Hideki Kamiya on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: "It's just a ripoff."

What if Sony Battle Royale is targeting competitive fighting game players and care about competitive play? I mean SSBB kind of said "hey fuck your competitive play, here is tripping". While Sony was at EVO and emphasized competitive play.

That to me says they are branching out for two different demographics

Sony went even further and brought in some established and known FGC veterans to help with the game. I really wish that happened in more genres, especially shooters.

But PS-All Stars is not an evolution of the mascot fighter game.

Use your meme.

Yes, but if PS All-Stars = SSB then DMC = Bayonetta easily. I don't support either notion, personally.

He is saying that Sony is ripping something off of Nintendo. Your Bayonetta and DMC comparison breaks because they were made by the same person. You really couldn't use the term "rip-off" to describe what went down there.

That was the entire point. Judging by the looks of it. He said in twitter he has no interest on playing it. So he's judging by looks.

Dude come on, you just need to see the first video they released to notice the game is trying to take advantage of the popularity of Smash, Kamiya seems to heavily dislikes games that are made with this mindset, so because it goes against his ideals he is not going to play it. Makes sense, right?

A terrible evolution! I mean I still gotta give Bayonetta a "fair" try but from me super easy mode playthrough I hated it. Yet I love DMC super easy playthroughs -_-?

DMC1 and Bayonetta are both designed around playing at the highest difficulty, not the lowest (where the game plays the game for you essentially).

Not necessarily - the point of contest on that post was 'who made what', something which is already visible. That's not the same case on his comment on Sony All Stars.

So because I have played a beat em up with a female protagonist like heavenly sword i have the right to judge bayonetta by looks alone?

Why not indeed, but why buy it when the original is already out and arguably better or identical? This game is only of interest to Playstation 3 only owners that wish they could play something like SSB but don't want to invest in a Nintendo console for just one game. And that's fine. It's still a rip-off though :p

Because it could be more enjoyable to them than SSB, they could enjoy the mechanics more, they could have more of an attachment to PS characters than Nintendo characters and that adds tot he enjoyment. I invest in every Nintendo (home) console eventually and get SSB but am still interested in this game.

You're making pretty broad statements here.

No he isn't.

Speaking of misinformed people...

...

Seriously? I know he isn't. What didn't come across in my post? I said people are misinformed in this thread, dude quotes me and tells me to stop being witty. I tell him that Kamiya is making Rising and I'm being witty.

EXACTLY. Its very obvious that Sony's mascot fighter is for competitive fighters, and aimed to be balance for competitive play.

Nintendo's has gone on record apparently to say they don't want their game to be a competitive fighter and even went out of their way to make sure it wasn't competitive with introduction of certain game mechanics.

Street Fighter x Tekken emphasized competitive play too...................................

I think one of the guys who sold us that game is working on All Stars as well so...

Guess smash bros invented party brawlers and NO ONE ELSE CAN EVER EVER EVER MAKE ONE OR ELSE THEY ARE RIPPING THEM OFF

I expected better from Kamiya.

Wrong. I like Brawl but would also like a game with functioning online, a combo system, and that isn't floaty. The games also play quite differently and the tactics employed in each are very different.

So you're saying it's not a clone?

I'm saying it has the same angle of fighting, and pretty much a very similar interface, and the fact it's a mascot fighter.

But are Street Fighter, Tekken, King of fighters and a long etcetera clones of eachother?

Same angle, similar interface, expert fighters.

This is bullshit and you know it. I know plenty of people, myself included, who own a Wii, brawl, and melee that are picking up this game. We do so because we are fans of the mascot fighter genre and we are fans of many of these Playstation franchises.

Well, it's not that he said that, just that he had no interest in playing the game and he sees it as a rip-off which clashes with his morals as a developer..... It's just his opinion...

Come on, doing your take on the genre (in this case, already a subgenre) is fine, but you can't deny the garing similarities.

Only things I have against PSASBR are that many of the characters are downright unmemorable, or not universally known, and that you can only kill people via supers. What? You make the whole match centered around that? I don't like that.

People have their opinions, so whatever.

I get the impression that no-one would be laughing at Kamiya's tweets if he didn't make their favorite game. As someone who barely knows or cares who he is, he sounds like a dickhead.

He is kinda right though.

