New trailer for Beyond: Two Souls - PS3's swan song?

OK, I've watched the trailer and the Tribeca footage and the GameSpot gameplay analysis. Holy shit, what happened tonight. Loved HR, then thought the Beyond stuff they showed at last E3 was rubbish, and now here I am absolutely LOVING everything I'm seeing about Beyond (except the tearing, blech). Wow, just wow.

Do you have a link to that Gamespot gameplay analysis?

Alright. But some people like for videogames to be more videogame like and they like to see elements of it-- and the fact that they took it to a film festival only drives the point, or at least the perspective some of us have on it. Again, it's not my call to make, but it isn't shielded from criticism. For me, it's hard to be excited for a videogame that is story driven and trying desperately to be cinematic when the writer/director doesn't have anything impressive on his track record in that regard. However, like I said, this is where the gameplay usually comes in and at least promises to be fun, but there's not even that aspect.

So all you're left with is a game trying to be a movie from (IMO) an unproven storyteller. I'm not down on this game, I haven't played it and I don't know much about it, it could be fucking awesome for all I know, I'm just saying that cinematic trailers like these give me nothing to go on. If videogames in general had some kind of track record of being great narrative and cinematic experiences, that would be different.

You didn't seem to have a problem when it was Silent Hill: Downpour cinematic trailer with KORN song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkuVJZ5Rk0Y

I'm indifferent on the song, it's not atrocious to me. Wouldn't matter anyway as it won't be playing while I'm exploring dark rooms anyway. I think the presentation looks really good.

And you weren't always so all about "Gameplay please!" either:

For me it's like... it doesn't always need amazing gameplay to be good, like a Silent Hill game. There are no Silent Hill games with exceptional gameplay. However, the story, atmosphere, music, characters, and just overall vibe is what makes it "fun" for me. Spec Ops may have a terrific story that I may end up championing; I don't know. But so far it's doing exactly nothing for me. If it had a combination of impressive atmosphere, art direction, characters (which I admit they seem a LITTLE better than standard fare but not much), music, and so on I'd be like eh gameplay-shmameplay but it's failing to impress me in even those ways.

The Silent Hill games have a history of those types of trailers, maybe that's why. I usually don't care for cinematic trailers though in general, especially ones from the creator of Heavy Rain. Also, Silent Hill has never had great gameplay or focused on the gameplay. But sure, I make exceptions for certain things, everyone can be selective about some things and still maintain a general consensus. Furthermore about the gameplay, in that context of that post you chose, nothing about Spec Ops was doing it for me and all I said was that if the story/art was doing it for me, that if it didn't have good gameplay I wouldn't mind as much-- and vice-versa. However, Spec Ops failed to do anything for me in any way, which is why the story and art wasn't enough to alleviate the (IMO) repetitive gameplay. But if the gameplay was better, I'd not mind the story/art failings.

That trailer actually got me excited for that game, its story looked interesting and appealing to me and I knew not much about the plot at that point, and that trailer revealed more to me. This trailer was along the same lines as some other trailers I've already seen for it. Basically Silent Hill has a strong history of impressing me when it comes to the narrative and such; David Cage games, not so much. So yes, I was more excited for that despite it being a cinematic trailer. I was anxious at that point to learn more about the story.

I never understood the hate some people had for Heavy Rain. The Walking Dead seems to be universally praised on this site yet heavy rain seems to be hated by many.

Heavy Rain deserves more credit.

Yeah, that's a weak fucking excuse, you know that right? Especially since you were criticizing Heavy Rain and Beyond for doing the same thing. If anything both Heavy Rain and Beyond has excuse for doing it since their main focus is on the narrative of the game.

I can't believe anyone who's played the last few iterations of Silent Hill can say this with a straight face. Silent Hill's storyline post Origin has been even lamer than Heavy Rain. With little originality or variety. It's always one guilty party going to Silent Hill/Silent Hill imitation next-door city, nightmare ensues, repeat and rinse. And the mood/atmosphere have been getting worse and worse with each iterations, culminating in snoozefest Downpour.

I have a different opinion about them than you do. It's cool.

I really liked what they were going for here.

I am in the camp, of personally being okay with non gaming type games (like heavy rain, the walking dead), and gamey games.

Why can't we have both gif. indeed.

Might be just me though, but i can't help but shake the feeling that this game would shine so much more on the ps4. Not to say the graphics looked bad, but there were some parts that felt a bit rough.

But overall, very impressive, and really enjoy these types of moody games. Also, the music in the trailer was fantastic. If that's any indication of what to expect from the OST than i can't wait. !

I am so in love with Quantic Dream... Heavy Rain might have been more movie than game but I still think about that game, its music, atmosphere and characters... it was great. Ultimately a fun time is all I care about. I will buy this day one!

Well at least we agree that you have no base in your criticism of this cinematic-based trailer.

My base is that Cage has yet to make a good game to me, and therefore a cinematic trailer isn't working for me, and I don't particularly find that the elements presented in the trailer gives me any kind of hope for the storyline in the game. But you're right-- my criticism toward the trailer for this and cinematic trailers in general -- sometimes they work for me, sometimes they don't -- is derived from my own opinions and perspectives.

And to begin with, I just said that cinematic trailers have a hard time doing a lot for me. I didn't say they never do, or that they're never good, and I was mainly stating that I understand why they don't work for some people. Again I appreciate what Cage is doing and I'm probably going to buy the game when it comes out because I do like story driven games. Some of them exist. Cage hasn't made one yet to me, but hopefully this changes.

My apologies if I didn't make myself clear/concise enough, and I don't mean to sound overly negative about the game. It could be great, and I hope it is. I still want to be friends with everyone.

