It's very easy and cheap to buy aftermarket front and rear plates for the 4/4S. Some of them look really good too.

Any word yet if AT&T will use the move to 4G as an excuse to end all the grandfathered unlimited plans? I assume they will, which makes it really hard to upgrade. Getting a big boost in speed is somewhat worthless if I suddenly have to hawkishly watch my data use.

I'm with you on the fact that I never buy cases for my phones or other portables. My friend has an iPhone 4 and he has covered it up in thick rubber. Yeah, it's protection but if I'm gonna hate it as a result, it's not worth it.

Guess I'll regret it on one bad day, but eh.

I think it's generally expected to end the grandfathered plans. I kind of assumed so as well, so I didn't feel so bad about activating tethering this summer and losing mine. I'd lose it with 4G anyway.

I have until oct 1 to send my 4S (16gb) to Gazelle, I have the box sitting here. They'll give me 280 but I'm tempted to get an easy extra $100 if it's that easy to sell.

Edit: if 350 is a reasonable selling price I'll probably just gazelle it

I'm in the same boat with my 4 32gb. But I can't sell my phone until I get the new one, so I'm probably sticking with Gazelle.

Gazelle had a deal where you could wait until you get the new one to send it, and they guarantee the price until Oct 1.

Edit: might've misinterpreted your post

A case is a must. Right now I have a Speck Pixelskin HD and it's brilliant. Small and protective.

You could also get a quote from Gazelle now, buy the new one, then put up the old one on eBay/Craigslist/Kijiji until you get a good offer or the deadline for mailing to Gazelle comes up...

Still the perfect device. Only thing they could do to make these better is add more gigs.
Yeah, that was when they nailed the Nano to the point where they kept it around for two years iirc. I would definitely prefer something like this;

oppose to something like

Blah. Cases are not a must. I rock no case, never have and never broken an iPhone yet.

I find people are less careful with cases and tend to break their iPhones. Where like myself, people whom I know without cases treat the device a little better. To each his own though.

I try to be very careful and am. However I've dropped and bumped my phone several times and I'm sure the case has helped a lot. Plus there are no scratches on the back which is nice.

Cases are the bane Apple's beautiful designs. When it's really necessary I use an Incipio Featherlight which is insanely thin, clear, and nearly invisible.

I certainly hope not.

Cases definitely aren't necessary. All depends on how you take care of your shit. For people who have used their case on their 4/4S, just take it off right now and remind yourself how ridiculously high quality feeling and slick the phone is. I bet you forgot.

If you change anything about your plan/package now you lose it; I can't imagine being able to choose a new 4G plan and keeping it.

That is one reason I like having a case. The iPhone 4 is a sexy beast, but way too slick to hold onto most of the time. The case at least adds a little bit of grip without adding much size to it.

well I didn't literally mean slick, lol. I mean't SLICK KNAMEAN.

I think the new backs will make it even more no-case friendly, which I'm glad about.

As of now you can continue to keep your plans, even unlimited. As well as keep single user plans. Family share are not forced like verizon. For now anyway.

I've got a great glass and aluminium case for my iPhone. Looks and feels really nice.

Lemme see? I've never seen that before.

Ya, I'm always impressed when I take it out of its case. It is so nice. But, I'm honestly scared of damaging it.

But anyway, its bare-bones minimalist design lends itself to being put in a case. As Apple only offers one model, this allows people to differentiate their phones from each other.

I think it will be like your mockup here, but with a flat front not curved. I don't see the front being all glass. Probably get an aluminum home button to match the body color

The first gen Nano is still the hottest looking. So damn clean. Turned heads when it came out, and nobody had any trouble forgetting about the iPod Mini's existence.

Yeah, my phone is naked, and eve though the back is unibody metallic, I would still want colors for the front.

I don't think they'll be doing so. I'm on an LTE capable "unlimited" plan, all I needed was a new SIM card. I swapped it back and forth between my Lumia and 4S. No problems there.

And naked phones the only way to go. Yeah I probably could've sold my 4S for $500 if it was in a case. But that'd be a year of agony of covering up such a beautiful design. I like my phones how I like my women, naked.

I use a leather SENA ultraslim sleeve for my iPhone and iPad. It does a great job of protecting the phone from scratches and small drops when not in use. I hate cases that cover up a beautiful design, but I don't want my phone scratched to hell when it's in my pocket either so a sleeve solves both problems. It's also super slick looking to boot.

Only downside is the leather takes a week or so to break in and it's easy to lose.

