CVG Rumor: Microsoft to reveal EA partnership at Next Xbox event

I sure hope not. I don't want a repeat of E3 2006.

Indeed, although it has been suggested that we should prepare ourselves for such an inevitability.

I, personally, don't understand how such a thing could happen unless only target renders are shown and unless I'm very much mistaken, Microsoft rarely engage in such practises, but then I lack the insider knowledge that is perhaps informing such a statement.

The alternative of course is that the poster in question is lying, but why do such a thing?

Yup, it was Peter Moore who made FIFA on Vita happen for launch, he is very Sony friendly. He left MS on very poor terms from what I remember.

He is industry friendly more like ... Allard, Bach and Moore took the sword for RROD and the warranty issue. If RROD didn't happen he would most likely still be at MS

“I won’t go into the nitty-gritty of every component, but if you look at it in an aggregate basis, the new consoles are between 8 and 10 times the power of the current generation,” he said.

So... nine?

Shit like this is why the gaming industry is so fractured. "You like Crysis, you are a caveman dudebro LCD." "You should play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate or else you are shit."

I play everything, I'm just honest about what sucks. EA's games generally tend to suck. Rarely they climb out of the quagmire and let someone try something new. They then quickly ruin said new IP by "mainstreaming" it to maximize sales, when the end result is abandoning what fan base it had.

This thread is awesome. The article implies something (EA partnering up with MS, Sony forever alone), what EA says is nothing of that sort and then we have a group of people celebrating the "partnership". :D

Securing BF 4 as a timed exclusive would cost MS what?
Probably a few million.

Because MS and EA continue to show themselves as sleazy money-first companies and that's not a good way to endear yourselves to customers.

lol, if you think any console or software company care about endearing it's customers you're crazy. They want money to stay alive and grow, and to keep their investors happy. This isn't a popularity contest.

I will go in with the mindset that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. ;)

M$ is taking too damn long! As each day passes, so does the consumers interest in the nextbox. It has been so long, I wouldn't be surprised if noone bought a new nextbox. It's just ridiculous. Consumers patience faded 4 years ago. Long before suck-nect and the shittttt appeal to casual newbs

Dead on arrival.

Timed exclusives

Either DLC or games.

Really all it could be.

Agreed. It comes down to money, and while they could earn a pretty penny for timed stuff, actual exclusives would be ludicrous based on all the revenue they'd forego by not releasing the same games on PS4.

Since none of those three were hardware engineers that makes no sense. Allard was pushed out by Ballmer in the same way Ballmer pushes out all executives that show promise in MS. Moore left because MS continued to cut their first party spending and shutting down internal development and he got frustrated by the lack of long term vision for Xbox. That's the story I have heard for those two, I don't know about Bach, but he struck me as an idiot so it's no loss really.

This is a serious post or sarcasm? It's hard to tell on forums these days.

I'm hoping its some kind of deal for kinect exclusive content as I could give a rats ass about those gimmicky add ons.

As long as PS4 gets the games and DLC I'm happy for both camps.

I'd quite like the weird Jack the Ripper game Visceral was developing.

I was just thinking about this game the other day. It's such a game they decided to cancel it, I think it could have been a great title. Visceral have a knack for creating excellent atmospheres and their level design is also pretty great too.

Oh, what could have been.

I will go in with the mindset that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. ;)

Words to live by. I fell for the bait, caught myself in the honey-trap, shan't happen again that's for certain.

Mass Effect - yes. Bioware makes shitty games. That started with Jade Empire. I'm not dumb enough to be fooled by the production values in their shitty 3rd person cover shooter with weak RPG-lite elements and binary morality systems. What's worse, their already mediocre work completely hit the shitter in short order once being bought by EA. ME was tolerable and DA was ok, the first made pre-EA, the second already well in development. ME2 was the first step in EA homogenization, DA2 was dogshit, ME3 was just as bad.

Mirror's Edge - Good idea, needed a sequel to polish the edges. Where is that sequel?

Dead Space - good first game, solid second game, ruined the concept with the 3rd game and their focus group/market research approach to game design.

Battlefield - less shitty version of CoD? Yes, it does suck dick.

Need for Speed Most Wanted - inferior to Burnout Paradise, Criterion making steadily worse games the longer they've been with EA.

EA had a brief window early this generation where they gave some interesting new IPs a chance. When those didn't immediately break out they either gave up on them or went back to their same old bullshit copycat turn and burn game design. That period is the anomaly in EA's long and storied history of making shitty games. The industry would be significantly better off without EA.

I can totally see an MS/EA partnership developing though. From the sounds of it MS' Xbox division is now being ran by the same "I don't play games, they're for basement dwelling losers, this is just a stepping stone on my way to being CEO at Unilever where I can get free Axe body spray" bro-douches with MBAs who've been running EA into the ground.

Thanks for the detailed response; I had a detailed response back but, due to work related shit going on, closed it. I will sum up my response and say that I agree with you about Mirrors Edge, enjoyed NFS:MW but wish Criterion would make a proper Burnout and completely disagree about the Battlefield series.

people who are actually thinking bf4 will be xbox exclusive are INSANE. sales are too big on ps3 for them to kill all sales for the platform (and ps4). microsoft would have to pay ea the opportunity cost of all those sales at the minimum, which would be the stupidest investment.

This thread is amazing. EA sucks now.

Again, other than a very brief window when they rolled the nice on Dead Space and Mirror's Edge when haven't EA sucked?

EA hate has been a NeoGAF staple FAR longer than Activision hate. People here have hated EA pre-Madden exclusive.

You don't think Battlefield is being homogenized to better compete with CoD? That effect has felt pretty damn heavy handed to me.

The only part of EA that I care about is Bioware... EA as a company is complete crap, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them leverage their position to force digital downloads and no used games. I expect they are trying to strong arm Sony into the same position.

Honestly, the world would be better without EA and I would love to see them go bankrupt

Not fussed unless it's Mass Effect related.

Same here, and if it is, well, then they can frankly just f**k off. I'm not going to buy another system for one franchise. Even timed exclusivity, or exclusive DLCs, would be giving the finger to the series' fanbase.

"Exclusive partnership" probably just means timed DLC like Call Of Duty had this gen. Major publishers can't afford to ignore any potential revenue streams. I dont think MS can cut a check big enough (short of buying the company) to convince EA not to put any big franchises on every system possible.

No, not at all. I would agree if they ditched vehicles and pretty much everything that makes Battlefield, well Battlefield but I haven't seen this at all. I have also played every single BF game since the 1st if that helps.

Its the end of the gen. Everyone's games have been safe. That's what happens when three sequels come out in one gen. Happened to EA, MS, Sony, Actvision, etc..

I remember there being an attempt to crowd fund a counter bid for DICE when EA bought them because people hated EA so much at the time.

Sega was putting out the NFL 2K series.

Im just amazed at the turnaround here. Blizzard announces exclusivity to PS4 and everyone says its a good deal for gamers, its just rumored that EA could give MS some extra content and its time to break out the pitchforks.

It's more like "who gives a shit about Diablo III" vs "holy shit, fifa/madden only on one system! that would sway millions of console purchase decisions"

Yup, it was Peter Moore who made FIFA on Vita happen for launch, he is very Sony friendly. He left MS on very poor terms from what I remember.

He actually wanted to move back to San Francisco. His family fell in love with the city and they had lots of friends in the are when he worked at Sega and EA is located there as well. He liked working for MS, just not living in Seattle.

I don't think M$ is looked too fondly round here. You might want to change it.

I think it is ok to leave "M$" up since it immediately lets you know the maturity of the poster so you know whether to take them seriously or not.

I know this would never happen but can you imagine if Microsoft came out and said "So we have a deal with EA where Madden and Fifa will only come out on the 720"!, it would be a huge incentive for many gamers to go with the 720, same if Microsoft or Sony secured COD or GTA , it would mean their console would win the war imo.

Sadly, no.

If you are developing on more powerful hardware, the games by default will look better. You will see a noticable down grade between E3 and launch when retail units hit for the Microsoft machine. Sony's will upgrade, but I am trying to prepare GAF for the eventual meltdown when the Xbox games look substantially better.

I shall be looking forward to the inevitable meltdown if it does happen.

It would make for interesting times. Now I'm ever so slightly hoping it does happen, just to see the fallout.

- Dragon Age 3
- Mass Effect (new game)
- Battlefield 4

Gran Turismo is a stronger IP in Europe than FIFA. Don't obfuscate the FIFA brand with football fandom as a whole. EA walling off that fan base when Pro Evolution still exists would destroy them.

It would be especially painful when that would obviously result in Sony basically having the ICE team move into Konami's offices and making sure Pro Evo destroys FIFA technically.

Their market share would drop to nearly zero in Japan, they'd lose all forward progress they made last generation in Europe, and all for what? A consolidated soccer fanbase in the U.S., by far it's weakest market, and whatever moneyhat MS is giving them. I doubt MS is ready to write the eight or even nine figure check needed to make that happen.

This doesn't even get into the politics of EA trying to keep their FIFA license (expires in 2014) with Sony as a voice of dissent. Sony is after all a global sponsor of FIFA, the World Cup, the Women's World Cup, etc.. Sony has been cutting FIFA solid eight figure checks every year for half a decade now, and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future as it's one of their strongest marketing angles. That makes EA's licensing agreement look microscopic in comparison.

solid post. any thoughts on Madden going exclusive?

Corrected to make sense. What is a typo because it's a very contradicting paragraph.

Sony paid for Battlefield 3 and MS paid for Fallout/Skyrim had timed exclusive DLC this gen as well. Then Sony paid Konami for region only exclusive content where US players were blocked but not European players.

There has been a few but not many. I can't think of more.
