PS3 CFW & Homebrew: Scene Revived! -- morality arguments elsewhere

Are PSN games/demos now also opened for pirates?

Although a somewhat valid question, you are walking a very thin line, asking it in a thread that has a warning against what this question will inevitably take the conversation to. Quick answer is that they are, but they have always been as long as they were on cfw.

Is it safe to update games when running CFW? Would I have to get another modified EBOOT to get the game running again?

At the moment for 4.21cfw everything is pretty much able to run properly, so you won't need any modified eboots (for updates or not) whatsoever.

Been using the E3 CFW 4.30 - everything works fine. Been able to buy and install stuff from the PSN store. Had to delete and re-download Netflix but that was the only hitch so far.

Multiman 4.08.01 works with it as well

Could I upgrade to 4.30 from 4.25 (I have phat launch 60gb) and install this?

No. You need to downgrade to 3.55 before you can install any CFW, you can't just go from OFW 4.25 to CFW 4.30 for example. Downgrading requires hardware before you ask :p

I think he means from Rogero 4.21 to E3 4.30.

You can use Rogero's 3.55 downgrader pup to go from 4.21 CFW or 4.30 CFW to 3.55 then upgrade to 4.30.

So i am considering installing CFW on my ps3. Does this new firmware allow you to get on PSN or no?

First off, are you on a PS3 with a firmware 3.55 or earlier? If no, then stop right there because you don't have an option.

If yes, then yes. Newer custom firmwares (and even the older ones) have ways to get around blocks and get onto PSN.

Any talk of teams looking for exploits for systems on current firmware? I fear my disc drive will fail soon and would love the option to rip my library and play from the HD

I have a slim, so I can't even flash my PS3?

Can I upgrade from their cfw 4.21 v1.09, or do I have to downgrade back to cfw 3.55?

Has any of you actually used the 3.55 downgrade pup?

From the instructions it looks like they do recommend downgrading back to 3.55 first if you're on 4.21cfw

- Updating from CFW3.55/4.21 to the CFW4.30 v1.00 should be done using the following steps :
1- Proper Way ( CFW4.21 --> CFW3.55 --> CFW4.30 )
---- Downgrade back to ver3.55 using the guide above.
---- Once on Rogero CEX3.55 v3.7 you can update again from Recovery Menu into the new CFW4.30 v1.00.

2- Alternative Way #1 ( CFW4.21 --> XMB Update --> CFW4.30 )
---- You can try updating from CFW4.21 to CFW4.30 v1.00 from XMB by using the "System Update --> Update via Storage Media".
---- If it didn't work, then you'll have to use the Alternative Way #2.

3- Alternative Way #2 ( CFW4.21 --> Recovery Menu --> CFW4.30 )
---- You can try updating from CFW4.21 to CFW4.30 v1.00 from Recovery Mode.
---- If it didn't work, then you'll have to use the first Proper Way ( CFW4.21 --> CFW3.55 --> CFW4.30 )

Depends if your system was ever on 3.55. What model and type PS3 do you have? Check your PS3 model number against this to see if it's compatible. If you bought it new in the last year and a half you are probably out of luck.

This is getting crazy. I kind of feel bad for Sony....

The amount of people still on 3.55 or willing to go to the effort to be on 3.55 would be pretty minuscule in the scheme of things. The real concern will be if it ever becomes available to systems that were on 3.6+ out of the box. I personally can't see that happening any time soon though.

Constantly, but they haven't had much luck (at least, no one willing to talk has). Kakolotto (god I know that's misspelled... big name in the scene) has been looking for a new exploit for ages... the best they've come up with is a means to install things to the hard drive, but not a means to run it.

With access to all the latest firmwares that at least gives them better chances of finding something, but there is no immediate signs that anyone has a working exploit, again at least not anyone that wants to share.

Oh boy, over $100 to downgrade? I think I might just wait and see where the hacking scene ends up... D:

You might be able to find someone in your area who does it for a fee that ends up being cheaper than buying the flasher outright. That's probably a better option if you are only planning on doing it for one system anyway. It's a pretty annoying task to do yourself if you are unfamiliar with it.

I've tried that route before, but had no luck finding anyone unfortunately. I'll have to keep looking, see if anything pops up on some Kijiji or something. Plus, I'm not too bothered about doing it myself if I have to; I love opening up stuff likes consoles and "messing around". It's just the price cost that scares me, haha.

