Max Payne 3 - New Tech & Design Video Coming Tomorrow - 03/15

Anyone know how the original games run on 360 BC? They're on sake for ten bucks each, tempted to just buy them both right now.

I bought the first one from the XBLM and played it a bit last night. It doesn't run as smoothly as it does on my PC (which isn't all that powerful to begin with), but it runs well enough on 360 and it's still a lot of fun.

I'm so excited for Max Payne 3 it's not even funny. I love the character and as my interest in most games is starting to wane, it's pretty much the only game I'm truly looking forward to playing this year.

It's a shame the old games don't have widescreen support on PC :/

Yes they do. They even have the ability to change FOV.

The FOV correction solution has the same proportion problem as in Max Payne 1, but on the plus side, it's a lot simpler to perform. Just go to the game directory, and open up the file "MP2_init.ras." Search for this line:
DefaultFOV = 70; // degrees
Change it to:
DefaultFOV = 85; // degrees
Now launch the game, select a widescreen resolution, and you're set.

Dean Takahashi is smitten by Max 3 . . .
Having played a couple of levels of Max Payne 3 hands-on, I’m looking forward to this game — which resembles a John Woo action movie — in a big way. If Max Payne 3 succeeds, it will give a much-needed boost to the hardcore game industry and help both Rockstar and Take-Two further diversify beyond the Grand Theft Auto series.

The good thing about the new Max is that Rockstar has created pent-up demand for it. It has taken its time with development and slow-cooked this piece in a franchise which hasn’t had a sequel since 2003. The game uses the Euphoria engine to deliver outstanding graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence on a plane far above most current-generation titles. The violence and blood are over the top.

...

I expect this game to score above the 89 out of 100 and 86 review scores that the first two games got on Metacritic, a review aggregator.

I hope it is as good as he promises.

Take some screens.

One nice thing is that a lot of old games just read the resolution off your drivers so I dropped 1440x1080 into my custom resolutions and games like Max Payne 1/2 pick it up allowing me to play a flawless 4:3 pixel mapped res with black bars protecting the aspect ratio integrity. Drop some 8x SGSSAA on top of that and I can almost get over the lack of widescreen.

Max Payne 3 PS3 had shoulder aiming and shooting as L2 and R2. Pretty disappointing!

L2/R2 shooting?

barney-goodnightqkjcd.gif

Hate L2/R2 shooting. Well, hopefully the option to swap is there, RDR had the ability to swap L2/R2 to L1/R1

Do we know how long the single player is in this?

R* employee was quoted as saying 8-10 hours.

How did the PS3 version stack up to the 360 version? Did you have a chance to check? Are they on par or is it another RDR/GTA situation?

I didn't actually. I went and tried out the PC version which is pretty gosh darn awesome with mouse and keyboard! I managed to take a picture of the PS3 controls for you though!

In case you can't see that first 4, L2 is shoulder aim, L1 is weapon wheel, R2 is fire/melee(when close), and R1 is shoot dodge.

Ah sneaky. Thanks for that.

Know of two people that played the PC version and they said it was fantastic. My brother-in-law who was with them played the 360 version and absolutely loved it.

Don't know anyone who tried it on PS3, but I haven't heard anything bad about it yet. For the PS3 crowd's sake, hopefully you can switch the shoulder button controls around like you could in Red Dead.

Looks similar to Red Dead's control scheme. Especially like the use of the d-pad to switch shoulders. Don't have a problem with R2 for shooting, as I'm using a trigger attachment. Also, select for weapon attachments? Gun customization?

I don't understand why Rockstar keeps defaulting aim/fire to L2/R2. Proof that a developer does not give a single fuck about the PS3 versions of their games, I guess.

On Twitter they confirmed you could switch it, thank fuck. It honestly would have almost ruined the game for me if you couldn't. Hopefully the tech side of things is up to snuff this time.

I got my hands on it at PAX on Saturday and I honestly thought the controls were fantastic.

L2/R2 shooting seems fine to me for this sort of game, based on the volume of bullets fired and how every trigger "pull" has a lot of weight and impact. Max moves his reticle quickly with enough gravity and weight to feel real, and those triggers need some swing in order to give each bullet their needed due. If Max moved like a Killzone character, then maybe I'd have an issue, but in this game it just felt right to me.

How did it look? Was the framerate smooth?

For 360 framerate was pretty bad. But Simon did say it was an old build that framerate has been worked on. Felt good for me. If somebody said it here before, I'll say it again. Max Payne 3 is not a run and gun type of game. You absolutely NEED cover and need to figure out what you're doing before you do it or you will die.

Wut. Impressions were saying the exact opposite earlier? Or was I reading them the wrong way?

Basically it's just like old Max Payne.

You run around blindly, you die. You run with purpose, you live.

This is why bullet time exists, the game makes you need it, its not just for special effects.

Cover is a respite for planning your attack. Running in blind without knowing what you wanna do is a recipe for death. But the enemies are super aggressive, remain in cover and they WILL kill you. Which is why you need to be constantly thinking on the fly on what to do next, etc. That's why Bullet-Time is a necessary mechanic.

