Risen 2 |OT| Set sail for awesome!

Actually, no. If you played a previous Risen or Gothic before you should know what to expect: lots of quests where you have to pick sides and you have plenty of ways to resolve the same problem.
If anything, Piranha Bytes' NPC interaction is above the average, not below.

Well, the reviews of this game is not giving me the impression, that´s the problem. I can of course be convinced that they are wrong, but I´m not buying the game until either:

a. They are proven wrong
b. The game drops in price and I have less other games that I want to play first.

Played 2 hours so far. It's pretty neat, but I'm really not liking the combat at this point. There's no dodge ability like in the previous Risen, so right now I can do nothing but spam the attack button or get destroyed. I assume it will get better when I learn some more skills, but the lack of the dodge ability really hurts the combat, in my opinion.

The performance is fine on my computer, but Jesus, the pop-in is horrible. I'm gonna see if I can't find a config file or something to mess around with the settings. Also, I'm not sure what I think about all types of food being lumped together as 'provisions'.

I agree with these sentiments. There's lots of weird LOD stuff in this game, issues with textures popping in and also foliage appearing suddenly or changing size weirdly. I'm running the game on an overclocked i7 and a GTX 470. It performs well on the new beta drivers, with adaptive Vsync turned on.

The game seems a little more challenging than the first to me, so far. I did also make the mistake of putting my first glory points into guns...though I just got a pistol and that's helped me a bit.

I agree. Combat feels really wonky. I spent a good 20 minutes though fighting Severin the trainer and eventually beating him. Hopefully with added skills, we get better combat options because right now it's just hold parry until the enemy stops attacking.

My mouse sensitivity was through the roof when I first started. I put it down to the least sensitive (0.1) and it does okay now, except that vertical camera movement is MUCH slower than lateral camera movement. Fairly annoying.

Ambient noise such as rain in the beginning was HELLA loud. I had to turn that down.

Graphics aren't that great, but I could care less. Gameplay is PB's forte.

I don't normally play games "day one" but I get the feeling that this game is still fairly unrefined. On my i5-2500k and GTX 570, it runs fine but my graphics card sounds like it's going to blow up.

P.S. What is "pop-in?"

edit: omg, also, does the main menu theme song like Fallout 3 or what!?

The animations are bad, the shadows aren't great, way too much blur during dialogue, the cutscene camera angle changes so often and suddenly, from a close first person view to several inches zoom in and out.. It's def distracting

Im getting good performance with the 680 and i5 2500k

these are first hour spoilers so i'm not going to bother:

after leaving on a boat (WTF - bad idea, right? considering the circumstances) did anyone else decide to go exploring? did you turn left after exiting the ship and end up finding nothing? i couldn't pass the mountain on my right after jumping over several other mountains (screen: http://i.imgur.com/iYrrg.jpg ) I expected to at least find one rare ingredient.

so then i trod back to the ship and find a large, vegetated rock outcropping. I figure there's something cool up there -- could anyone else climb this? (screen: http://i.imgur.com/nIl1K.jpg )

please excuse the steam F12 screenshots.

Impressions

Game is horrible in the best way ever. But, it's also still horrible!

I've only played maybe an hours of this game, not enough to even get a gun, so these are very early impressions and I am likely totally wrong about specifics.

Combat's a massive point of interest. Specifically sword combat. The game tells you it has a combo system - great! The first combo? Mouse1, mouse1, mouse1. Wonderful. This is your primary means of attack against non-human enemies. You are also prompted to one other ability, a parry. Hold RMB down, you block indefinitely. The great thing about this ability, being a parry, is that it does not work in the slightest against enemies without something to parry. Hold down RMB against a little scampering sea monster? Shit's gonna gut you like a fish. Because as a fish, that is the only way it knows.

NOTE: THE HUMAN COMBAT TALK IS BASED ONLY ON FIGHTING OTHERWISE FRIENDLY NPCS IN "TRAINING" - THIS COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG FOR ACTUAL ENEMIES.

