Monster Hunter Online (Capcom/Tencent, CryEngine 3) officially announced

So, confirmed for West release. That's step one.Let's see how close to main MonHun games this turns out to be.
Hmm, that should've probably been put into the OP - I had no idea about it being over here as well.

CryENGINE® 3 set to Bring Monster Hunter Online and Legend of Yulong to Life

Crytek’s groundbreaking CryENGINE® technology is being used to create Monster Hunter Online; a major new collaboration between Tencent Games and Capcom that will see the popular Monster Hunter series released internationally on Windows platforms for the first time.

As a PC-exclusive installment in the hit Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter Online will give millions of new players the chance to experience the Japanese phenomenon. The MMORPG will contain Monster Hunter’s trademark blend of vast environments, awe-inspiring fantasy creatures and in-depth customization options.

“The Monster Hunter games are known for immersing players in breathtaking worlds where great gameplay and spectacular sights go hand in hand,” said Areil Cai, Director of Business Development - CryENGINE. “CryENGINE 3 is the perfect fit for the series, and will ensure Tencent Games and Capcom are well equipped to make Monster Hunter Online the groundbreaking MMORPG experience fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating.”

As well as being used in the creation of Monster Hunter Online, Tencent Games announced this week that Crytek’s CryENGINE 3 would also be utilized for the development of Legend of Yulong Platinum Edition – a new version of a popular Chinese MMORPG that will offer players an enhanced, more realistic visual experience. With long-standing experience of the global engine business and an enthusiastic gaming community of millions to serve, Tencent’s continued reliance on CryENGINE for high profile new projects is testament to the growing reputation of Crytek’s proprietary development software.

With over 20 million sales to date, Capcom’s Monster Hunter series enjoys huge popularity in Japan and boasts a growing army of followers around the globe. Monster Hunter Online will be developed for the international market by Tencent Games and Capcom, and marks an exciting new era for a series that has enjoyed critical praise to match its popularity with players.

In this case, I can try out the game for myself, and actually see whether it has anything else going for it other than teh graffix.

Now that I watched the video I don't really get where people complaining about the graphics are coming from. It looks great to me, from the monster designs to the characters and of course the environments (Cryengine foliage yay).

Not sure what's fishy about that. 800x240 for top screen in 3D mode. 320x240 on bottom screen for any mode. 800+320 = 1120.

Second screen's res didn't matter here.
If the game is just putting a map or something on the second screen its contribution to the graphics workload is negligible. Since the discussion at that point was about rendering workload, it makes no sense to add it up if that is the case. With "3D" I simply meant 3D graphics in that case, not stereoscopic rendering.

I don't know why there are defenders on a crusade right now that are like "yes but this game only has pretty graphics, we already have monster hunters".

AFAIK there are no online MH games on PC platform for Europe or America. This is WHY it is big news for pretty much all of us, MH fans or interested people in the game. Cryengine 3 is just icing on the cake.

Far from everyone will bother to buy a 3DS or Wii U just to play MH online. PSP games requires complicated ad-hoc party via PS3 and only MH3U got it. As much as I like the series, if I can get a solid MMO-like MH game on PC, this will beat pretty much any other versions available on the market for me.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Deep down you know why. I'm seeing a similar heat in this thread to the Ninja Theory and DmC debacle, even though this game isn't replacing normal Monster Hunter releases, nor is it taking massive liberties with the license other than making it actually to the same current day graphical standard for once.

You're also 100% right on where the marketbase for a good meaty Monster Hunter game has always been: on PC. Where titles like Vindictus, League of Legends, PSO2 and many other MMO's have their wider success because theyre just the right target market. Convincing my non "own all the consoles cuz I'm game nuts" friends to get a PSP, 3DS or WiiU to play some Monster Hunter with me never worked. "Its on Steam right now"? Twenty of them will jump in.

It's getting a worldwide release? That's awesome. Usually these are always China first then like a year later it's released in the West.

Ah alright.

No where in that PR does it state the game will be released in the west. Crytek is a German company so China is an international market to them.

edit: Missed the worldwide bit. Hmm.

I'm gonna be laughing in your face when I'm playing this instead of MH4!

I personally don't like the Cryengine look. Especially the grass and terrain, but the models and lighting does look nice. I would have liked for them to try and go for something closer to the Monster Hunter CG look.

I hope this includes the improvements and gameplay of 3rd gen Monster Hunter games.

I seriously hope they don't take too many liberties adding new moves and crap like that. Then again, I hated the switchaxe for a while before I just got accustomed to it, so I'm sure I'll adapt. I just don't like the idea of the changes being made by a person who doesn't really know what made Monster Hunter so successful.

Preach it PC-Gaf bro. Handheld GAF keeping us down and envious at the possibility that we're finally getting some online Monhun love in the West on the PC.

If PC GAF thinks they can handle MH they're more than welcome to it, the more fans of this series the better. :p

I have to be honest though, I tried imagining ways they could make the MH control scheme even more, hmm, "involved" and mouse/keyboard pretty much take the cake, lol.

This makes it almost sound like plugging a controller on PC was some lunar shit from the future.
Anyway, it can't get really worse than MH Tri with a Wiimote (or can it?).

Classic controller was the only way to make this enjoyable for me on Wii.

Please. I've never been a fan of Monster Hunter, no matter the platform. The games are slow, and require too much of a time investment to really enjoy them.

Damn, really like the new (CGI?) reveal trailer. Didn't think it was going to get one what with this being a more er, low key affair for Capcom, but there it is.

I can't believe I'm just now noticing this, but the monsters look absolutely massive compared to their mainline equivalents. The Velociprey look to be about as big as a Velocidrome, and Rathian is practically an elder dragon.

The CG also hints at Rathalos and Kirin being in the game, as their armors make an appearance.

The game definitely looks good, at least from an environment standpoint. I think the characters models (not monster) and animations need a bit of work. The animations just look a bit off and instantly take me out of the experience.

I hope there is a true mainline HD MH being developed with the joint force of Capcom and Nintendo....since I don't expect SCEJ for this....

My question is, can WiiU do this level of graphics?

It's CryEngine 3, which works just fine on the 360 and PS3 already (yeah, yeah, I know), so it would work, in theory. With how close Capcom and Nintendo are about the mainline games, though, it's much more likely that it would receive a prettied-up port of MH4 than this.

If they are thinking about a HD MH game, then they will push Multiformat, especially if they want push push more into the west. At some point Capcom has to think about a massively expanded user-base and make a PS3/360 version. Or just do a Tri and make a 720/PS3 MH game.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Is that the full CG intro? Way too short isn't it?

It's not like this game has to render Crysis 3 PC quality and sprawling levels, current consoles could do it just fine.

The ground is mostly flat, and I doubt you can visit the distant mountains shown in some scenes, MonHun has always had backgrounds like those.

Low polycounts all over, in fact some assets might as well be ripped from previous games, just with sharper textures painted over, seemingly not even great normal maps, fur shaders, or anything appropriate.

In fact, I don't get people saying this looks great. It doesn't do anything to justify the engine and platform. MH3U on WiiU at least has the excuse of being a 3DS upport which was a Wii downport + expansion with various enhancements. It's consistent, nothing was made with different specs in mind or anything, plus it's one of the better efforts in the series art style wise, outside some sub species and monsters from PlayStation Portable's Portable 3rd game. Either way, you don't have high polycounts with low res textures and few layers or the opposite, it's all of a given relatively low spec quality perfectly exploited and complimented by nice art.

Someone even commented on how foliage looks so great thanks to the engine when it's just the same old sparringly used grass sprites and individually modeled plants, trees and what not as ever, again, just sharper.

Looks friggin great! Cryengine! Looks great, dont see why people are upset. MH on WiiU looks awful, that system can do better

For real.

I do most of my gaming on PC, and more often than not at bullshot resolutions, the graphics for this game looks totally fine!

It's not anything that's completely blowing me away, but compared to the other versions of Monster Hunter available, it's leagues ahead.

It's not the graphics I have a problem with; I actually think they look great. It's the animation and combat however that seemed totally off. I have a bad feeling that Tencent just slapped a MH license on a game they already had.

It seems to be based off of the older Monster Hunter games rather than MHTri/MHP3rd/MH3U.

If hitboxes aren't fixed for this, I would be disappointed as hell.

That would make no sense at all... Why go back to the shitty hitboxes of MH2 when Tri/P3rd have been out for so long already ? :(
