Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Sticky Det should have been the Forerunner version of the Grenade Launcher, like the Covenant had the Plasma Launcher. The GL was one of the best additions ever to Halo.
After Halo 1, the best additions have been the Battle Rifle (no spread pls), Plasma Launcher, and the Grenade Launcher. Only one remains.

So four new IPs from MS...

MS needs to do a better job of managing their current IPs first.
We all want to see some new IPs from MS, but do they really need them that desperately?

People always talk about exclusive IPs being the thing to win over potential customers, yet the 360 has cultivated the most popular platform/service. MS charges for Xbox Live while their competitors don't, and nearly every major AAA game sells best on the Xbox by a wide margin.

You could argue that it's not which platform will have the games you want, but which platform do you want to play your games on, and that is where MS has excelled.
I thought the second half of this season was fantastic? Even people that disliked the first half liked it.

(I need to play through it still)

Fantastic? No.

It improves on the first half of the season while still having pretty much all the faults (to varying degrees) of the first half. It's a marginal improvement, but still often more frustrating than fun.

Ehhhhhhhhh

Tashi - So Kevin what do you think of the grenade launcher from Halo Reach? Can you give any insight into why it wasn't brought back for Halo 4?

Kevin - Oh I loved the Grenade Launcher from Reach, it was a lot of fun. For Halo 4 though, we really just wanted to create our unique spin on the gun. I think what we came up with is a lot of fun to use and most would probably agree.

Tashi - Ok thanks! I thought so! I'm glad this wasn't a waste of a question...oh wait

That's a silly approach, but that probably is the same kind of bs answer we'd get. 1/3 is still batting over .300! At least maybe 343 might fix Camo..
again.

They better put out some new good IP's, now that Halo is dead I'm considering switching to PS4 next gen.

I read stuff like this and start to think that no co-op campaign missions could make some people happy. Honestly curious here, but what are you looking for?

Is it even possible to create 10-15 minute campaign co-op missions using existing mechanics and assets (with some new ones thrown in) that would be worthwhile to you?

I'll likely be getting both once I scrounge up the cash after all the games coming out at the end of this gen. Xbox for it's short-share of exclusives, and multiplat (if not on PC), and PS4 for Sony's exclusives.

There is only one way to fix camo. Make it a power-up.

I'm genuinely interested in Kevin Franklin's thoughts on the Camo, Mk.V and the Grenade Launcher. Why remove something that's not only fun, but isn't broken and is loved by the fans?

It's a question that has haunted Halo for years.. and still does.

I'll still probably stick with Xbox. XBL is a better service and XBLA is hawt.

But we'll see.

PSN games are legit these days and PSN+ is stepping up their service, BIG time. Free games monthly for being a member? Yes please.

Encounter design is my main complaint at this point, it's been better in the episodes 6 and 7, but still leaves much to be desired.

With 50 "unique" missions, the encounters and setups for combat are incredibly repetitive and stale, and more importantly SpOps regularly puts the player in combat situations that are just not fun. Ex: coming around a corner with 6 jackal snipers, Elites with fuel rod guns, setups such as the opening part of episode 6 where you spawn in an area where you are completely pinned down have little to no cover and the awful spawning system just spawns up in the open there again so that an Elite can rip you a new one with a Fuel Rod immediately after you spawn).

Fair enough, and obviously it doesn't apply to everyone, but with fewer and fewer exclusive games out there (games are so expensive now that launching on multiple platforms is essentially a requirement for most), the service becomes more and more important. I won't purchase a next gen PS instead of an Xbox simply because everyone I play games with plays on the Xbox.

Also, I know that MS wants to use the Xbox has a way to be the ultimate media distribution box some day, and hopefully that contributes to the old cable/satellite business models dying in a fire as fast as possible.

Yep. Put it in ordnance with speed boost and overshield.

Thanks. And I'm definitely with you on fuel rod enemies and just dropping a heap of snipers down our of nowhere, but I actually liked the beginning of 6.1 because you have to GTFO double quick, and decent cover wasn't too far away. It forced you to stay on the move. Absolutely agree that the spawning system is completely borked and leads to too many needless deaths.

Been a while since I've been in this thread and played Halo in general since I've been busy, and I see these threads still move quickly.

I'll commend 343 for keeping their promise about Spartan Ops being more diverse - aside from one MP map new to SO in general, everything else was brand new, and you had new types of encounters as well too.

Gonna get back into the game more again, but most of my annoyance with the game comes with the fact that this is the first Halo I've played without a full team, and it's the most annoying to play like that out of all of them.

Can anybody confirm this in game? I've got a couple stacked.

There's always been two expiration dates, for redeeming, and then for using - the redeeming one is what ran out yesterday.

Halo 4 campaign coop and Spartans ops coop has the best net code in any halo games's coop mode.

I've played a lot of halo coop in the last ten years. If you are getting bad lag in halo 4 coop you have a shitty connection or are clueless when it comes to home networking.

Attention everyone: you all are liars and are dumb when it comes to networking. Thank you broony for bringing this to my attention.

This is true, as our regular group never gets noticeable lag unless somebody's connection is on the fritz.

Co-op matchmaking on the other hand is a different story.

Fucking right. I have played halo coop on and off for the last 6 years. Halo 4 has by far the best net code. This is no crazyness, it's the truth. If you are having problems, have a look at your network setup or look to switch / upgrade your provider. If you can't be arsed to do this, keep having shitty games and blaming everyone else.

Uh huh. Keep whaaambulancing halogaf. It's everyone's fault but your own.

Which halo game has better coop net code then?

You're being antagonistic just to cause problems. Keep that in check and realize that even with a 40 mbps down and 10 up connection I still sometimes get shitty games.

I think I'm perfectly capable of hooking up wires and paying for good internet just as the next person and still have problems. Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works for everyone, next time if you have a suggestion try coming across a little less caustic and you won't be getting the 'whaaambulace' treatment in response.

But if it works for someone like myself, all of the time, wouldn't that mean its not the game that is the problem, but the individual connections?

It is what it is. H4 co-op performs about the same as Reach for me, which is to say: considerably worse than any other co-op game that comes readily to mind.

Guess my connection must always magically mess up when I put a Halo game in and then correct itself whenever I play, oh, I don't know, anything else.

Ok thanks mister.

It's still weird how they left the GL behind but the Concussion Rifle is somehow deemed to be brought over just about 1:1 from Reach. It even looks the same.

It's more like the Halo 3 Brute Shot, just reskinned.

Idea for a weapon: The Gravity Gauntlet

It's shaped similar to the one of the Didact's gauntlets (hand/wrist armor) that wraps around the user's right hand, with four "nodes" floating around the hand; two in the back, two in the front. The back ones are tethered to the front ones by hard light.

Sandbox Role: Vertical map movement, enemy player stun, weapon control

The Gravity Gauntlet's primary role is grabbing weapons, grenades, and so on from a distance. The range is only about two and a half Warthogs parked bumper-to-bumper. The Gauntlet runs on a battery, with more charge being depleted depending on the distance of the weapon you grab. Your crosshair has to be aimed directly on the weapon, at which point you're prompted to switch. It flings the weapon at you, swapping your Gauntlet out for whatever weapon you picked up; however, you can cheat this by switching to your secondary weapon as the weapon gets close to you and then switch back to the Gauntlet.

A secondary role is stunning enemy players; if your crosshair goes red on an enemy, you can aim your hand at them with an open palm (similar to the Didact's force choke) and completely stun them. They can still fire, aim, and shoot grenades, but are stuck in the same physical position - even if they're in midair. Stunning a player eats up a whopping 5 battery per second - overheating after 5 seconds, the only instance where this weapon will overheat. It's mostly useless in 1v1 situations because you have to stay still to effectively maintain the charge (holding right trigger, looking, and moving would probably slip your crosshairs off the enemy) and you're setting up a perfect line of sight for your stationary enemy while you can't shoot, but has potential uses in team games. Examples include stunning a flag carrier, disabling someone being chased in midair so your teammate can assassinate them, preventing them from winning a race to a power weapon, rendering your enemy immobile so a teammate can splatter them, etc.

A tertiary role is vertical map movement, replacing the Jet Pack; on maps the Gauntlet is specifically designed for, "Hardlight Hooks" can be latched on to, allowing your Spartan to fly towards them as if you were using a grappling hook. These hooks can be placed in Forge and may vary if it's an objective gametype. Note that this hooking feature eats up battery.

You literally read nothing of my post.
I did. If Spartan Ops is lag free for me and my group every time, how can it just be something "that happens". Its not the game, and its not the code, its the individual connections.

Not defending broony's attitude btw, just the substance.

And in terms of advice, whenever re run a private match of Spartan Ops, if there's enough lag for us to notice it, we all bounce out, reset our modems/routers and try again. 99% of the time the lag disappears. If not, a simple reset wasn't enough to fix one of the connections.

What have you done to optimise your Xbox connection besides plug in the Ethernet cable then?

343 needs to get their shit together and just give us the Halo CE pistol and a custom game browser. Co-op netcode would resolve itself. Fucking eggheads.

Xbox live game dont even use that much.... In fact Im pretty sure it use less then 3 mbps down and 1 mbps up. I have a 50 mbps down and 50 up connection and I dont see a single difference with the 60 down 3 up that I use to have. Its all about ping and how your network is setup.
So if you have 8 player in the lobby from all around the globe the host will be given to the player with the lowest ping to every other player ( other stuff like connection quality, minimum bandwidth and network history are check too ) Depending on the location of host you might be the player with the highest ping to the to host. So even if you got the fastest connection around your still gonna get a shitty experience.
That's the joy of peer to peer gaming.
P.S. dont get me started on lag compensation :p

Nah I understand, that's why I'm not going to respond to him anymore. I'm just saying that even if it is individuals then every once in a while I would luck out on a really good connection.

In fact, I had a really smooth connection the other night with Nutter and Omlet but overall it's just really bad.

I think we need to call in Fyrewulff to get technical.
