A bunch of these are not stupid, if a character practices Drunken Kung-Fu or Prying mantis, then thats what those stances look like ... oh and Sumo wrestling, duh

Lol at how serious most of the character's defense is with the stances being posted in this thread. Guard? What guard? Completely chilling is the new defense.
These animated stances are more awesome than they do suck. the sprite work and animation is great!

Oh the animation is definitely great and so are most of the animations and poses I posted. Especially taking into account that they fit the personalities and backstories of their characters...they're just completely STUPID to use as a stance in a fight. No guard what so ever lol.

Honestly though, it is a bit amusing in a dismal way how many people in this thread do not know how some of their "stupid" stances are actually classic martial arts forms like Lion and many others.

But yeah Duo Lon moves are about his stretchy limbs so SNK made a really weird stance... which i friggin' love.

I respect SF2 and all but Chun-Li just looks really awkward in it, especially in walking stance.
Chun Li's stance looks at least like it has a defensive martial arts stance compared to so many of the anime looking characters who seem to have less actual fighting stances and simply idle animations. She has one fist drawn back and the other forward, while having one leg forward than the other, allowing more weight to be placed on the back leg, making it easier to kick with the front leg. Looks a little bit like a Wing Chun stance.

Apparently, to a lot of people in this thread, any stance that is not someone standing perfectly still, or all balled up like some beta nerd about to get his ass whipped by a senior bully=stupid
Fun note, if you press two buttons when you activate a super (usually it's 1 button), Oro will use a "better" version of that super where he uses both arms. Screenshot from his super II.

For all its flaws, I think this sprite actually gets quite a bit right. Specifically the inactive hand draped in the back, heels meeting at a 90 degree angle, and the bend at the knees make it look like they were at least trying to emulate a real fencer.

What always gets me about that sprite is that Ryu's stance in the original Street Fighter was plainer (I want to say 'more orthodox' but, y'know, fictional martial arts and all that):
Then SFII rolls around and BAM:
His knees just jut out at a sharp and painful looking angle. The perspective is just wonky, I know, but it still looks goofy to me.
Capcom tweaked the knees in the Alpha and SFIII series, but the SFII stance is so iconic that it pops up in later games with better sprites and animation as a throwback.
But I think that this is the most stupid stance Ryu's ever had:
