So we're judging answers now?

Why do I have to question everything they do? If I questioned everything they did I'd never but their games. Is it suddenly wrong to be indifferent to their decisions? At the end of the day I don't really care what screen they go with as long as the games use them well i.e. not making the user switch constantly between stylus and buttons. What I do know is that I've yet to see a good argument as to why multitouch is so important that it causes people to cry out to the high heavens whenever it is not included.

I agree. I understand the need to question and examine what Nintendo does, but we really have no influence over what they are going to do and sometimes these "critiques" seem like thin veils to hide rehashed conversations that have already happened on this site and thread several times before. Like from the outside it seems this has devolved into another capacitive / resistative argument that doesn't really add much to the discussion. Everyone knows they are different and has an opinion on it, but it has 0 influence on what the WiiU will do or have.

Nintendo is always going to do what it wants. I've learned my lesson over the years, so it doesn't matter which one is "better". I don't care personally, I'm just curious to see what they'll do with it, regardless of if I have to use a finger or a stylus.

Multi-touch can always be used as an incremental step later when it becomes cheaper and the technology improves even more.

Actually, I think Sony/Microsoft may add a tablet controller too, especially Microsoft (but I have no idea). It's hard to know these things when you aren't an insider.
They will be stock with that decision for the next 5 years and have been using this type of interaction since 2004. Maybe they should have kept the device in the oven a bit more and expect the tech to mature? Basically we are getting the DS for the living room. Seems like they are not exactly braking new ground here.

In the even of Sony/MS opting for controllers equipped with sub screens, you expect them to go with resistive tech?

You are not indifferent to what screen they use, if it was the case we wouldn't be debating.

People question decisions that might limit the device potential, it's only natural. Nintendo has a record of strange design practices for their devices, that's something we all could agree on i think.

For example, for action games it is an ergonomic nightmare to me using the stylus to aim while holding the DS and push physical buttons with the other hand. For less demanding games, like Brain Training holding the device like a book and using the stylus was amazing.

I really don't know what to make of this Acid Ghost rumor. It's ridiculous; so ridiculous in fact that I don't know how someone could just make that up.
That's how I feel. Plus, it's oddly specific about where the advertising agency is located.
When I frist heard 'Acid Ghost' I thought of Ghost Recon, Metal Gear Acid and Starcraft Ghost and accepted it as a fairly standard name for an action game, but now every time it's repeated it seems to grow in absurdity. Thanks to this thread, all I can think of is a ghost on drugs.
agree... sounds silly, not to mention the fact that the URL acidghost.com is available. I think they would have locked that up. ;)
Just like WiiU.com, right?

Taken out of context it sounds odd, but so would many game titles. I'm intrigued to see if this is true and exactly what it is at E3. If its a new "mature" IP from Retro akin to Splinter Cell/Metal Gear Solid it could be fantastic, we'll see :)

Thinking about all the FPS that are surely to arrive early and often on Wii U and how Iwata has long opined about lack of western mega hits on Nintendo consoles.

I'd find it amusing if deep in the IP Vault in Kyoto, Nintendo has been sitting on a genre-breaking FPS prototype that they just didn't think fit the Wii market. And now that they've returned to a focus on core gamers, they're ready to bring it to Wii U.

Hey it's an important news but not a "it deserves its own countdown" news :p
btw i'm not sure to create a thread for the two infos that i think worth it, because the person able to further legitimate my info can't do it (basically, he wasn't able to check the data that i relayed to him) since a few weeks now. I don't know, if a confirmed by a mod (and i'll ask them) Wii U developer, that hide/lurk in this thread, could contact me, i won't repeat it here. I need to have more ammunitions to defend the content in these threads directly in the first message, to avoid 567 "who is he" "how can we believe him ?", etc.
Otherwise i'll just write the messages here.

btw: 20 days till the E3: switch to frenzy mode

I'd personally prefer it hanging around in here. I sort of like the weird frenzy that occurs whenever something like that is posted. It's like that episode of Star Trek when they come across that planet of people who are generally pretty docile and inexpressive but have one hour in a day where they suddenly act with wild, destructive, orgigal abandon.

How is idea man still a junior?

Gonna guess he was juniored after hand, but if that's the case, dunno if he can ever recover member status.

You do know that he hasn't been here three months yet, right?

I hope Nintendo announces that they have added multi-touch capabilities to the tablet at E3. This is about the only thing I believe Nintendo's new console is missing.

I agree totally, so long as they don't sacrifice any advantages of their current screen by making it capacitive.

The term could just be a code name, you know. Like I said, it's a anagrammatical code for "Hi cat dogs". Eminem is obviously going to be pimping "Nintendogs & Cats Return"

or this could be all bullshit; it's not like our friendly, furry-faced friend said that it's an actual confirmed fact

I predict that this thread will reach its end by the 20th or the 25th and a sixth thread will be created which will also reach its maximum by June 5th.

I'm really, really hoping that it's pretty much done on the night of the 23rd or the mid-morning of the 24th at latest, because I need to do something cool and there's tight timing involved. edit: But the thread's average performance level would have to be bumped up for that to happen.

Reading the Ubisoft summary again, I had a thought.

What if the Wii U's parity with the next gen machines from an online and services standpoint will prove more important than from a graphical standpoint?

What decisions are Nintendo making today that will bind them in the next few years for things we haven't yet conceived of?

How do you expect party in this regard from Nintendo when they have neglected that aspect of gaming in every cycle so far in relation to the competition? It's just not a realistic expectation.

Parity in terms of online services is not achieved from night to day. In contrast to something like hardware specs, it takes quite a lot of time and investment.