Updated to 3.55 OFW no problems. Went ahead with Rogero as per N.A.'s links and instructions. Everything went well except now on the last part, whilst installing 4.21 i have a black screen after the 100% for about 2mins now. What to do? Did i just brick my system? i'm afraid to touch it. Fuck!

I hate the fact the the Tortuga Cove forums for neither the 4.30 nor the 4.21 give a straight answer to an upgrade path for people on a NON-Rogero 3.55 v3.7 3.55CFW (I am still on kmeaw 3.55). Then when someone asks about upgrading from a 3.55 CFW like kmeaw, you get 3 mods all stating to read the guide on the first page, wtf.

With all of the talk of bricks (I don't have a hardware flasher) even when it is supposedly safe I don't want to touch it with a 10 foot pool.

I just went from KMEAW 3.55 to Rogero 4.3 with no issue on a Slim.

Yep. Your post was too late for me. I was on Kmeaw 3.55 and didn't realize you had to be on a previous Rogero. Now all my stuff is messed up. I'm on 4.21 and non of my previous CFW stuff works. can't go back to 3.55 OFW either, just tried it. If i'd stay on 3.55 i could've played most games that are out now since they're releasing new eboots all the time.

Not near Ontario by any chance are you?

I don't think there is any difference, you just update from the recovery menu the same way for both CFWs. Updating to 4.21/4.30 isn't reliant on your being on Rogero's 3.55 CFW.

Did you update with a disc in the drive?

In Ontario, yeah.

The guy in this thread seems to know somebody who does it in your area then. The thread is a bit old but that guy is still active so just send him a PM and see if he can point you in the right direction.

Edit: Damn, website is blocked. ps3news . com is the website but censored out.

Yeah disc in the drive or your eboots might need to be resigned if you have replaced them to make games run on 3.55.

The OP of this thread has a link to the guide you're looking for:
http://www.pshomebrew.net/wiki/3.55_to_Rogero_4.21_Guide

Basically, you want to go back to OFW 3.55 before going to the higher CFW. That's the safest possible method.

If in doubt, check out pshomebrew.net. If there isn't a guide for something there then it's probably not a good idea to be doing it yet ;)

Any time you mess with the firmware on your PS3 you're running the risk of a brick, so it's very important to know what the pros and cons are, and to follow a reputable guide (e.g. one at pshomebrew.net) to the letter.

I'm still on CFW 3.55 at the moment and in no particular rush to upgrade just yet; my copy of Dirt 3 Complete Edition still doesn't work (and would on CFW 4.21 or CFW 4.30), but I have a backlog anyway, and my newer games (RE6 and Dishonored) have just been patched for 3.55. Once there's a CFW 4.30 option that includes region-free DVD and Blu-ray playback I'll upgrade, but in the meantime 3.55 works fine.

Was on 3.55cfw kmeaw and got to 4.21cfw rogero 1.09 fine here. The homebrew not working anymore is unrelated, 3.55 signed apps don't work on 4.21, have to redownload patched versions that are compatible again.

What should your system setting say if you're running Rog 4.21? Mines just says 4.21 but on the xmb, under photos the icon actually says homebrew. I can see everything i had before, but when i try to run multiman i get an error. I also can't run a couple of games i used to run off of the xmb. They show up but i get an error when i run them.

My system isn't bricked it just won't run any...homebrew? can't play any of my backed up games.

Im pretty sure something messed up because i had to manually turn off the system after the Rogero 4.21 update was installing. It showed a black screen and i waited a while and nothing happened. Afterward i had to manually shut the system and when it came back it did some recovery stuff. Im running an ancient version of multiman though. Could it not be compatible with 4.21?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Try install one of the new versions of multiman or showtime that are signed for 4.21 and see if it works. If you still have the app_home folder under the game menu you are definitely still on custom firmware.

Im downloading Multiman 4.04.03 right now. I had ver 1.2 or something crazy like that. I had tried updating it before but it always crashed so i kept going back to the version that worked. Of course i just tried playing a disc game (F1 '06) and trying to quit the game the system froze on me. I'm very sure i have the app_home folder so its good news if im still on homebrew!

Thanks for the input.