Conversely, combat against human opponents is a polar opposite! If you do not hold down block, you are -fucked-. There is no way to break enemy animation priority, so once they start attacking you, you have no means to stop them by attacking. You have to block. Thankfully, for the most part, your parry ability is infallible. Only a few attacks get through, although it is entirely random as to when they will do those. Combat against sword wielding human enemies is perhaps the single worst combat system I have ever encountered. The method to the madness is to hold down block until you are relatively certain the enemy isn't going to attack you for the next 3 seconds (there is no animation system in place to make it clear if this will be true or not) - you then issue a single attack against the enemy, and IMMEDIATELY HOLD DOWN THE BLOCK BUTTON AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT - WHICH IT DOES. Because attacks do not stutter enemies, they can attack you immediately after, or even while being attacked themselves. The worst part to this is that your blocking takes roughly half a second to initialise (with no animation to justify why it's taking this long, as your guy just snaps to position). Enemies take, assuming you have super shitty non-armour like I did at the start of the game, a very large portion of your health (again this is against actual friendly npcs in training so this could be skewed on the basis that I am under levelled?) out.

Okay, so apart from combat possibly being the worst thing in the world, here are some boring dotpoint notes

- Audio levels? What's that?! - When you enter the radius of two NPCs having a conversation, their dialogue audio just drowns out absolutely everything else. There is absolutely no fading out the audio the further away you are to these NPCs, so they're as loud up close as they are at the edge of the radius. When you exit the radius, audio cuts out IMMEDIATELY. No fade out, just immediately clipped out. Entering back into the radius causes NPCs to repeat the dialog you exited on.

- Voice acting is a mix of competent or hilariously slurred. Dialog sometimes makes some kind of sense when it's just massive exposition dumps, but some of the side npcs just say the vaugest fucking things. "I CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT NOW".

- Technically stuff looks really nice. Artistically, humans look incredibly awkward. And the animations in cutscenes and dialogue is so amazingly fucked up. Characters pivot and skew themselves, swinging their arms with wild abandon trying to shove their post-modern context unaware plot down your ear-throat. It's great.

- Pressing space to jump while standing still is perhaps the gold medal for underachievement.

- Pressing space to jump while moving is a feat bestowed to Magneto and paper aeroplanes.

- Don't jump down stairs, or you will kill yourself.

- Scripting in the starting area is weird. Try jumping onto the beach at the start, from the castle walls.

- PEOPLE FREAK THE FUCK OUT WHEN YOU ENTER RESTRICTED ZONES, HOLY SHIT. They will come running with blood in their eyes.

- If you have read this far I assume you for some reason care about what I have to say so here is me actually playing the game http://www.twitch.tv/kritz7/b/316301357 and giving some really boring, slurred, "I have no idea how to commentate this shit" kinda crap going on. Due to the way I play games, most of it is spent actively seeking out oddities instead of playing the damn thing. So you can watch this to see how bad I am at video games. I am a complete fucking hypocrite and never noticed my microphone was super quiet.

- They don't seem to care as much when you accidentally attack them multiple times.

- Some of the translation stuff is amazing. KEYSTROKE ASSIGNMENT. What? Alright! When you die, the screen just says "END".

- When you attempt to do a charisma skill check, if your skill is too low, your character will vocalise, out loud, with full animations, "I don't have the skill to do that". They will say this to the person you are talking to.

- When NPCs smile it looks like THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE:
RTSdt.jpg

- The depth of field effects look nice and while it's not a visually impressive game, it's still nice to look at.

- Game is extremely similar to Two Worlds 2. Both in general quality (i.e., pretty rubbish) and, um, how much I like it (i.e., I genuinely appreciate the ambition, and I absolutely adore B-grade games and all their shortcomings).

