Ani, how could your list ignore MGS4?
The IGN MGS4 review was the first time I ever distinctly read a review and went "yeah...smells like bullshit"
Particularly their 10s across the board.
EDIT: Ahahahaha, I'd forgotten:
Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title that exceeds all of the hype that was attached to the title.

obligatory for mentioning MGS4 in a review thread

i guess i was counting first-party games only. mgs4 totally fits the bill though, especially when it gets a 30-post opening ceremony in its official thread.

pokemon fans are in the same neighborhood as that vacuum. or at least the same school district.
Do you want to proofread my latest fanfic about Arcanine and Ninetails? It’s a unique twist on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. I really think it might be my best work yet. There are definitely some adult themes, so I'm going to need to make sure you're at least 18.

I could really use the feedback.

I would never lump in Pokemon fans with Sonic fans.

Sonic fans have the gaming equivalent of battered wife syndrome. They've been repeatedly abused by Sonic Team and it's driven them insane.

The Pokemon games are still pretty good, so Pokemon fans don't have that road-hard-and-put-away-wet mentality of Sonic fans.

Nothing will even approach 8.8. The lead up to TP was a special set of circumstances that don't apply here.
Specifically the launch title status, the years of hype over "machoor Zelda," the almost unprecedented nature of a Zelda game being scored that "low" by a major outlet, Gerstmann making specific claims about the controls that were subjective (which provided fodder when viewed along with their Wii Sports coverage), and that it was probably the beginning of the "Zelda is starting to be too much like Zelda," general opinion.

any company on the ropes suddenly becomes home to the most unstable ones. the late 90s it was the sega fanboys. 2001-2005 it was the nintendo fanboys. 2006-2009 it was the sony fanboys. now it's shifting back to the nintendo fanboys again. you can usually tell this is the case when each upcoming game is suddenly going to be the greatest thing ever, because it's that one thing that will validate their choice (regardless of the game's actual quality). see: shenmue, metroid prime, geist, twilight princess, super smash bros. brawl, lair, killzone 2, uncharted 3, skyward sword, etc.

I don't think it's on the ropes so much as generational shifts is where things start getting crazy. I think after 2003 or so most Nintendo fans accepted the Gamecube for what it was. Just like I think by 2009 most Sony fans accepted PS3 and PSP for what they were. It's where the generational shifts occur do things get crazy if you need any further example look at the IGN thinks Vita will sell better than 3DS thread. I'll occasionally get into a discussion/debate with users on a topic but when it's controlled. I just lurk and laugh at the mass hysteria threads like the afformentioned IGN thread where there is stupidity and craziness coming out from all directions and there's no use debating or correcting people. Two years from now when things have settled I think most fanboys will have calmed down and accepted the system's fates.

Yes. Thanks for saying what I was too lazy to.

I've really helped my own hype by not caring or looking at anything revolving around SS. Then it gets a 10 and I watch a video and suddenly Dark Souls isn't a lock for my GOTY.

Sure, but only if you promise to look at my Mewtwo x Ash fanart

This thread needs more actual reviews to talk about. :/

Sounds sweet! Maybe you can do some art to go along with my story? We can PM some of your early work to Serenade to see if he approves.

Pretty much how I feel, though I haven't watch anything yet. All of a sudden, it's really tempting, though...and Dark Souls is gonna be tough to top. That's the sort of game that makes you want to quit your job. Two games of that magnitude in the same short time frame hasn't happened since Ocarina of Time/Metal Gear Solid.

I think Jeff's "spin attacks are unresponsive" was only eclipsed by 1UP's "ubers are nearly impossible in SSX Blur" years later in terms of controversy over motion controls, and then that by Eurogamer's "RE4 Wii controls worse than the GC version."

I can't think of any other review kerfuffles over motion controls right now.

the spin attacks in twilight princess with the nunchuk are great. one of my favorite parts of the controls, next to the bow (which is the real star of the show).

The price is not the point. My Wii is older than 2 years so the fact here remains than in order to play SS i need to buy an extra hardware part. With the Uncharted example you provided i simply don't have to.It's just that i don't like companies to force me buying peripherals that i know i won't use ever again, especially near the end of a generation. This is only my opinion if you enjoy to spend extra money in order to play a game be my guest. But you don't have the right to call other people stupid just because they don't like these policies.
I didn't call you stupid; I said that something you said sounded stupid. Big difference.

And you're paying $20 for a limited edition version of a $40 controller. Think about what that means. Also keep in mind that it's only $10 more than a AAA HD game.

It sucked in TP only because the spin attack needed a similar motion. Nintendo fixed that in SS.

especially when you get accustomed to holding the nunchuck sideways, off to the side. and then you do the spin instead of shield bashing.

Okay, so who here is going to outcrazy that? Somebody sign up!

It most likely won't get nearly that bad. The circumstances that surrounded TP are not here this time around and at this point, most will be in the "It's Zelda, it'll get good scores" mindset like Galaxy 1 and 2 (which oddly outscored Uncharted 3 by a fair margin and didn't attract nearly the amount of web craziness, but that's neither here nor there).

Yeah. I feel like EDGE's 10 is going to condition some people a certain way.

Best to expect the worse, people (if you care about reviews.)

"I played the DS games and I still don't know what happened."

Stopped listening there. I wanted to punch my screen.

If you found the story in a Zelda game too complicated, you have serious issues.

You sound awfully sure of yourself. Lemme guess, they'll say it sucks because their arms get tired and the graphics were dumb and kiddie?

From ONM podcast, they don't talk too much about the game, but one thing really got my attention: they say the conntrols are incredible and that they had no problems with calibration: press down on dpad to recalibrate (no need to put the controller on a flat surface). =D

The only way that could happen is if it's compared to PS3 and 360 games on a technical le- Damn, you're right. "This should have been saved for Wii U" will be everywhere.

On a technical level? SWEET, clearly the supposed superior use of motion controls in SS to most other motion games ever will win the day for reviewers.

i think the main complaints will be that it doesn't stray too much from the traditional zelda formula, and that the motion controls aren't for everyone. also how much it would have benefited from next-gen hardware (which would be true).

also, on closer inspection, the lowest score given to a console zelda was a 7 out of 10 (tww), so it's kind of a high bar in terms of low opinions, but i think skyward sword will surprise people.

Speaking of the controls... How are they? Is controlling the sword like Wii Sports Resort's dual mode (leaning towards 1:1) or like controlling the saber in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed? (more like gestures for button presses)

Almost exactly like Wii Sports Resort. They feel good.

Dear Zelda fans,

When the reviews hit worldwide please don't be like Uncharted fans

Sincerely,

Fellow GAFer and Zelda fan.

Skyward Sword will be heavily mixed. It will get its share of hyperbolic 'BEST GAME OF ALL TIME' reviews because its Zelda, and it will also get a good few "derp derp the controls suck" because its a motion controlled game. The latter will work against it in the long run, I think, regardless of how good those motion controls are.

Either way, there will be meltdowns. Zelda has enough rabid, psychotic fans to know that the moment a negative review pops up they'll go for blood.

On one hand I dread it. On the other hand the Uncharted 3 thread was/is hilarious, and I'm not opposed to more fanboy tears.
