. Hopefully I can get one at the BX or it'll wait for a trip to the States.

VAT tax my ass.
Any reviews on this card ? I wonder what are the temps on this since it's probably the only card that doesn't have a vapour chamber

Maybe in a few months, but they need to sell these GPUs during the holiday season and before their fiscal year deadline. Maybe after March if they are just sitting on shelves.

I am guessing you mean the 4070 masquerading as a 4080? Isnt that $899. Thats a $400 price increase over the $499 3070. I dont think that console is going to move too many units. The x70 series audience is never going to plung $700, let alone $900 plus tax for a GPU. I saw this for almost two years at microcenter where the 3070 would be in stock every single day and then the 3070 Ti for around $750-899 and no one bought it. They would just sit there during a supposed shortage.

Same thing will happen to the $1,200 4080. Thats what the 2080 Ti went for. The people who buy the x80 cards for $700 arent going to spend an extra $500. The vast majority anyway. I didnt. I waited till it went down to $800, and there is no way Im buying that bs 12 GB card thats very clearly a 4070.

They will sell out initially but this is a huge miscalculation by Nvidia. Hope it blows up in their face.

You saw that picture with that line of people, that is setting the price.

Nvidia seeing things like that probably wishing they would have charged a few hundred more.

To me the worst part of this pricing is that we have nothing to compare it to not having benchmarks of the real 4080 and the disguised 4070 and RDNA 3
At some point this will come off in the market as pure greed by NVIDIA - which is why it's beneficial to wait at this point (IMHO). With RDNA3 cards on the horizon, and the (eventual) release of 4080(70) along with current available existing stock - unless there's a REAL reason to upgrade at this time other than "gotta have the mega FPS"...

you mean the 4080's? No not yet.

To me anything below a XX90 an Ti is now considered a dirty poor GPU. In a tongue in cheek way. But yeah, I want to see how quick the 4080 and faux 4080 go. I'm holding onto my 2070 non-super until we get some performance benchmarks.

Do we have a list of upcoming high refresh rate monitors?

1440p/360hz would be the ideal companion for this GPU if you play shooters, pretty sure you will be able to hit 360fps in warzone 2 with this.

I saw this one https://rog.asus.com/us/articles/gaming-monitors/rog-swift-360hz-pg27aqn/

lots of 240hz options

4k/144hz is the way if you play RPG, etc.

Any written reviews have total system draw or just draw on the AIB models?
Totals system power draw?
Unless you match their system exactly and are doing exactly the same workload its a pretty pointless metric.
But Techspot do Total System with a 5800X3D and some motherboard and some other RAM kit and who knows what HDD/SSD combo.
Power.png

Thats why people only measure the actual card draw.

AIBs are spiking to 520W like thats max max not anything the card will actually be sustaining or an average.
They average out around their TDP in gaming.
power_plus_rt.png

For sustained max they are all pretty much around 470W

Spikes from whats available so far:
  • Vulcan: 490W
  • Gaming OC: 492W
  • FE : 500W
  • Zotac: 502W
  • Suprim X: 505W
  • Strix: 517W
  • Palit: 535W

Seems like the RTX 4090 is the first real graphics card for 4k without compromises.
This is what we are gonna be saying every generational launch right?
The 3090 at launch was basically a 4K120 card giving a pretty damn sizeable boost over the 2080Ti.
Now we laugh at it at 4K resolutions.
average-fps_3840-2160.png

In another two years when the 5000 series launches we will be saying the RTX 5090 is the first 4K card without compromises, the 4090 HAHAHA look at it.
Cant even maintain 4K60.

Yep, it's the reason I finally upgraded from a 1440p/160hz monitor to a 4K/160hz monitor. The 3080 was perfect for 1440/HFR, and the 4090 seems perfect for 4K/HFR.

Now, why are there no reviews of the MSI Gaming Trio cards?!

So it can do 4k/160hz over DP 1.4 .. i thought that was limited to 4k/120hz

Got myself a TUF at £1699 which seems like a steal compared to the Strix at £2200 +. Also got an ATX3 1200w PSU so I'm set for the next 4 years or so.

By 4KHFR you mean above 80 - 90fps?
Then at launch the 3090 pretty much was that.
There was a handful of titles that the 3090 couldnt 4KHFR.

Just like today there are a handful of titles that the 4090 cant 4KHFR.

That depends on what you consider HFR.. I am personally an elitist so anything under 120FPS does not qualify.

Thats fair.
And the 4090 without DLSS already doesnt qualify either.
Which is kinda my point.
Its the greatest graphics card we have ever seen....but the same is said for every flagship at launch.
Yes this is a sizeable gen on gen upgrade....for the xx90s, but lets not act like the 3090 at launch wasnt being praised as the same shit.
Weve been around the block long enough to know in two years we will all be saying the same thing.
Lets just enjoy these new cards without acting like Ampere was some sort of disaster launch.

Not really because I can get ultra settings above 120 frames 4K with dlss on at 4K.

I care about as much as ultra graphics possible I can add. I'll let dlss deal with upscaling as it does a better job than native sometimes

Id highly recommend simply getting the LG OLEDs which are 4k 120fps with gsync over monitors. Very fast input lag and the picture quality in undoubtedly better than even the best monitors.

No one should be spending $1,600 on a graphics card and using it on small monitors imo. 65 inch OLEDs from LG are pretty much the same price.

Display Stream Compression. It's visually lossless. My monitor is 4K/160 (LG 32GQ950-B). 160fps is glorious. Anything under 120 is just... so jerky to me.

80-90 isn't good enough (you know, PC master race). 120+ is minimum, and preferably 144+. I have to make sure to never turn on my 240hz monitor because it ruins me.

On a sidenote, still no MSI Gaming Trio reviews. Crazy...

Suprim liquid looking tasty.

Looks like gigabyte didn't send the waterforce to anyone though which is a shame.

I hate the naming on the Suprim (honestly most "gamer" hardware naming is retarded) but if I do jump on the 40 series cards, I'll probably be looking at that. I've been running a Sea Hawk X 2080tii for a few years now with an externally mounted radiator and the card always runs low temps despite having such a tiny 80mm radiator. My case itself helps temps too but It's made me a fan of hybrid cards. Still want to do a custom loop though, just don't trust my fab skills around $2K+ of parts :messenger_grinning_sweat:
