Silent Hill HD Collection |OT| Programmed in Smoke Signals

KAOz

Short bus special
I may be wrong but aint music changed only when 5.1 sound is enabled. If disabled the music is unchanged even when new voices are selected.

Oh, okey. Didn't know about that. I've only heard the new music with the new voices, so I figured that was it.

Awesome correction. Thank you.

"EDIT: I started Soundless Mountain once but something distracted me.

Jasper Byrne's Soundless Mountain II is a pretty big deal to me and other indie devs, so that's exciting to hear. His new horror game, Lone Survivor, is something all Silent Hill fans should play (http://www.lonesurvivor.co.uk/).

So is my own soon-to-be-released pixel horror game, but I won't be that self-serving. :)

Thanks for answering questions, Tomm. I know this isn't easy. I'm still really disappointed that I dont have the definitive version of Silent Hill 2 with this collection, especially since I got rid of my PS2 a while back.

Right now, being a Silent Hill fan is like being a Star Wars fan; I'm so conflicted!

ROFL, I figured this would look bad: (late game location spoilers) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTZeeVJYS98#t=30s

Holy crap at that water...

God. Fucking. Dammit.

I just keep saying to that to myself as I wonder how the hell anyone could've looked at that, or anything else brought up in the thread, and said 'We can ship it in this state! Honest!'.

What the Hell. Goddamn.

Who did this port? Internal Konami team? Don't these guys take any pride in their work? This is just awful.

I'm sending an email to Konami. Can't hurt.

The games were ported by Hijinx Studios.

Wow The only thing that really bothered me in the few minutes I played so far was the framerate, but that is ridiculous. The script and voiceover stuff I can let go, because honestly the last time I played this game was when it launched on PS2 and I don't remember as many details as some of you guys do (ignorance is bliss?). At the very least though I hope all these technical issues get ironed out. Even if the game was locked at 30 fps that would be preferable to frequent fps dips.

I'm kind of glad the PAL version was delayed. Seeing how the PS3 version seems to be busted and reading that they knew about that before they shipped is really disappointing. Sad that it's okay to just ship a product that doesn't work as intended simply because you can fix it later. Especially because it completely ignores that many, many people don't have internet access on their consoles and don't have access to patches. Well, guess my money goes somewhere else.

The whole thing looks like it is being run through a very poor emulator or something. That water bit near the end there is unbelievably bad.

I actually sat down with the PS2 version again last night on my CRT and, man, does the atmosphere hold up. Horror gaming on a CRT is the only way to go. When you use the original hardware (both screen and system) the game was designed for the effect is quite impressive.

I actually loaded up my PC copies of SH2 and 3 as well (all those discs >_<). SH2 really is not a great port, just as I remembered. So many missing details throughout and I made the mistake of viewing it on my PC monitor (an LCD). I would go so far as to say that Silent Hill 2 is not compatible with LCD displays. It simply doesn't work. The art direction clashes directly with the LCD backlight. Only a high-end plasma or an LCD with high quality LED local dimming could really handle it, I'd argue. The atmosphere vanishes.

I can only imagine stepping down to the awful HD Collection version where you combine painful glitches with this problem. The atmosphere of the game would be completely destroyed.

Seriously, though, if you want to replay it and remember why it made such an impact back in 2001 go find a good CRT, a PS2, and a copy of the game. Turn out the lights and turn down the brightness of the TV a bit and you'll be transported to another world.

Honestly, I don't have any faith that they will be able to "fix" this collection. It's pretty clear that the programmers over at HiJinx simply couldn't handle this project. Konami should rush BluePoint in to rescue this game, though it's probably way way too late for that. They fucked up and there's simply no way they can fix it.

After reading all the backash in this thread, I'm so glad I still have my original PS2 collection and will gladly play the pixelated versions over this crap.

I don't think it's possible to fix these ports at all. The only thing that could be done would be to port the games from scratch again, but that's obviously not gonna happen.

lol @ my sentence. Fixed it now.

I honestly hope they can fix it somehow. I was so ready to buy this but it seems like I'll just have to play them again on my PS2. Glad I still have a CRT around because playing them on anything else would not be a good idea. :/

VO, framerate, technical errors aside: The more gameplay comparison videos come out, the more this iteration looks like a washed out, cold, horribly directed mess that tampers with the basic, original color and effects schemes enough to constitute a complete devolution.

Edit: Lime hooking it up with those graphics recommendations though, has made the PC look beautiful.
Edit Edit: In other words, they missed the point entirely and actually made an inferior product, which does not deserve to be bought. Just got Silent Hill 3 with the soundtrack disc for 40$ on Amazon, and it was one of the higher items on the list.

Don't be expecting a do-over, not when there's a willing media offering up slavish praise:

"Silent Hill 2 was a visually stunning game when it first released back in 2001, and this is arguably the most extensive remastering of the recent group of games that have been re-released. Re-releasing games with updated visuals is an increasingly popular trend these days, with Resident Evil, God of War, Devil May Cry, Beyond Good & Evil, Shadow of the Colossus, and ICO all being remastered in the last handful of years. They're largely hit or miss, but it's obvious that quite a bit of time and effort was invested into making SH2 and 3 look and sound as great as possible."

I'm quite baffled at how no site, except for Destructoid, mentioned this abomination.

I'm also speechless how Konami can just sit there, pretend like nothing's wrong and just wait until this whole thing blows over. Pathetic.

The reviewer must have been deaf, drunk and blind. Hell, for all I know he might probably have been dead when reviewing the HD collection.

I actually wish that publishers would call out stuff like this. They clearly did not play the game to review it. I know no publisher ever would but it would be humorous.

It's so funny to read this thread now, days after my initial negative reaction to the early impressions upon the game's release.

Ugh. These impressions are confirming all of our worries. Worst HD collection ever confirmed. Konami will not be seeing a dime from me for this shameless raping of two timeless classics.

After posting that, I was met with replies like these:

I'm fairly confident that most people's impressions in here are positive...

Shit like this is ridiculous. Chill out, it's fine. Impressions have been good overall, and it's not like they burned all your original copies.

Which impressions are you reading?

Positive impressions my ass. This is gaming's equivalent of the Holocaust in my eyes.

But you never did...

The collection should have that as a review quote on the front.

I can see the twist of the next SH game. You play as a concentration camp inmate fleeing from a fiery, Hellish otherworld populated by smoke entities. At the end of the game it is revealed that the inmate never existed, it was just a hallucination by one of the ovens in Auschwitz trying to forget what it had been used for. Silent Hill: Firestorm, coming 2015.

Will the next "batch" of HD Silent Hill be SH4 and the PSP game?

You really think they'll bother porting SH4 and 0rigins after this shitstorm?

So after all this, the ps2 version still reign supreme?

PS2 Greatest Hits version for SH2, PS2/PC version for SH3.

PC version is missing some effects, is it not?

The PC port of SH2 is missing some effects, and doesn't support mouse, so it plays like shit with keyboard only IIRC. The PC port of SH3 is amazing.

PC version in 1080p with anti aliasing and everything... so good. despite the few missing effects.
Honestly, I find that the high resolution, super sharp shadows, and pared back fog actually interfere enough with the atmosphere that the game ends up losing a lot. As noted above, I loaded up my PC copy in addition to playing the PS2 version on a CRT and, man, PS2 +CRT is still THE way to play the game. 1080p on an LCD with SH2 is a really bad mix that spoils the atmosphere.

It's one of those rare series where cleaner, brighter visuals are NOT a good thing. There are a lot of details that are meant to be obscured that suddenly become visible and clear.

I will concede a little bit on SH2, but I love it's complex fog versus the haze wall of the PS2. But SH3 on PC is fucking nigh untouchable with its resolution and widescreen hack.

Girlfriend has a pharmacy school interview tomorrow... in Virginia... where Silent Hill is located (well, according to the movie). So we're about to take a four hour road trip there today. And it's raining. We're also staying in a creepy ass hotel in the mountains tonight-- it's the closest place to stay near the campus.

I dont think the PS2 versions look too bad on a 37in LCD with component after checking my discs last night. Sure you've got the aliasing, but the games still look nice.