That would make sense. Graphical superiority almost never decides the winner of a generation. Hell, it's seldom even a boon. But building a community most certainly does seem to have helped Microsoft.

I think if they go full bore with the inter-system communication at a user level, then Nintendo could grab a lot of interest from potential buyers. Video conferencing, streaming games from your TV to their DRC (as Tom has occasionally mentioned), effortlessly passing along content (multiplayer invites, digital download vouchers, photo sets, et al) to your friends*, adding permanent mustaches to the video feed of the person you're chatting with, and so forth. As long as they make it so mindbogglingly easy that you never have to think about words like "driver" or "settings", it's the sort of thing that could catch fire.

*edit: while in the aforementioned video chat especially, I meant

Sony did it from an even worse position in 2 or 3 years... I think the experiments on the Wii DS and 3DS should bring them a lot closer then you think... Infact just having all retail titles available digitally day one is a huge change to their philosophy... Just give us voice chat on the os separate from games and give each user an account not tied to the system and they are basically there considering what they have accomplished on the 3DS

Did Nintendo clarify about the digital retail titles? I know they said something along the lines of "We will offer digital versions of our games", but did they say that this will apply to every game? And have they confirmed how they'd handle third party games (whether they have a choice in the matter, and so on)?

Not really too optimistic about third party support for the Wii U.

Sure, you may say "NDAs!" but some games for WiiU have been announced already without much ceremony.

We will get a couple of surprises at E3, but I am gonna guess that third party support will be slim at first.

I think the opposite. My doubts are with the long term. I'm sure Nintendo will go all out to try and get as much support and commitment early on, but sustaining it a whole generation? That's another story.

We already knew about Assassines Creed since last E3 and Rayman was a leak. What else was there?

I didn't say I expected them to, but that it could be really important how close they can get to it. I guess the good news is that some of that can evolve over time with system updates, etc., but it would seem that all of the core decisions need to be right to do it.

Also, I do think 3DS has at least been encouraging in that respect.

I have said a few times that getting users to move out of their console community (XBL) is the biggest hurdle to change user habits and preferences.

Sony brings out a trailer for Last of Us... when they could have waited for E3. Why?
Is it because of the rumor of an adult game for the WiiU called Acid Ghost?
A game I would buy for the name alone.

And if this game does exists and it will feature Eminem, Nintendo is putting some serious dough down for this production. This must be a Retro title, or somebody pretty big, A class, teaming up with Nintendo. That Nintendo really trusts (ex Retro developers?).

Disaster, Project Hammer, were marketed as a mature titles for the Wii.
They had serious development issues and the Wii ended up being more casual oriented than a balanced system because they missed out on these titles. Monolith recovered with Xenoblade, a little too late for the Wii, and the guys behind Project Hammer, fell apart.

I don't think indie games count. Rayman: Legends was a total screwup on Ubisofts part as well as the Avengers game (they really should hire some proofreaders). Who knows what the situation with Ben 10 was, but it's really a non-issue. Any game of any real significance has not been announced on purpose. Don't expect anything like that until at least a couple of days before the show when it become difficult to hide things on the show floor or when press releases start going out to news groups. If the first day of the show doesn't net anything, then it's time to worry. Right now it's too early to know one way or another.

But that's not parity. It's an improvement. I didn't say otherwise.

Why do you consider Sony was in a worst position than Nintendo at some stage?

So far they don't even have a solid storage strategy in to place for the WiiU, that's related to the Digital sales matter.

Avengers: Battle for Earth and the next Ben 10 game were announced for Wii U in press releases within the past week and a half. NDAs have been more or less confirmed (see: Sumo Digital's comments on a possible Wii U version of Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed), but there seems to be little rhyme or reason to them.

nintendo wins if true, doubt it will happen though.

Nintendo has to keep the retailers happy, especially if they are going to offer downloadable titles. But that usually means the prices would be a notch higher for retailers to keep more money in their pockets. Maybe Nintendo is going to eat a lot of costs for retail knowing they will be making their money with their online store?

Couple of downloadable games, that PC racing game. Other stuff.

I find the indie games weird, cause you'd think it'd be easier to force an indie dev to sign a NDA.

I think the NDAs are really for big titles, titles that are also making use of the controller in ways we really dont know about yet (Though Ubisoft let one of the cats out of the bag). Or titles that Nintendo will help publish at least for the first year to get things rolling.

So I see, nothing groundbreaking new about WiiU...
I wish all of you a wonderful long weekend.
Hopefully on monday if I'm back NintendoGAF has not crashed about the good news
See ya then

What do you mean they don't have a solid storage strategy?
So far, pending to change. We won't have a hard disk included in the console and that's expected due cost issues. However, the machine doesn't feature high speeds ports for a Hard Disk.

The Hard Disk is not only useful for storage reasons for the normal console release that's many Gigabytes in size but is also useful for developers and games functionality. In those 2 last terms a fast enough connection to the drive is necessary.

Nintendo should offer a Hard Disk day one and encourage developers to take advantage of it when it's present in the machine,

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Good point made in the other thead.
Pre-order the Amazon games now to lock in the $50 price, in case they go up.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
You are not indifferent to what screen they use, if it was the case we wouldn't be debating.
I'm just addressing points people bring up. At the end of the day I'm not going to lose sleep over Nintendo's screen choice.

Amazon lists Wii U games for $49.99
Well the new generation of handhelds didn't prevent retailers in the UK knocking down prices to I'm not to concerned about game prices at the moment, but it is nice to know I probably won't be spend much more day one as I am now.

I think this is a case of waiting for NSMB3DS to see how they handle things.