So, there's that. If you love bad video games, I highly recommend buying this game. I will make another post with impressions when / if I get a few more hours in and notice this post is filled with Penn and Teller Bullshit. This paragraph is entirely serious, and I know it's probably not too relatable that someone would like bad games. Or, even, call a game like Risen 2 bad. But I do it in an endearing way, and I feel this game is worth my money more than some fuckin shit like Syndicate or Video Game Super Hero Post Call of Duty 4 experience. So, just letting you know, this post is more of a love letter to jank rather than a legitimate spiteful post. I don't do that.

Weren't all consumables grouped together in Risen 1? That's how it is for me right now.

The theme from Risen 1 sounds exactly like it as well, it's kinda amusing.

Should note I have never played Risen 1. It's not available for purchase in Australia because ????, and although that's never been much to stop me, I suspect I probably wouldn't be too into it anyway.

SO I AM A BAD POINT OF REFERENCE FOR THIS KINDA STUFF.

I figured as much reading your post. You should make an effort to get it at some point. The game is truly amazing.

I've kind of deduced that I shouldn't be playing this game as if it had a skill-based combat system. It seems a lot more like Two Worlds 2 where combat is basically just mashing attack and exploiting enemy pathing behaviours, where the actual emphasis is on grinding out sidequests and killing monsters to just outlevel the guys you're fighting.

I'm fine with that - it's a more traditional kind of RPG.

I found the "SAND" item. This is used as a "dirty" combat thing, where I guess these will be debuffs to enemies or other cooldown-like attacks. The sand "blinds" enemies, which on the training guy who I have been fighting for half an hour now with no progress, but has an interesting drawback. If you attack an enemy who is blinded, they instantly snap out of it and unleash a five hit combo on you. So, ironically, this debuff in turn makes enemies way more dangerous.

Tomorrow I will start playing this game like Two Worlds 2. Grinding out shitty fetchquests and monster hunts until I completely outlevel the main quest and get bored less than halfway into the game because I have removed any kind of challenge from the game.

I also suspect with the abundance of "rations", health regeneration items, that I should be using these during combat to give me an edge. But, also, I think I will sooner just try and use my sword for my edge. Because swords cut deeper than apples. But less than fear. Fear cuts the most. I wish I could scare my enemies.

Anyone who has the game playing with a controller? I'll be on the comfy-couch later, so I'm just curious how well the controller works with the game. Thanks.

Reading the impressions I think I'll pass too, at least until it's $10 or so. I've been trying to play Risen 1 and like every other time I try to play I get a couple hours in and just stop due to boredom. It's the definition of those janky euro RPGs people refer to.

If you're annoyed, as I was, by the slow mouse steering when looking up/down, do this:

1. Open C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Risen2\ConfigUser.xml with Notepad.
2. Change Mouse SensitivityY="1.000000" to larger than 1.

That is for Windows 7. You need to enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives" from Windows Explorer.

I ended up using a 2.500000 value. Mouse steering is now quick and snappy for every direction.

Which is really unfortunate because, while the first game had janky combat, too, it was all about timing attacks and dodges correctly. If you got good at the combat, you'd have a much easier time. There doesn't seem to much of that here since they removed dodge, and thus your only reliable way to avoid taking damage.

oh jesus thank you

I noticed that with my mouse running at 3000 DPI, the default sensitivity for horizontal movement was FUCKIN CRAZY but vertically it was just garbage. It's like they apply some crazy damping on vertical movement that isn't in effect on their horizontal axis or somethin'.

Kritz you are awesome

But also the worst person ever!

Are Risen 1 and 2 moddable at all? I was hoping the community could fix some of the dev's mess like with Gothic 3.

Anyway I guess this is proof that Piranha Bytes have serious QA issues on their own that had nothing to do with Jowood breathing down their necks or however people wanted to twist stuff back then when Gothic 3 came out.

If someone is able to find out how to drastically reduce the pop-in, I'd be very grateful.