Got to play both the 360 and pc versions of the game. Both looked fantasic with the pc version looking sharper with a fucking solid framerate. That is the versio I will definitely be getting. I played the pc version with and xbox controller and then the dev let me replay the mission using the mouse and keyboard. Both controlled very well, but I still preferred the controller. It is weird becuase I have only played the original two games on pc. The controller just makes more sense for me now that there is more variety in controlling Max.

I only got to play the NEw York level since I played it on Sunday. The level starts in a bar right when a gunfight begins with these mafia guys. The controls I felt were really responsive, the animations for Max are seriously an awesome thing to see. I did see some comment on here about some people feeling differently saying they are horrible. The only thing I can really say to that is, A - they suck at games, or they were just firing from the hip most of the time. I found that the aiming felt a little "floaty" but then soon understood that holding the LT would have Max aim down the sites and you can find tune your shots, especially useful when in slow mo.

I saw someone say that you HAVE to use cover while playing the game. The first time I played I found myself using cover a lot. I think that this is also a result of kind of being trained by recent games to feel like you should alway resort to cover. I ,ade it a point in my next play through to use cover sparringly and really try to mix it up with using the other mechanics. If you are smart with how you use slo mo and the shoot dodge you will not have to resort to using cover as much.

Some other things that blew me away were the little features they had. One that I found was when taking out the last enemy in an area it would cut to a cinematic view of the kill. When this is happening you can hold the A button and control the speed to slow it down ever further. You could even fire more shots at the enemy while this is happening. Pretty fun to watch. Lastly, the executions....holy shit some of these are brutal. Similar to RDR, when you are close to an enemy and hit the fire button it will activate an execution move. Every gun has a different execution, and also different depending on the angle in which you attack. What I liked about it is that you actually get to initiate the kill at the end of the sequence. For example, the most brutal execution I did was with the pump action shotgun. Max swinger the butt of the gun into the enemies face and then threw him to the ground, then took aim right at the dudes face. Pressing RT finished the execution. My mind of blown!!

So that's all I could really think of so far. I seriously cannot wait for this fucking game!!

Yep, the word on the street is that the game is definitely no cakewalk, and that the cover system is there for a reason. Which is great to hear :)

Man, Rockstar is like, totally stealing from Rogue Warrior amirite?

Not as much as his.

I can't wait to bust out my Collateral suit (it's a shade darker than the one that Max wears, but it's close) next Month.

Also, here is a video preview from IG (Inside Gaming); of course it has footage from the old series videos. Nothing new, just vocal impressions:

I was also thinking Collateral style, but I might just break out the old trenchcoat and go as Trenchcoat-and-Tie Payne style. Always a classic.

Now I wonder what specs the PC version was demoed with.

If it goes by the same new version, upgraded engine as GTA IV or whatever improvement the did you can imagine the specs. I hope the game will not end up with tens of patches, this is Max Payne and I don't want to see that coming.
IV had a lot of settings, but what I hope is they will make Max Payne with less video game advanced settings or at least some settings that aren't necessary how IV has.

THANK GOD!

You have that link?

To be fair, only GTAIV was awful with e L2/R2 to shoot due to the fact you had to press R2 ALL THE WAY DOWN for it to even register ...THAT felt like total shit.

So many impressions saying that the game's hard. I have to wonder whether it's actually difficult, or if people are just new to the game and trying to play it like something it's not.....or whether they just suck.

This is actually interesting. I'm wondering if it feels like a different type of shooter as well- perhaps, the control scheme takes some getting used to? Most of the previews I've read are mentioning the difficulty level. Another night, closer to May 15th!

"The past is a gaping hole. You try to run from it, but the more you run, the deeper, more terrible it grows behind you, its edges yawning at your heels. Your only chance is to turn around and face it. But it's like looking down into the grave of your love, or kissing the mouth of a gun, a bullet trembling in its dark nest, ready to blow your head off."

Played the PS3 version Saturday; it was incredible. The Rockstar dev who did my walkthrough was super nice; we talked about the old Max Payne games as well as a bit of RDR. The game feels absolutely incredible; he actually let me switch the shoulders and turn off the invert that the guy before me had turned on. There was a brilliant moment where a thug was hiding behind a wood panel above a bar; the R* guy told me to shoot through the wood to kill him, and I ran up the stairs and did a bullet time dive straight into the guy, shooting him in the face with a shotgun.Max actually landed on top of his body and stood up and got off. It was so fucking great. This game is going to be amazing.

i really dislike the graphics to this game, i'm not sure why but i do

I'm not digging into the graphics either. Resembles so much to IV, especially the effects like gunshot flames [to big and strange alpha cropped textures] and blood splatter, [way too much], bullethole mark, blood mark etc, compare with the old two that are at least close to reality and something classic.

This sentence sticks out to me. It's thrown out in the article as a stand alone sentence, without any real context or explanation. Is he projecting his endorsement? Is he talking about the full-frontal media push that Rockstar has thrown behind MP3, compared to its predecessors?

I expect this game to score higher than its predecessors too, but that has just as much to do with our gilded, well-fed "critics" as the quality of the game.