SFxT emphasized heavily on casual play and getting new people to play the game due to how accessible it was with gems, easy inputs and easy combos.

If you're referring to Seth Killian you can bet all the money in the world that he was against gems and was paid to basically PR. Why do you think he left? Seth is one of the more hardcore competitive players with a hardcore mindset.

Alright.

This thread is glorious. The game is obviously taking inspiration from Smash Bros. But it playing much differently and I recommend everyone to at least it if a shot. I would also like to say that saying that Coles Supers is a direct copy of Snakes Super and that FP is a direct copy paste of Peach is absolutely fucking retarded. And anyone who get enraged by that should go get enraged by every single fighting game in existence.

It's not the same game, it's an evolution of the formula that he created.

Use your brain. (alternatively you can actually play the games in question)

Bayonetta & DMC are closer in mechanics than PASBR and Smash. You're giving one a pass because of "evolution" while condemning another based on visuals. Him making DMC doesn't make his comments on creativity any less silly.

This is mostly a rehash of the hubbub from PASBR reveal. Some developer saying it over twitter doesn't make it any more legitimate now.

And the whole scenario is funny, because the fans have been asking sony for a mascot fighter for very long.

What do you want, an ergheiz flop? To make it have a classic fighter style? Is the genre now exclusive to nintendo because they made the first one?

hmm gotta disagree. I love me some smash bros but this game does look fun.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

He is kinda right though.

The thing is, Kamiya has directed some hugely important games over the years, so regardless of how he might come off to an outside observer, he's certainly not talking out of his ass.

Oh, and I don't think Kamiya had anything to do with Red Hot Rumble, the Smash Bros. rip off some people brought up.

what the hell man. Playing either game on super easy "automatic" mode isn't a fair try at all. You need to play at least on hard
I tried both DMC & DMC3 on normal initially but I could never progress very far so trying on hard is way not an option! Being overpowered by using weaker difficulty levels can be fun, an even then I still have a buncha deaths. Plus DMC's style & characters was appealing to me. Bayonetta otoh is repulsive but its gameplay will get a second chance!

I used the word "franchise" to illustrate the fact that these characters aren't just from one-off games, but actually feature in multiple games and hence have been around for quite a while.

But if you really want to know!...

Big Daddy - Bioshock
Cole MacGrath - inFamous
Colonel Radec - Killzone

Ahh yeah they're all current gen stuff to. Two of 'em are shooters so of course I'd know nothing about 'em, and inFamous I gots from the PSN hack but still never played.

Maybe you should play on something other than Nintendo consoles.
That don't make any sense since this generation I have a PS3, DS, and PSP! So I oughta know more about Sony stuff by default, unless they make stuff that doesn't appeal to me. Which seems to be the case here!

DMC1 and Bayonetta are both designed around playing at the highest difficulty, not the lowest (where the game plays the game for you essentially).
And Smash is meant to be played with no items and junk right? Anyone can find fun & enjoyment in a game however they want! By playing 'em both at the same difficulty level its still a fair comparison if ya ask me.

The game doesn't look like it plays like brawl. I like fighters and the only reason I wrote off brawl is because it was centered around ring outs. I wouldn't like any fighter that is centered around ring outs. That is a unique and defining feature of SSB. If Sony had followed suite not only would it have been agreed it was a knock of but a gamer such myself wouldn't give it the time of day.

Just owning a console doesn't make you a fan, and seeing you are on a forum of this size and have not heard about those franchises or the characters in em, simply seems suspect.

well if that's the case then i do agree with you.
most dont really know shit, beause games are not worth taking seriously and therefore not worth researching... or something..
gaf said so and they are always right. no exception......
unless you meant misinformed about playstation all-stars, because it is a rip-off concept, whether someonelikes it or not.
it's not even about subjectivity.

Is a valid responsa that "Is his opinion"?

I mean, I still love his games and listen his point of view but I can also be annoyed with a opinion not that I only disagree but I think is kind of insulting to the actual developers of the game.

It's fine how you want to play it, it's just an FYI that both games are designed (weapons, styles, AIs) with the hardest difficulty in mind. It's like a whole separate game. But that can be off-putting to some people, that's why I said "at least hard". Essentially all the playthroughs before Dante Must Die/Climax mode are building up to the challenge
