I bolded the parts of your post that resonated most with me.

All this cultural war hoopla and discord, even within what people call "communities" (LGBTQ+, trans, black, Asian, autistic, etc.), is why I personally use the word "population" instead.
Just because some people (myself included) share certain traits with others, it doesn't mean everyone agrees on specific issues, or that there's even a group consensus.

And especially for HL, there's a range of opinions among the populations, but unfortunately those with the irrational opinions and unhinged responses are making the wider populations look bad.

I agree with your concern about events like these having potential for more people to turn against trans people, and to even go backwards on LGB people.
Whenever I see or hear about these cultural war clashes, I worry about some of my good friends (some trans, some LGB) being smeared by the actions of the terminally online Twitter goons and this Wired writer.

I know it sounds selfish and it hasn't happened yet, but the worry is still there and I'm not sure what to do to alleviate it.

... That all aside, I give this Wired review a 4/10, not in my top 1000 reviews.

Yeah it’s the case with any “big tent”, the attempts to draw a circle around an entire group of people. The danger is when being a part of said group becomes a big part of your identity, if an extremist fringe of a group becomes the loudest voice, they can rally more to their call and become a predominance. Not necessarily because the rest initially felt the same, but because they felt like to continue to belong and exist harmoniously within the group they need to change their thinking to align with the mob.

It’s a very tribal behaviour, happens most in sports and politics. The two biggest recent examples being the trump takeover of the GOP, and more recently that wing of the party becoming pro Russia. It would disgust and outrage many of the old traditional conservative republicans. But things can become a litmus test for belonging to such a community.

It happened here in the uk with Brexit. Belief in Brexit used to be relegated to a tiny fringe of the conservatives. But then unbridled belief in it became, even in the face of ruin, and hard reality the only way to exist within the party.

In this instance we have to hope this sort of purely black and white extremist perspective among segments of the LGBT community don’t become their loudest voice and true north, and that such beliefs become their own “litmus test”. No good can come of it.

As for those who are playing and enjoying the game, and are of a minority or under represented group, whether that be ethnic, lgbtq, or differently abled im sure they feel thrilled to be able to see themselves and people like them in such a huge and accomplished game. The level of diversity and representation both in terms of the character builder but also the cast and NPCs is vast. Which is a big reason I’m so saddened by the vitriol certain people have been throwing towards the game, it’s creators, it’s cast, and it’s fans.

Notice how long it’s taken for them to try to review bomb? It means two things:

1) they assumed everyone would review bomb from day 1, so there was no need to do it. They thought everyone was on their side. Oh what delusional people

2) it’s like when a kid throws a tantrum and no one listens, then later on in desperation they break something to say “see, now you’ll listen”

For a group that’s so extremely vocal and poised to strike, this massive delay says a lot.

Yep. I support free public education from PK-higher ed, I think healthcare in the US (and elsewhere) should be extremely affordable to the point where nobody has to worry about it, if not free entirely, I think the main goal of government should be ensuring that the basic needs of the community/society it serves are met in the form of food, water, shelter, healthcare, and (as a teacher), I'd also throw education in there. I abhor guns, the list goes on and on. I'm not entirely against capitalism because I have no problem with people working to earn more than those basic needs (nobody needs a 3090, PS5, or Lambo), but in general my ideals absolutely lean pretty left.

Yet, because I find SJWs and twitter-culture pretty fucking annoying, I'm sure they'd brand me a raging nazi.

Yeah, I mean we have that here in the uk with the nhs (tho years of underfunding has harmed it), Brits find the American hostility towards such a system truly baffling.

But yea, it’s hard for people when they have a strong pull to one supposed “group”, whether that’s because they tick “most the boxes” so feel it’s where they belong; or because they are a member of a minority group…yet where they are out of step on one or two key issues that come to define said group.

Such as a pro choice republican, or in the case of my friend/neighbour a gay conservative working for the government (who also abhors all the “woke stuff” as he calls it)

I’m mostly a somewhat left leaning centrist, but have never really fit into any group. Tho my conservative friends/colleagues would call me a mega lefty, which seeing what the extremes of the left have become I definitely am not 🤣.

Even with gaming, the console wars being a more contextually relevant expression of these same social dynamics, i identify much more with PlayStation, but also own and play a series X. Tho I see the evangelism in team green of “gamespass” as being the invasive extremist force that has taken over that camp, where critical of the wonders of gamespass can result in knee jerk responses, and i do perceive gamespass (particularly day one release) as a potential threat to the type of games I play (single player narrative adventures) which will become increasingly unustainable in a reality where the next generation of gamers (post activision sale) are conditioned to expect all the years blockbuster games “for free”

That’s also a genre where myself as a cis gender white male have started to feel under represented in the last year. As whilst I understand that female and non white player characters as a whole within games are still hugely under represented. In the specific types of games I personally play, white male leads (except when there’s a character builder) have become extremely rare. I think the only two big ones in recent years from Sony being death stranding, and days gone…the latter of which was slammed for having a gruff white male biker by some segments of the gaming press.

Not that I minded playing as miles, or jin, or Abby etc, and even opted to in cyberpunk, but it’s getting to every darn game at the moment. I swear if when they show off death stranding 2, instead of Norman redus, I’m now playing as fragile, I might faceplant my desk. I’d still play it tho.

I understand why people want to play as characters like themselves, but I don't get why people get so worked up about it.

I'm of a heritage(?) that is probably never going to be represented in computer games, or really anything other than a maybe book. Even if you go back to one of my parent's ethnicity and occupation, the best that is likely to happen is a stereotype. And frankly... I'm just fine with that. I'll enjoy the odd game that has player created characters, but even then I might not try to recreate myself.

What I'm not fine with is diverse characters being shoehorned into settings where it doesn't make sense.

Sure but, how often was there a situation where "it doesn't make sense" and who decides that? If those making the content are putting a character there, they decide what makes sense in that world...

It would be like saying an Asian character in the Last Of Us 2 wouldn't make sense and base it on some statistic, disregarding the person who is making the content is establishing what does and doesn't "make sense" in that world.

So it sounds dumb for the most part.

Most who even claim this shit can't even really cite when something was "shoehorned" as they don't make the content, how do you know that wasn't the intent of some writer or artist? Why would they need to some how prove to you what they decided belonged or not in their work? lol

It makes zero sense.

Just play the game, read the book, watch the film.

Devs have no relation to JK. Why shit on their work when it will have no material impact on JK activities? If they wanted to boycott, they should have just boycotted. Writing a dishonest review makes it seem like they just want to drive clicks, earn the ad revenue but get internet points for pretending to be supportive of a minority group.

In the enchanted realm, a storm has been brewing. Tensions have arisen between the trans community and the launch of a new game, as the trans community felt that the author of the source material held transphobic views.

In an effort to bring the game to its knees, the trans community took to spreading spoilers and leaving negative reviews, but their actions were met with unforeseen consequences. It was soon discovered that the game was not only well-received by the masses but also devoid of any transphobic content.

The trans community's actions, driven by distrust and fuelled by their emotions, have unfortunately cast a shadow upon their cause, causing those who were once impartial to view them with disdain. This serves as a poignant reminder that even in the magical world of wizardry, the decisions we make during moments of conflict can have far-reaching and lasting effects.

Therefore, the trans community would do well to learn from this lesson, and channel their fervour in a way that is both productive and effective in their fight for rights and acceptance. As we have seen in the battles of Hogwarts, bravery, wit, and unity are the keys to vanquishing the forces of intolerance.

Let us stand in solidarity with the trans community, offering our support as they strive to create a world where diversity is embraced and all are accepted for their true selves. Let us do our part by purchasing and playing the game, showing the trans community that they are not alone in their fight.

Thank you ChatGPT for helping me to write that! The game is great btw!

MOST IMPORTANTLY!
REMEMBER THAT MOST PEOPLE WHO ARE TRANS ARE NOT TRYING TO RUIN THE GAME. THEY JUST WANT TO BE LOVED AND ACCEPTED LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

A black guy as the lead character in a mainline Witcher or Lord of the Rings thing. A white person being in 14th century Mali. An Asian person being in ancient Rome. Etc., etc.

Whole thing is a complete joke. I hope it sells like fucking crazy just to piss these lunatics off even more and show them how little they really matter.

Could've just not covered the game. But no, had to make a statement with a ridiculous review, for those woke clicks.
Either way all publicity is good publicity so this "review" is probably gonna have the opposite effect.

Yes, they have tried. But as we have said time and time again these alt left activists are just a vocal minority that should be ignored as they are not the customer.

Proof positive that their boycott and review bombing is about as damaging as a bug hitting a windshield.

This is what I like to call the "look at what you made me do" stage of the meltdown.

Happens very often and it's funny when you anticipate it. It's also sad but, you know, once you see it coming it has minimal impact if any.

What do they use to say... "it's freedom of speech, not freedom of consequence of what you say".
Is it?
It’s so true

Gaming publishers need to ask if they would be okay with these kind of agenda driven hitpieces for their own games they've worked hard on.

Wired should be blacklisted for good from review copies and meta/open critic. This is not a legitimate media outlet... What a clown world when someone who is writing about vibrators and dildos reviews a game out of pure hatred.

Finally got the archive to load and Holy fuck

"Dame J. K. Rowling, CH, OBE"

Like we needed her full title to know who created the potterverse. I'm strapped in for terrible prose.

Case in point, haha! The terms "Asian" and even "Asian-American" are very, very broad.

Even if you try to specify with an ethnic origin like "Chinese," "Japanese," or "Korean," you'll get all sorts of people, opinions, and life circumstances.
I've also gained glimpses of what Asian people from different countries think of each other (Japanese and Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese, and the many combinations), and oh boy THOSE conversations can get out of hand quick. :p

He looks like a fucking moron. Anyway, this review is utter trash. Not to be taking seriously at all. It’s just a way to try get back at the devs and JK Rowling and people who purchased the game. Well guess what- too late fuck heads! We’ve all purchased it and we LOVE it!
