This is the first I've heard of Disney and Lucas partnering up. I thought Lucas loved to think of himself as an "independent" filmmaker. Maybe now the CG will actually look good without all those obvious blue screen shots.

Either way, I'm excited for new Star Wars even though it will probably suck.

Hopefully the crew is striving for "the best Star Wars film ever" rather than "eh, it's better than the prequels."

343i has proven with Halo 4 (from what ive read) that if you get a group of people that really care about the source they can crank out something special.

lets hope Disney can let that happen for Star Wars.

yup. Carter is actually a solid film, and one I suspect will hit "cult" status in a few years. It was horribly overbudget and marketed like shit though (partly through no fault of its own...) which doomed it.

Is it POSSIBLE to make a sci fi film shittier than the prequels? sure. Is it probable that this will happen, with Disney making it a tentpole film, and no more directors/writers (i.e. Lucas) that can't be reined in? Not really.

Pirates films, Prince of Persia, etc. disagree. Not that I'm defending the prequels by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm sure this will spark nerd rage... but I am totally fine with them totally dumping the EU for moviemaking purposes.

Same here.

In fact, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Being weighed down by all that continuity would only hurt possible story avenues for these films.

Unfortunately no, but i know that his PIXAR movies do have heart. I was just trying to say, that while GP is a great movie, it doesnt prove that his 'magic' translates to live action as well.

you should fix this. iron giant is an awesome movie.

And as for your criticism of "ghost protocol"- it's not really MEANT to be the same type of movie that star wars/iron giant/incredibles/ratatoille are.

you're not going to get 'heart' out of a team of black ops killers working for the government. But damned if he didn't try.

Wow. This news actually has me excited about the Star Wars franchise again. Now give me the original trilogy cuts on blu-ray, Disney!
Same. Growing up with the original trilogy I was crazy about Star Wars as a kid. When the prequels were announced I was a kid inside again. Sadly they didn't turn out quite how I expected them to be.

But with this deal today, there's a great chance to invigorate the franchise as films again. Who can be mad about that?

I'm doing this so that the films will have a longer life.

Adding this argument to the copyright lobbying by Disney, this is a really cynical and greedy argument.
what the fuck does this even mean?

thanks for your input in a Star Wars thread.
Keep on beating the dead horse. Star Wars is a story that should have been left closed. You cannot keep on adding shit forever before it dilutes the story to its bare minimum.
If you did, you might realize that we actually consider this good news for the franchise.
That's not the impression I get from reading this thread!

All of the pirates films (sans 4, which I did not see) smack the shit out of the prequels, and it's not close.

Are they amazing, film of the year material? no. But actually go back and WATCH the prequels. Terrible filmography. lifeless CG. Horrible script. Shit acting. Hell, the acting from Depp, Rush, OR Nighy alone is better than everyone in all the prequels put together.

Even people who are usually solid in other movies (Portman, Jackson, MacGregor) somehow magically turned to crap in those films.

Interestingly, this also means we will be getting Star Wars movies without John Williams scores relatively soon. The man is already 80something so he may live to score the 2015 film but beyond that...Michael Giacchino time?

I hope one of the characters of the new trilogy say something like this: "can you believe there was a time people though the Force existed because of a living thing called midiclorians, or something like that.. hahaha, our universe used to be so silly!"

When Tim Burton takes Star Wars over he'll bring in Danny Elfman.

Star wars has been expanded almost non stop since ROTJ in comics, novels, and games. There's quite a bit of material, some of it quite good (KOTOR comes to mind).

Filming some of this material so it reaches a wider audience has no downside, except to nostalgia whores who don't want precious childhood memories "ruined."

Don't like additional stuff? don't watch it. Hole up in your basement with the original series on VHS.

Pirates of the Caribbean movies are much worse than any of the prequel movies. I say this as someone who doesn't like the prequels.

Whatever makes money I guess
Despite the bloated running time of POTC films they're atleast an entertaining way of spending an afternoon

I laugh at the people angry over the news.

I always knew it was inevitable we'd get a non-George Lucas trilogy of Star Wars live-action films, but I figured I would be much older when they came out... if alive at all. I'm so happy about this. So very happy.

Time to get into Clone Wars!

Well for all i know, Michael Bay could've directed GP and it wouldnt have been much different (given the script). It's actually a nice copliment, because there arent many great action directors left, so seeing Bird hit a homerun on his first try, is a good thing.

Maybe it's just me, but the Bourne Trilogy, the Craig Bond's all had much more heart than GP. I'm not dissing GP, but they played it relatively save. It was like they took the best parts from the previous movies and tried to recreate them.

Like i said before, i think the fantasy portion is very important for a Star Wars film and that's one of the areas where the prequels fell flat. That's why i'd like to so a proven fantasy director taking the reigns of the franchise, like del Torro or Vaughn (going by Stardust). Going by that i'd even prefer Stanton and i didnt even like John Carter all that much, but mainly because i found the setting, aliens and actors incredible dull (which would be easily fixable in the SW universe).

I feel nothing. All my love for the Star Wars has been beaten, butchered and killed by the last three movies and is buried somewhere in the Nevada Desert.

But if I could wish for something, its that they keep Mark Hamil on as Older Luke and make him batshit insane.

Hell, Empire is far and away the best Star Wars movie for me personally, and it's the one that Lucas didn't write and/or direct. I doubt that's a coincidence.

But Kirschner was a average to bad film director outside of Empire and Kurtz was a awful producer outside of Star Wars, and Kasdan made/wrote some incredibly terrible movies.

It says a lot about a director when he goes from a movie as beautifully photographed and lit like Empire was to Robocop 2 which almost looks like a TV movie. Yeah Kirschner was dropped into that situation but still, his track record doesn't point to him making classic after classic.

So who is the catalyst for Star Wars and Empire being great? Even Jedi is a movie most Star Wars fans love but was not produced by Kurtz, barely directed by Marquand, featured a cast coked out and bored, yet still co-written by Kasdan. Jedi could afford to be lazy because it already had elements of greatness, such as predefined situations and characters bestowed upon it by the prior two.

I think it is to Lucas's credit that he has great story ideas or scene ideas, and has a great visual and dramatic sensibility. However, he is often better having someone else work to bring those ideas to screen.

When people get all sad about movies in series never being as good as they hope you have to remember how many movies are made and how many movies are as good as or better than something like Empire Strikes Back or Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Hell, even Spielberg still has a hard time topping a film he made in the early 80s. Unfortunately those films are as good as movies get and if there was some incredible formula for cranking out classics I think more classic movies would be made all the time.

I'm interested to see what a non hack writer can do with Star wars. George Lucas got lucky and put a deathgrip on his lightning in a bottle for 40 years. But after 3 prequels I can't really forget that soon.

Del Torro makes a good film, but he wouldn't be my choice for a space opera. He does atmospheric and spooky very well (Pan's labyrinth, hellboy 2) but that's not what I'm really looking for.

I would probably say David Yates, who did Deathly Hallows pt 1 and 2 would be a good pick (there's your fantasy chops right there), and i don't think anyone's mentioned him yet. But you know who would be beastly? Luc Fucking Besson.
