Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

If they still offer that $25 google play credit by the time i can get a 8GB system without paying shipping and from a place with a good return policy ( Best Buy, Staples), i think i'm in. As much as i question if 5.6GB of usable space is enough, i don't want to spend the extra $50. I figure 1GB for apps, 1GB for music if necessary ( mostly stream), and 3 GB for comics from comixology/marvel app with not downloading every book i buy at the same time.

edit: 5.92GB of storage space actually, that's 300MB of more comics :O

Keep in mind you can always use DropBox, etc. for your storage needs, as long as you have wi-fi to use.

Honestly though, if you're planning on loading a lot of content, 16GB is the way to go.

Yeah the only reason I went with 8 is I store things on my PC and and put them on a tablet on a need-to-use basis. As well my google drive and dropbox accounts for all other stuff. If you're gonna DL a lot and store it all on the tablet, get a 16.

Just don't get it from google, fucking panhandling thieves.

Quick advice. This or a 32gb HP touch pad with ICS?(it would cost me $150 hpt)

Mom wants a tablet, which is recommended for her? Thanx.

N7. In the end it'll probably be easier for her to use and will be less likely to give her trouble (or if it does, it'll be more likely she'll be able to get support for it) than a modified HP touchpad.

Gotta say after owning the Nexus 7 since Friday, I love it. I haven't touched either my Xoom or Thrive, not even my Galaxy Nexus, well except for calls. Google has it spot on. Sure i miss the expandable storage but between mapping drives using File Manager, Dropbox and Google drive, it's not really a huge issue.

Also for those who purchased the Moko Case for the Nexus 7 from Amazon, check your email. They're given us a free replacement, the new case will include the wake/sleep function. This is the email they just sent me;

OK any particular reasons? Thing that interest is that the 32GB HPT I can get for $150(from local guy).
pretty much everyone agrees it's the best android tablet ever made, so for the extra dollars, it's worth it. Your mom might appreciate the lightness and all that as well. Specs and all that should future proof it for sure for quite some time.

as someone who has a touchpad with ICS and wants a nexus 7, i'd say nexus 7. Touchpad is heavy and has poor build quality. Maybe the deciding factor is your mother's vision, if the 9.7'' screen will be easier for her to read, but it's a beast.

Posting from my Nexus 7, just wanted to say AHHHH!

When the package arrived from Staples it felt so light. I thought I was gonna be disappointed when I opened it. Here I am typing from it! Time to play with it more. :)

So I found these instructions for rooting the n7 here. Do I need to be on stock 4.1 to use the one click program? I just updated to 4.1.1 after the tablet prompted that an update was available
I dont see a need to root at the moment, and this is coming from a guy who rooted his GN within 10 mins of getting it. There is just nothing to root for right now. No roms really or kernels.

Would I be able to stream media from my network? also, is the £15 free credit pre-order only, or would I still get it if I order at the end of August?

Yes. There are a variety of ways to do it. You could it through a media library system like XBMC or Plex. There are DLNA server apps, or you could even use a file manager that will connect to your local network and just play them over the network like you would between two PC's.

tbh I only unlocked and rooted to toggle off the nav bar and use quick pie system button controls instead, plus it's nice imo to use the full screen that I'd paid for resolution and all 1280x800

unlocked and rooted my gnex the second I got it to remove that nav bar.

This unless she really wants the extra 2 inches. I would never give someone a customized ROM if they're not prepared to use one (however CM7 was a lot more headache-inducing than CM9 is now).

Finally unbanned.

For canadians looking for the Nexus 7 I suggest checking out NCIX stores, I got mine last friday (the last one they had) at the Mississauga location. I spoke to Google on the phone, even though my order is processed and they can't cancel it, they said that if I refuse delivery at the door that I will be completely refunded the full amount including delivery charges.

Hope that helps.

The Nexus 7 is pretty amazing by the way, the build quality, weight, performance are all top notch.

I got mine from the exact same store a day after. I guess they got more shipments somehow on the weekend.

I found Pyro's G+ page:

Google have done a phenomenal job at alienating a large proportion of their early adopter market by turning the product release of the Google Nexus 7 Tablet into a customer service fiasco. Here's how you can do the same thing when you launch your next technology 'must have':

1) Launch an exciting product, at a great price, and encourage pre-orders from your key audience (keep the launch date vague for no good reason except to increase your risk of retailer premature despatchulation)

2) Add uncompetitive postage and packing charges to the pre-order, it's a captive market, and you've got to make those profits back somewhere, right?

3) This is the most important one, under no circumstances keep your rabidly fanatic pre-paying customers updated. Say nothing, nada, zip. That way they can spend all their time looking up rumours and talking about you behind your corporate back.

4) In case they contact you directly with queries, ignore them completely where possible, i.e. never return contact form or email requests for updates, and where they are inconsiderate enough to telephone you, fob them off with inconsistent information.

5) If order cancellations are requested simply refuse them because 'things are in progress' and inform customers to return the package, incurring possible restocking charges and several weeks delay of refunds.

6) Ship to retailers and allow them to sell to the public BEFORE your pre-orders are even dispatched. Bundle the exact same bonuses with retail sales that your pre-order customers had believed were an incentive to them, and had figured helped offset the ludicrous postage charges. Let a few faithful 'fandroids' defend you but avoid any acknowledgement that there is even a problem, let alone the majority of your early adopters swearing never to buy hardware directly from you again.

7) Spend 20 seconds coming up with a rhyming announcement that shipping has begun. Post to Twitter, do NOT communicate directly with your paying customers, and ignore the baying crowd, they'll shut up and forgive you once they have their shiny new toy, won't they! Won't they?

I'm basically just resposting shit from the slickdeals thread, but it seems J&R is either getting a shipment of 1,500 or 18 units this week.

Got mine and was a little disappointed to see that it didn't download all my apps that I had on my galaxy nexus, is there some way to force it ?

Not that I know of. Quickest way to do it now would be to go the list of apps on your Galaxy Nexus on the Play Store website and install them that way. At least then you won't have to click through 2 different screens on the tablet to download each of them.

well, staples box was there when I got home. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to my gadgets, though, so within the first few minutes I noticed two fairly big flaws:

1) with all the reviews saying this was sturdily built, I expected something close to my ipad, which is solid like a rock. well, it's not. even light grabs at certain spots will make it creak. and when I press along the edges, the screen distorts. is this common?

2) ~10 pixel long vertical scratch easily visible on any light background

I probably could've lived with 1, but 2's a deal breaker. wonder how long it's going to take to get an exchange... at least it's from staples, which should be easier than most places considering I can drive to one

the screen is really nice otherwise, and I'm enjoying fumbling around all these android apps for the first time. widgets are cool

edit: fuck me, staples stores won't have any until at least the 20th
