4K Support : could it have a influence on which Next Gen Console you buy?

Not really. I just bought a new 1080P LED last year, so I'm not in any rush to join the 4K market.

If I get a 4k TV, it'll be to play my PC games on such a large screen at a delicious resolution. However, if there was a console id buy due to 4k support it would obviously be ps4

4K video output support feels rather irrelevant to me when it is likely almost all the games will output in 720p/30fps to actually get the most they can out of the hardware.

Yeah it would be the most insane amount of wasted money that could happen in video games, even more than 3D. We can't even get most devs to shoot for 1080 because they want more particles and textures.

I imagine the reason it has it is because AMD's 7000 series supports 4K, so the feature exists even if no one uses it.

4K is a consideration for my next TV, but even if I wait until E3 for Sony or Microsoft to announce 4K support, that really doesn't mean much. Current games don't even reach 1080p on consoles, hell some don't hit 720p, so I'm not going to let 4K influence my decision from that perspective.

It might be relevant for Bluray playback eventually, but by the time there's a decent number of Bluray discs supporting 4K, the artificial inflation put on the 4K compatible Bluray players will have decreased dramatically.

Yeaahhhh I'm not going to be caring about 4K for quite some time.

Yes. The next wave of next gen consoles are probably expected to be around until 2018/2019.

By then I definitely see myself jumping to either a 100+ inch screen or front projection. So 4K support is a must have. And not just for games but media as well.

Come on Sony... 4K 3D at 60 frames per second (games and movies, yes I'm dreaming).

4K wont launch with any console, maybe they will release a firmware upgrade 4 years into their lifes that will add support for it for menus and for 2D "arcade" games if they want to.

But it wont be widely used for every game.

I imagine the reason it has it is because AMD's 7000 series supports 4K, so the feature exists even if no one uses it.

That's because it is powerful enough to handle it. Last gen we got support of 1080p, barely any games used it because it would require sacrifices in other areas, thus 720p or sub was used. Now we will be getting consoles that support 4k, and the same problem will exist as before except now games will be able to move to 1080p because there is so much more overhead power. So again everyone should hope we get a system powerful enough to support 4K, as it would mean more games at 1080p.-

No. I really think 4K will be a much bigger bomb than 3DTV. Nobody will care.

No. It's unlikely that games will actually run at that resolution, many games this generation are far below 720p. Plus I don't think I'll be buying a 4k TV anytime soon. I love the idea of a 4K monitor, but I don't think it would make that much of a difference from across the room.

No. I think the market for 4K TV's will be very niche. Until broadcasters make plans to provide content and start delivering 4K content no one outside of videophiles will bother with 4K tvs. IMO, 4K bluray isn't compelling reason to upgrade for the general public.

Wait, are there rumors of the next gen systems supporting 4K? That seems...kinda crazy. I mean, I'm certainly no tech expert, but going from inconsistent performance at 720p to 4K seems like an insane jump.

Something something Sony is giving you something you didn't know you want. Its their moto. It has worked on me a few times.

4k is pretty low on the list of deciding factors if we get another 'HD twins' type situation again, as it will probably only be used for video content.

Also,
Which developer will be the first to make a game without a proper scaling UI, resulting in a terrible experience on 1080p displays.
Or do you think that won't happen this time around?

The only implementation that 4k will have on next gen consoles will be video playback and the System UI. Even downloadable game would have trouble reaching that kind of resolution at a playable framerate.

I really don't think enough people are eager to buy 80" TVs or to sit ridiculously close to 50" TVs. I could see it working for computer monitors, but not in the average living room.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
4K TVs will be just as successful as SACD.

You'd have to have a pretty huge screen for 4k to make any difference from 6-8 feet away. The only use I can think of is for side by side stereo 3d rendering like in the Oculus Rift.

I really need to find threads made prior to the launch of Ps360 and the Wii. I could have swore people were claiming anything over 480p is worthless and wouldn't matter to them. Especially Nintendo fans.

For now I don't care much about 1080p on consoles (my TV is 720p only), let alone this 4K pie-in-the-sky crap.

Give me 720p @ 60 FPS and I'll say "fair enough".
We'll be lucky to get a stable 30 FPS.

No. Maybe I'll change my mind if I ever see a major 4K console game, but I highly doubt we'll get more than 1080p and then a revert to subHD as the generation continues once again.

There seems to be some confusion over 4K output support, which is highly debatable if 4K will ever be successful, and a GPU that has the power to generate 4K. 4K output is a cheap support and won't really affect the price of the console, however, a GPU powerful enough to generate 4K would. However, a GPU of that caliber would also be able to handle higher frame rate, particles, textures, and so on and so on at a lower resolution like say 1080p. Something everyone in this thread so far says they want.

So yes, we should all want a console with a GPU powerful enough to handle 4K if we want more games at 1080p and a solid frame rate. Gaming PCs already support this, and we should also expect the next Xbox and Playstation to be able to do this as well.

Since there seems to be some misconceptions on the subject:

Which won't happen for decades.

Absolutely not for your previously (and obvious) stated facts on the cost of those TVs.

Also, I don't know a person who cares about 720p and 1080p. If it were not listed on a spec sheet or box, you wouldn't know the god damn difference.

If a videogame aims to do a subpar 4k at 30fps, it probably means it can do a decent to good 1080p at 60fps.

So, yes it would.

i think you are being overly optimistic if you think that games will be able to run at 30fps on a 4k resolution.

4k is going to be strictly for media consumption (ie: movies).
