LEGO GAF |OT2|: Building Dreams. Demolishing Wallets

When I was a kid I loved the Ice Planet and Space stuff.

I haven't build a Lego set in YEARS.

What should my return set be? I'd rather not spend more than $100.

Edit:
If I still have the instruction laying around, do you think it's possible to order parts to build this:

6898-1.jpg

Or do they not make a lot of those now-a-days?

To be honest, the set can be bought now on Bricklink or ebay and not for an outlandish price...UNLESS you're like me who has a thing now for buying old sets NIB and paying quite a pretty penny...it's so addicting...=(

Bingo!
OUCH, those new sets cost quite a bit...can I resist?

While much of this list will mirror Ghostmind's, here are my top 5 sets released in 2012:
(If I got the B Wing or Bag End those would probably get in here. 2013 for me I guess)

10228_box3_na.jpg

1) 10228 Haunted House
Great construction (ignoring the issue of bag #1, which could have been easily fixed), but amazing on display. A large scale dollhouse approach to a building that makes Town Hall look pedestrian for the best building of the year. Different from the modular series due to its dollhouse style hinge construction, and for building detail on every single side of the building. It looks magnificent once done, and comes with a great collection of mini figures.

10225_box_na_front.jpg

2) 10225 R2-D2
Who doesn't love the lil Astromech droid? A very neat and fun build, and unlike any other I did over the year. The entire thing comes together very nicely and makes a wonderful display piece while also retaining some playability. The head is a turn off to many, but I am not sure how else it would have been achieved while keeping the same scale.

tJ7XM.jpg

3) 6869 Quinjet Aerial Battle
Probably the biggest surprise of the year for me. The other Avengers and Marvel sets were decent, if uninspired. I had gotten them solely for the mini figures, so my expectations of Quinjet were not that high except for a parts and figure pack. But lo and behold, it is one of the best ships out there. A very solid and hefty ship once completed, and surprisingly complex in the assembly. There is great SNOT work everywhere on it, and lots of playability. And this set is the king for "Swooshability" right now. You just want to fly it around and make it blow stuff up.

ec75_lego_x-wing_starfighter_box.jpg

4) 9493 X-Wing Starfighter
One of the first sets I bought in 2012, and what reawakened the beast for LEGO. This set sent me on the path to the Dark Side. Nice scale, and a very neat build. Many rightfully refer to "dat nose" while constructing it. It is quite cool how that part looks so simple but comes together so uniquely while building it. It looks great on display, and like any good starship, it is also highly swooshable. Bonus: it comes with a Porkins mini figure.

lego-lotr-gandalf-box-art-595x436.png

5) 9469 Gandalf Arrives
There are larger and more complex Lord of the Rings sets out there. Almost all of them are great sets and much better than initial pictures made them out to be. But this set is absolutely perfect at using a bare minimum of pieces and complexity while simultaneously capturing the mood and look of the film. A very quick and neat build, and also comes with one of the brand new horse figures.

Honorable Mentions
9495_alt1.jpg

9495 Gold Leader's Y-Wing
Nice size, and neat construction. The use of smaller parts to achieve implied detail is exceptional, and it (along with the TIE Fighter) make a perfect, and almost required, complement to the X-Wing.

9465 The Zombies
Exclusive to Target and LEGO stores, and now sadly gone from all the shelves. This Monster Fighters set not only came with great Zombie figures, but also featured the best vehicle from the entire Monster Fighters line. The fact that it has interactive graves is just bonus.

3061_alt1.jpg

3061 Friends' City Park Cafe
My dark horse entry for the year. A small, fun set. You get a lot of neat and different colors in the set, but the little details as you go are much like the modular series. From tables and benches, to ice cream makers, and even a cheeseburger, this set has so many neat little flourishes. Do not be turned off by the Friends line. There is actually a lot of neat stuff to be had from it.

Mini Figs of the Year
sh037.jpg

Available only as a freebie from LEGO back in the summer, this figure is both comical and fun to fit in with any theme. I know I have gotten a lot of mileage out of it, as Hulk goes with everything. Yes, I would actually put this figure above Deadpool.

lor021.jpg

King Theoden came with the Helm's Deep set. The intricate paint job on the armor and helmet are what set this figure apart from all others in the LOTR line.

col099.jpg

It's a guy. In a bunny suit. 'Nuff said.

Since it is the last day of the year, I thought about doing one of those retrospective/countdown things for LEGO released in 2012, so I bring you...

ghostmind's Top 5 LEGO Sets of 2012

tJ7XM.jpg

6869 Quinjet Aerial Assault
Released around the time of the Avengers movie, this set offers a lot of action and excitement from the movie, with Thor, Iron Man and the Black Widow engaging Loki and a Chitauri warrior. While not a perfect translation of the Avengers aircraft, the build is surprisingly complex and detailed, which you quickly learn while assembling the cockpit. In all a great swooshable set that is largely faithful to the source material.

Damn it, stop making me want this!

Bone, what exactly is the problem with bag #1?

Bone, what exactly is the problem with bag #1?

Almost all the interior details of the house, such as the desks and whatnot, are built in bag #1. Bag #2 begins construction of the house proper, and occasionally (and without any warning) you have to put those parts you constructed from bag #1 into the building. Many will pass you by because you have to be looking for the parts to go in, as opposed to them saying you need to put it in.
If it followed the same method used in the modulars, you would construct and add in the little details as needed instead of making the stock pile at the beginning.

My votes on this years sets (or purchases in some cases).

Sub 1000 Pieces Build of the Year

eWg0k.jpg

Sith Fury-class Interceptor

Would have loved this to had this to scale but it would have been massive expensive and very difficult to display. The wings are genius and some of the best minifigs I have ever seen.

Plus 1000 Pieces Build of the Year

THsce.jpg

B-Wing Starfighter

One of the icons of the original trilogy despite having far less screen time than either the X-Wing or Falcon the B-Wing holds it's own. The build itself introduced some great techniques which, as a Space Moccer, I am looking forward to trying for my own. Not too swooshable as it is a bit fragile but displays better than a even the mighty SSD.

Biggest inspiration of the Year

QS3EG.png

Metal Grudge by Mahjqa

This was the reason I found Bricklink. Having just come out of my Dark Ages and with only a few sets to my name (other than OT Star Wars from 1999-2001) I dread to think how much I spent on the parts but not only did it spur my new obsession but it's a damn good drive too.

My Grudge:
naAWc.jpg

Technic of the Year

m5nLA.jpg

4x4 Crawler

While it may not be the fast buggy/race car RC set we probably all wanted it is a great build which will provide some very useful parts if I can ever take it apart but that looks unlikely for now as I climb over books and what not every now and then.

Surprise of the Year

k3uBh.jpg

R2-D2

Like many others I was not taken but the thought of a LEGO R2 but the accidental reveal on the Haunted House video gave away a great looking set which is equally fun to build. He sits pride of place next to any set I have and always gets compliments.

Honorable Mentions

yk5n9.jpg

Aero Booster - Picked up cheap for parts but enjoyed the build, liked it so much I bought another one.

7g2bv.jpg

Super Star Destroyer - Massive build which inspired me to make my own SHiP... one of these days.

txsgD.jpg

Fire Brigade - Bought to see if the modulars were for me and it turns out they are not but this still finds a place on display as it's such a good looker. And dat 2nd floor.....

BBgMX.jpg

Mace Windu's Jedi Starfighter - The one that restarted it all, my wife bought this for me Jan last year as a birthday gift... little did she know what she was starting.

Most Anticipated for 2013

Jedi Defender-Class Cruiser - Hope it's huge.

I know Haunted House, if the rumors before the holidays are true, will soon be gone and should be a priority but how much longer do you all think the LoTR sets will be available for. I still need to pick up Mines of Moria and i'm still on the fence with Weathertop.

Dat SNOT work! This set does look really cool.

Like it. Looks Big Ben will have a sibling next year.

They only came in May/June this year, should be around for at least 6 more months I would think.

I can see how that can be frustrating. Even with normal instructions, with the bricks required per page listed, I have to back track because I forgot something.

I was worried that the problem was along the lines of it being an uninteresting build.

Hopefully Amazon discounts this soon and I can buy it.

Edit: Had to drop in to work for 30 minutes to take care of something. Considering I am still on vacation time, I took a few minutes finally put together the calendar. Quite good fun and I get to do it all over again next month.

UK Lego Shop @ Home has updated at midnight with all the new 2013 sets finally up, EXCEPT Galaxy Squad.

That seems to confirm it's at least delayed coming out over here - but why?

Looks like I'll import them, or get them when visiting the US in March.

No TMNT, either, I've realised - although Argos has all of those listed in its catalogue.

Edit: Oh, and Happy New Year.

I was at Walmart to meet a friend and while waiting checked out the Lego section. Ended up getting Ghost Train for $64. I didn't want it, didn't even go to Walmart to buy anything but the price was too good. I wanted the ghost minifigs and will use the pieces for MOCing.

That didn't take long....

30250 Ewar’s Acro-Fighter
88000 LEGO® Power Functions AAA Battery Box x 1
8870 LEGO® Power Functions Light x 3
8871 LEGO® Power Functions Extension Wire 20” x 1
75001 Republic Troopers™ vs Sith™ Troopers x 1
75002 AT-RT™ x 1

Free Chima (meh) and Free shipping.

Also missing the new Planets sets despite them being in the catalog as Jan 1st.

This. The biggest ship is so sexxay and it's under that price. Here's mine:

Quickly becoming a favorite. Impressive swoosh factor on this puppy. Not to mention dat orange.

That does look really cool. Have you tried displaying them without those translucent yellow cones? Something seems off about them when paired with the nice white and orange colour scheme.

I have no eye for color matching...I might try all red, though.

Probably just a weird snafu, but it looks like Galaxy Squad isn't up on the US or UK s@h sites...at least not the theme page. You can still search.