Perhaps the trick is to copy certain parameters from

this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\risen 2\data\ini\ConfigDefault.xml

to this: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Risen2\Config\ConfigUser.xml

and experiment with the values.

ConfigUser.xml is the file to use if you want to apply settings. Editing ConfigDefault.xml does not have any effect.

There's a tweaking thread on the official forums with some settings to experiment with, don't know if they affect draw distance only or also the annoying pop-in.

oh did you guys notice every time you quicksave, it creates a new save file? With the amount of quicksaves I do, my harddrive is going to be full with Risen 2 saves. Unacceptable.

I'm glad I've waited as I really wanted to jump on this but couldn't see much value at the $50 price tag. I want so badly for this game to be good it just seems that the combat is a bit too wonky for my tastes. I was hoping for a Witcher 2 type of feel to the combat, but sadly that doesn't seem to be the case. Guess I'll have to wait a bit for hopefully updates and a cheaper price. Funny thing is, if this game was priced between $30-$35 at launch I would have probably picked it up. Im still enjoying the impressions though as I love the pirate theme in general.

I don't know how someone who *actually* made an attempt playing Risen could find it boring in any way.
It's pretty much as enjoyable as a modern RPG can go.

I agree. If the game is anything like the first (and I hear it's better) than this game is going to be a lot of fun.
Well, coming from the beta, I didn't like the new combat (but improves with the hours, the first impression is *really* bad) and how the landscape is fragmented in relatively small islands.... but beside that is the usual awesome Piranha Byte's formula: lots of unexpected depth, rewarding exploration, challenge, unique loot and so on...

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous. I've encountered a few games that treat quick saves like this. The developers don't seem to get it in. In a game that tells the player to save often on its loading screen, it's kind of unacceptable.

Do you ever get any kind of dodge move like in the original Risen? Right now it seems like close combat (especially with non-human opponents) consists of just mashing the attack button and hoping you somehow trump your enemy's animation priority.

Nope, no proper dodge, but controls were more tight in Risen 1, it was all about studying and exploiting enemies' attack patterns. It worked quite well, and it was challenging and rewarding.
In Risen 2 for what I've seen in the beta it feels more... Random. Controls are more unresponsive. I really don't like the change.

Just for the record, despise its flaws the beta still sold me the game. I was pretty involved by its end. I'm not just buying the game right now cause I really don't like what they are doing with day one DLCs.
I'm going to buy this for sure, but I'm going to look for some good offer somewhere or wait for Steam's June sales.

Too bad about no proper dodge move. I checked in the skill list and didn't see one listed, so I figured that might be the case. I totally agree with you about the responsiveness issue, too. I even booted up the original Risen last night just to confirm that I wasn't imagining things. The combat is definitely a lot more responsive.

Hopefully things will get a bit better when I learn how to kick (lol) and pick up a firearm. Right now I'm totally relying on Patty to pull aggro and just hitting things from behind. It seems like she's invincible? Either way, it feels like I'm totally exploiting and I can't say the combat is a lot of fun right now.

Also, does anyone know what's up with that DLC on the Steam front page? That all came with the game if you pre-ordered, right?

I don't know, we can only hope.
They changed the system entirely and went for a more Fable-like approach... And I fucking hate Fable, too.
Why they attempted to fix something that wasn't broken in the first place is beyond me, to be honest.

Dat console money...

You can tell the list-based menus were designed with consoles in mind, too.

Too bad the game is still janky as shit and won't sell much on the consoles. *sigh*

I hate it when game design gets compromised to try and "expand the audience" (assuming that was the case here).

Same.
As expected, the new combat is far less interesting than the combat in the first game. The game is also much easier than Risen 1. In the first game all enemies would kick your ass in the beginning but in Risen 2 there's very few enemies that can kick your ass (so far).
There also seems to be less choice and your actions seem to have no consequence.
I'm still enjoyng it though, even if it's not as good as the first game.