I really recommend you watching this 35 min walkthrough:

It's full of spoilers but IMO, the acting is top-notch, the dialogue sounds natural, and overall, much better than whatever came out of Silent Hill franchise in the last few iterations. I personally love Silent Hill but because of that, I've been more disappointed with their attempts as of late. Heavy Rain may have some plot holes but its overall mood, presentation, and its ability to make me want to protect its protagonists far exceeds than what Silent Hill titles can muster these days. I think I stopped caring for a SH protagonist post Travis Grady.

walking dead also got a lot of hate in gaf, as did journey. some people were really pissed both games won so many awards, and that it would destroy gaming as we know it.

I just simply disagree, I liked Downpour's story a lot and I found it to be coherent, and interesting. Heavy Rain felt like a convoluted mess to me and I didn't buy into its twists. I didn't like the story very much in Homecoming or Origins though, but I still liked them more than Heavy Rain's story. Well, maybe not Origins...

Thanks for the link, but if you had to give a spoiler warning, I have to refuse because I want the majority of the game to be fresh, especially if it is to have its full, intended effect on me.

The Gamespot video has some pretty convincing story speculation
there is another entity like Aiden(sp?) that may or may not be connected to a second person that has somehow been released and so the DPA take Jodie in and train her in order to challenge it. Fits in with her line about being used too.
I wouldn't be surprised if it were all stuff to mislead us though!

So, how many awards will this game win? I hope it's great and wins a lot of awards. Cage must have been very happy to see Journey and The Walking Dead win so many awards.

What you consider 'convoluted', I consider it challenging. But I seriously question anyone who thinks Heavy Rain's story is convoluted. It's a simple story of a father wanting to find his son, a reporter looking for juicy story, a detective wanting to find out the truth, and a private eye hired to do menial tasks which may or may not related to the murder. The stories then intersect with each other and it's through the interactions that things are revealed. The twist isn't the first time it's being used in a narrative. Anyone who's into film would have seen Shutter Island, The Descent or Haute Tension (Hard Tension), where an unreliable narrator is used as storytelling device. You may or may not like such device but it's not exactly an offensive thing.

And I can't believe anyone would choose Homecoming over Origins. Jacob's Ladder has done that storyline better. But eh, YMMV.

From what I've seen so far, it only spoils a non-essential part of the game but it's up to you if you're one of those who need to be fully unspoiled to enjoy a game.

I can't wait for amirox to play this

Yeah. Really, I'm the least of this games' potential antagonists. Everyone will need all the energy they can muster. I'm nothing. All I did was say that cinematic trailers hardly ever do anything for me. I'll probably enjoy Beyond, hell I may even really like it, cinematic trailers or not. My rant will be forgotten and buried.

I'll give it another chance. I remember not really buying into some things but whatever.

This is going to be better than Heavy Rain. I have that inclination going by what I've seen. Even that brief section really ramped up and that isn't anywhere near the meat and heart of the story.

If Cage just called it a "visual novel" or whatever, I wonder if it would alter the perception of those who find it... I guess, "overly cinematic".

brandonh83, maybe you could elaborate on specifics. Nothing is less interesting than how uninteresting you find something. Obviously you care enough to express all this but maybe you can expand beyond "it doesn't work for me"?

Oops, I guess I spoiled myself of an important section from watching that 35 min preview. He, he, it doesn't matter. I don't think I want to fail that section. :p The story is good so far. It reminds me a bit of Tokyo Godfather.

New trailer provided a lot more hype compared to the reveal trailer.

I actually care about this game now. Looking forward to seeing more.

Great! Can't wait, woohoo.

All though I'm bummed that it is probably going to get away from Heavy Rain controls of QTE for everything, because everyone hates that with a passion. But I actually enjoy it... oh well, hopefully it'll be good.

I felt that I did, although perfectly fine arguments have been made in contention with what I said. I never meant for it to explode to be honest, I was just explaining why cinematic trailers have a harder time impressing me than trailers that show me good looking gameplay and story. Like I said, I was no fan of Heavy Rain so I can't trust Cage just yet on the story front, and that's why, largely, this didn't work for me-- simply put, I may as well be seeing everything I didn't like about Heavy Rain yet again.

It's difficult to elaborate beyond that. In this case, I'm just hard pressed to be, well, impressed, based on Cage's writing before. I think he's a highly intelligent person, but he hasn't did a story based game that did anything for me yet, so I have nothing positive to go on in that regard.

The weakest PS3 exclusive this year if you ask me. Heavy Rain was a terrible game and i can't expect much more from this one.

On the other hand, The Last of Us looks amazing.

I really dont understand heavy rain hate. I loved if for what it was.

Amazing. I didn't realize that Ellen's character was a "gifted" person. Did Xavier, err, Wilem Dafoe recruit hee because of her talents. I don't know.

Time for a media blackout to commence.

went in with the expectations of Heavy Rain, and then i actually watched it.

wow..... i am really impressed. Was not expecting that.

this is definitely a genre that could use the ps4 leap the most though, so if it isnt already, i hope they port it.

Me neither, I don't know what people were expecting.

And the story/dialogue wasn't good, but compared to what? There were a lot of parts to that game that were absolutely incredible and made me excited for the future of gaming.

If the game had decent voice-actors it'd probably be one of my favorite games of the generation.

I'll just watch a let's play on youtube or something. Or would that be considered piracy in this game's case?

You'd be missing out on a personal emotional experieeeeence.

Seriously though, you'd be stuck watching whatever the LPer chooses to do rather than making your own choices for each situation, without knowing what will come of them.

Good trailer, but I really was hoping Cage could get away from supernatural/psychic bullshit for once in his games. Still, good variety of locations and scenes.

I really dont understand heavy rain hate. I loved if for what it was.

If you don't know after the lengthy, lengthy posts explaining in great detail why many of us disliked it, then that's really on you at this point.