This is the case I have for my 3GS:

l_hoXU.jpg

I was so scared when getting my first smartphone, I thought I needed to maximize in protection. Still using it to this day, it's as tough and inconvenient as it looks. Well convenient enough that I can throw my phone anywhere and nothing will happen to it.

Next time I'll definitely go for something more discrete.

I know I'm going to want the new iphone, mostly for the bigger screen, but I think I'm going to hold off this time to save money.

My contract with AT&T is almost up and I can drop them and use my 4S on Straight Talk with the same reception and unlimited everything and nearly cut my monthly bill in half.

So I am probably going to do that and wait until Straight Talk will support the new iPhone, which I'm guessing is just a case of them getting the new mico-sim card, and at that point look at trying to sell my 4S and get the new iPhone. Thankfully iPhones hold their value pretty well so after selling the 4S I shouldn't have to spend to much out of pocket to get the new iPhone, and be done with contract bs for good.

My only concern is if LTE would be supported on Straight Talk, but for $45/month I can probably live with out it especially since almost everywhere I go has wi-fi

They can't just "take it away" from you. You have to do something that breaks the terms of the contract or causes a change in the terms such that a new contract results.

It's got a hard outside, and a rubber inside to absorb shock. Adds a nice splash of colour.

What is wrong with you two. ;_;

I've never dropped my i-anything, thankfully. Naked ftw. All I worry about is putting my phone down on a more rugged surface and getting the glass or aluminum scratched, so I occasionally put on a clear back snap.

One of the features that I'm jealous the most about in the new Kindle Fires (and granted, they are tablets, not cell phones), that I really wish will make it into the iPhone 5 is the dual antenna 802.11n antenna array. It's rumored the new iPhone will at least also be dual band, which will help somewhat with n speeds, but I would really love to see a 2x2 antenna design that took better advantage of most better routers out there these days. I know (along with the CPU), my iPhone 4 can only hit about 12-14Mbps down, when my router is capable of doing the full 50Mbps of my ISP to my laptop.

Why would you ever need 50mbps on your phone?

It's not like you're streaming 1080p movies on the thing.

I had a series of Nokias, which are nearly invincible, so I wasn't as scared of dropping them.

My iPhone 4's camera is scratched pretty bad.

I loved having it naked, but I am going for a case or a bumper next time.

I had an iPod touch 2g that I had for a year before I dropped it and shattered the screen because I didn't have a grip enough on it. I bought an iPod touch 4 immediately and a year later dropped it flat on the screen face down on the concrete. Shattered it. Both times the device never stopped working. I even had a case for the latter one that sucked so much that I took it off a few months before dropping it. The cover sucked because I had dropped it on a corner and pushed it in slightly so it couldn't fit snuggly anymore.

I now have an iPhone and have dropped it a couple times but have a shitty case I bought from Kmart that is currently doing protection duty until I find a proper case that looks nice but doesn't add a lot of bulk.

I still don't understand why Apple would remove the physical buttons on a nano. It sort of made sense for the form factor of the last nano but if they're going back to the full size nano it's dumb. Physical buttons should be a requirement on their MP3 players.

My opinion might change if it's running iOS but it'd be so un-Apple to create so many different resolutions for iOS apps. It's be like Android.

Doesn't anyone use Apple's own iPhone case (aka the condom)?!

Perhaps Apple has a new case this year...
I call it the mankini.

I got one for free from the antennagate fiasco. I had always said I wouldn't have paid more than $5 for a case like that. It basically started disintegrating after a year. I've been without a case since then and never looked back.

The iPhone is so much nicer without a case, as long as your careful with your devices you should be OK.

I had my iPhone 4 in a case the first year but since going naked I have dropped it 6 times, recently on concrete asphalt road and nothing has happened to it. I'm extremely surprised by its durability.

How does the bumper look like a condom tho.

But yes, I've used Apple's bumper and another brand of bumper. They protect the phone surprisingly well and look great. Unfortunately, the build quality has been shit on both of them (though Apple's has lasted more, but it's starting to rip apart).

Naked always. All cases are abominations that make poor baby Jony cry himself to sleep.

I've never damaged my iPhones more than back surface scratches - even dropped it a few times unscathed. It seems that it either survives perfectly or shatters the whole thing depending if you're unlucky on the angle.

Been using the Apple bumper for almost 2 years now and it's finally starting to fall apart. Was pretty pissed the first time I took it off and found that I had a few scuff marks on the steel band around the phone.
