Living in the shadow of Amaz
One other random thing that struck me was how it seems like everything in her office is still done by hand. In many ways, Japan's office culture is remarkably conservative about adopting new technology, but I have thought that most magazines would have moved to word processors and digital printing by the time this manga began eight or nine years ago.

Oh, yeah, that's certainly noteworthy. My area is the internet, so I don't have any reason to write anything by hand ever, but from what friends tell me even newsrooms that deal exclusively with magazines and newspapers have abandoned paper for drafts a long time ago.

I bet things would probably be different if the manga was more recent, though. A lot can change in eight years.

Oh wow, I should probably watch this?

It's about a world where the size of your tits gives you status, and ninjas that go around chopping off tits of girls that are deemed unworthy. And the main character has the secret technique of being able to steal other girls' tits and absorbing them into her own, giving her ever bigger boobs. So she sets on a quest to change society.
Oh and she has a flat chested sidekick.

I was thinking it might have to do with writing on paper looking more interesting and dynamic from a cinematic perspective than sitting behind a PC.

Nadesico was a significant hit, at least amongst the otaku crowd. It's weird ending had nothing to do with it's lack of popularity - the gap between the end of the TV show and the movie was all explained in a Saturn game
The Saturn game ~The blank of 3 years~ is one of my favorite adventure games of all time, but it didn't really explain anything about the movie. It's also multi-route with very different stories in each route, so there's not any one single linear history to point to as what happened between the TV series and the movie.

and novel which came out between the two, but obviously never existed in English.
This on the other hand I backlogged and still haven't gotten around to reading. Might be something more directly related to the movie in there.

It looks very much like a stereotypical journalist's office from pretty much any film or TV programme I've ever seen. They seem to have laptops in the show, but clearly Hiro likes to write her reports down. But then I don't know how magazine offices work these days - I will admit to being a bit confused as to what the target audience of Jidai is, as it looks like some kind of Hello! style glossy tabloid when they show cover shots but it seems to have potentially more serious content judging by this episode.

So anyway, yes, I've joined in the backlog watch as I've been meaning to watch this show for years and never have!

I liked this shot when the smoke blew back at Hiro, even if it is done with CG.

While the "gimmick" of the show is a bit of an eye-roller - the insinuation that to work hard you have to act like a man, basically - and the overall production values are fairly basic, this was a pretty solid first episode, mostly thanks to Hiro being such a likeable protagonist. The writing accurately captures the stereotypical office dynamic for sure.

I hope that the characters are explored well throughout the series, particularly Tanaka. While he seems to be something of a "villain" in that he's comparatively lazy, I hope the show chooses to explore the fact that yes, there can be more to life than work - especially since Hiro's work/life balance is so poor.

Oh, my mistake - I was under the impression that the novel a straight adaptation of the game for some reason. I read a synopsis of the novel once, though, and it seemed to explain an awful lot of what went on with Ruri between the TV show and the movie, if not the whole Akito/Yurika thing. It's been a while, though, so I may be misremembering things.

You could be right.

It's pretty clear to me that the protagonist will leave her boyfriend and fall for Tanaka, therefore learning that work isn't everything or something like that.

At least that's what I expect.

What didn't happen this episode?

I find it really weird how this show handles its climaxes. It feels like they throw every possible twist out there to escalate things as much as possible.

Like, Kitamura can't just be indecisive about
becoming student council president, he has to be convinced two minutes before the form is due. He can't just confess to the outgoing president, he has to do it in front of the entire school. Primary characters then get to just turn and walk out of the assembly to confront each other because it's convenient. And then, since enough hasn't happened yet, there has to be a fight, because Taiga's been hiding a sword under her uniform the entire time
. I mean, really? When they go that far, it takes the emotional spark out of those later moments, because I don't feel like they're treating the characters seriously.

It was a
damn good fight, though
. They put way more effort into it than anyone could have rightfully expected.

I don't hate this series, but I just don't think it's entirely for me. I have nothing against the character arcs (except for how so many conflicts are caused by people refusing to explain the simplest things to people close to them), but the stuff around them pushes the melodrama farther than I'm comfortable with.

Who is quite hilarious.

I got the feeling they intended to do more with Akito in some other medium and then it never developed. :(

I don't mind Apis at all but there's something off with the pacing here. I think it's because the strawhats are moving as a group rather than engaging in individual stuff so far. If anything, I'm a little disappointed it got away from the strong first episode of this arc where Apis felt like she was a bond that transformed the strawhats from crew/nakama/whatever to family, especially what with Sanji acting so paternal.

Am I the only one who loves the CG tanks in GuP?
Oh the tanks look fine.
It's the flat ground textures (and the conveniently spaced clone-trees in the forest ep) that look bad.

I saw someone saying they mip-mapped the ground textures for the BD release, but I can't find an actual comparison anywhere.

And here's another bonus shitty 3D camera moment from this season.

You're right Maoyuu does win by virtue of the eye bleeding ghosting.

Yeah.... that first gif looks pretty bad...

Maturity, bitches.
Not saying the GCI in GuP episode 1 is good, but it didn't really distract. Guess I was too busy looking at the girls and tanks to care.

Really? I just pulled out the BD and watched the first couple of minutes, and it doesn't look any discernibly different to what's up on Crunchyroll.