Goddamnit! I post about us UK folk not getting Galaxy Squad yet and you go and post pics showing how gorgeous they are ;)

Anyway, just finished my build of the Arkham Asylum - it's a great build. Lots of interesting techniques in here to inspire MOC modulars.

Plus, that asymmetrical design/alternative build is ingenious from both a design perspective and as a sales gimmick - I am seriously tempted to buy another to make a bigger one, with multiple sides, then mod the extra cells/chambers, maybe add a padded cell, etc.

Mmm. Still debating what to make my first big purchase of 2013 and Arkham keeps calling. I know I have tons of time on Horizon, but Arkham looks so fun. Mini figs look good, and it looks like a good parts pack for MOCs.

Finally took some quick shots of my Christmas stuff.

A helping hand with Ollivander's.

ie33hjnUJWNFP.jpg

Ollivander's has the neatest interior, though I really wish the building wasn't so top heavy. If you breathe on the back it'll fall forwards.

ibgAMNKhkJatyX.jpg

Gringott's is the best looking on the outside. I love how they did the columns.

icib6mkDiClso.jpg

Borgin and Burkes is kind of bland compared to the other two (there is basically no interior outside of a silly removable wardrobe thing) but the roof with skylight was fun to build.

ibnuSBOVeX8abw.jpg

I also got the big dump truck from the mining set.

i7L3jur2vsDLM.jpg

It's about half the size of the old one (I bought it used if anyone wonders about the crooked stickers, and yes it drives me nuts). I dunno if either of them really capture the feel of those trucks. Compared to minifigs the older one is probably more to scale, but it's also too long and the weird un-Lego-like single piece truck bed is really weird. The new one is kind of stubby and has a boring engine, though I do prefer the hinges for the bed itself.

iB2eojhUstHqY.jpg

Just feels weird being able to nearly fit the new truck into the bed of the old one.

The roof on Borgin and Burke's is probably my favorite element of DA, but I agree the inside is disappointing....not even a skull? Feh. I appreciate that the wardrobe actually matches the one you get with Hogwart's, though. ;)

Ollivander's is definitely my favorite building by far. It will probably stay up when the others come down in the near future. Gringott's suffers the most from getting grouped together, I think...they really could have gotten away with a $100 or even $150 Gringott's set, complete with railway, vaults and dragon...now THAT would have been something. I doubt I build it again, the pieces are too valuable for moc.

Already tore down my Diagon Alley. The parts are too much to resist for MOC. The builds were quite fun though, but it is an amazing parts pack.

EDIT: Also, I would have killed for a true Hogwart's set. Dont worry about keeping it mini fig scale. Just give me a massive, detailed set of the entire castle exterior. Sadly, it seems Star Wars is the only theme that gets the insane sets like that.

This is the year I got back into Lego. The sets I picked up this year:

X-Wing Starfighter 9493
Desert Skiff 9496
Gandalf Arrives 9469
TIE Fighter 9492
Shelob Attacks 9470
Wolverine's Chopper Showdown 6866
Catwoman Catcycle City Chase 6858

Plus a couple of the build your own galaxy sets.

Bring on 2013's sets!

Just got back from seeing the hobbit and it's purged me of any remaining desire to buy any of the sets. Was bloated and too long, I knew splitting it into 3 movies was a bad idea from the get go.

Happy New Year LEGO-GAF! May 2013 be full of great LEGO sets and MOC brickspiration!

I also finally found The Golden Dragon after a long hunt. The LEGO Store pulls through once again! How fitting to end The Year of The Dragon with a dragon.

You might want to grab the set ASAP because Ninjago dragons fetch a crazy price. Every person in line was buying one or two of them.

Oh, and the fact that it's the GOLDEN DRAGON. It's a work of art when you see the shimmering gold in person

Still hoping for a $400 Minas Tirith or something...everybody keep buying those LotR sets...

^LEGO's Year of the Snake Creator set is must-buy for me. It'll be my first.

A roundup of Cuusoo parts ideas from Brickset.
Apparently brick elements do not get much traction on Cuusoo because it is harder to sell the general public on a new type of brick than it is a themed set. I will say that some of the parts listed in the article, particularly the curved studless tiles at the end of it, would be fantastic to get and use in projects.

How would this work?

For the studded one, wouldn't the plates or bricks that attach be flush with the surface? So you wouldn't really want them to be curved.

Ad for the holes, are they double depth to allow two pieces to connect?

Time to wake this thread up:

Can you pull out the arms of a minifig to replace them with a different one without breaking or damaging the fig permanently? I wanna make sure before i try something...

Yes, but pull off the hands first or you might crack the wrist holes. I find pushing the arms back can be tricky so I just use a hard surface (Lego is harder than wood so don't do it on a wooden table).

Well. Wasting no time. LEGO sent out some Chima promo e-mails today, and all the sets are now for sale on S@H and amazon, as well as probably everywhere.

Free chima polybag set (with eagle minifig) with $75 purchase (lego stores). Minifig is not exclusive though and the vehicle is very standard.

Tempted to dive in but I don't know where to start!

Yup, Chima is everywhere. Saw a huge display at TRU on Sunday. I wonder when the cartoon will begin?
