I'd like to see a top 50, see how much vita software there is.

I wonder how the used market is doing nowadays.

Yeah except you missed the biggest reason on why PS Vita is failing which is its lack of third party support or even first party support.

PS4 is in unknown territory right especially as we don not know the games, or the price two massive factors.

Let's be honest, Sony's first party ain't saving any platform in Japan nowadays.

Nintendo better have one heck of a plan to reach those shipment figures because with sales like these there's no way in hell the wiiu will hit those numbers or even get anywhere close to it.

I can't see it doing well except with unbelievable support (like all exclusive to 4 and the biggest ones... and insanely low prices, neither of which will happen).

It doesn't matter if it's a good price for it, it will still be a big, unnecessary, expense for the console itself, which is problematic these days. I bet it will be like a year or two before PS4 is doomed dies down.

Also I don't agree that games are the biggest reason for Vita failing. Price again, market habits. Of course games as well, but not to the extent that people make out, imo. Fifa 12 and CoD deshite is enough for Europe. The price wasn't right for the amount that could be bothered to play on a dedicated handheld, and without insane ads, that won't change. Games are however what Sony should be focusing on, of course.

Yeah. I should have just said GT but even then that is rumoured for ps3. Knack may be PS4's best title in Japan.

The PS4 is probably going to rely strictly on 3rd parties and will probably sell pretty meh in Japan until big name games start to hit it exclusively.

Can't say I agree. Pretty sure that might be different when we finally get news on the Final Fantasy for next-gen consoles. I assume even if its cross-gen it will still be able to push PS4 to a early mild success, or at the very least more successful than the launch of the wii-u.

I just hope that the PS4 doesn't decide on launching in Japan first. I hope for a worldwide launch but it should be centered around EU or USA. EU has been detrimental in supporting the PS3, while the US has been turned into a XBOX centered territory, which gives them reason to launch it first there to try to coup the lost market share.

I have this morbid desire to see it sell less than the 360. I mean, at least the later has games charting.

HW numbers? No chance IMO. Software sales? It is already below 360 software combined...

I guess PS4 will launch at NA region first.

Impossible to even try to predict PS4 performance anywhere, we do not even know the price or the launch games.

In that infamous "Any reason the Wii U *wont* dominate Japan?" thread, the argument that was that the Wii U had all the franchises (bar FF) that people in Japan cared about, Mario, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, yet those games are actually out now for the Wii U and its nearing PSP levels of sales.

Perhaps the strategy to have a successful home console in Japan is to offer games and experiences that they cannot get anywhere else, games that are impossible on a handheld, where the average Japanese gamer is forced to buy a home console.

I really wonder how Sony will approach Japan with the PS4, they are witnessing what is happening to the Wii U right now

Vita is barely more expensive than the 3DS XL. And in Europe Vita has regularly been price slashed near the 3DS price.

PS4 will not sell very well until the big Japanese console-only games come out for it. It wont make the PS4 sell gangbusters over there but it would be good if the rumors are true and Sony have FFvs13/15 on PS4. You cant get mainline FF games on handheld unlike monster hunter and it wont be port of MMO like Dragon Quest 10.

I'm curious to see what they have at TGS, but as of now there is no reason to think the PS4 will launch well. I'm curious about TGS but honestly I have a feeling we'll see sub-wii U levels from launch PS4. A cross gen FF to push the PS4? Moreso than Super Mario Bros. U? Even with a cross-gen FF the PS4 lineup at launch won't hold a candle (sales wise in Japan) to the Wii Us. I'm not saying the Wii u's was good: it wasn't: but the PS4s as of now is looking decidedly worse.

PS4 LTD for the first year:

1 million or less = horrible
1-1.5 million = meh
Near 2 million = great
2 million + = Amazing
3 million + = PS2/1

Okay, fair enough, some retailers in Europe sell it for more. Consider me surprised. Given how much its price has plummeted in Germany (Vita+4GB Memory Card+LBP for 199€) I'm honestly shocked it's not cheaper elsewhere. However the claim that "The vast majority of retail stores still sell the 3DS above 200€ and Vita above 250€" seems laughable when you can get it for much less at least in Germany and Italy, two important markets.
To be honest I don't think I'll be able to make such claim for much longer. Due to work I travel a lot and what I found is that retail stores seem to be finally catching up to the prices that have been practiced on-line for the past months. So I expect prices in both retail and on-line will converge in the near future. But for now most stores still practice MSRP.

So the excuse is that consumers who want to purchase a Vita are completely and willfully ignorant of all competing retail locations that offer it at a discount and are only aware of the ones that charge retail?
There are still people for whom their price reference is based only on the flyers in their mailbox. You would be surprised.

If you mean for the first full year it's on the market I'm a little confused. Does that mean by this scale Wii U is likely going to hit "meh" status?

Right now the WiiU is selling horribly but with the relaunch I can see it reaching 1.5 million. 700k over 6 months should not be too out of reach right? Maybe I'm being optimistic.

Just to clarify right now its at horrible status. If the relaunch works then its first year will be meh status.

Yeah was going to post the same thing. By that metric Wii U is not doomed at all.

All charts launch-aligned. All data from Media Create weekly releases.
Weekly numbers presented in logarithmic base 1,000 for clarity. In that case, zero units are represented by one unit.

Note, since this draws only from the top 10 it does not represent smaller titles.
e.g., software sales of zero are assumed if the console has no games in the top 10.

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 20 for each week.
I can't find the top 20 for PS3's second week. It has been assumed as zero.

Feel free to criticize or point out mistakes.

Bruno MB doesn't seem to have updated his Animal Crossing running tally, but it looks like New Leaf's week 25 beat Wild World's week 25.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=55224280&postcount=155

It has been fun to follow this. Considering how big of a hit Wild World was, it wasn't that surprising that New Leaf got off to a to a bigger start, but it will be very interesting if New Leaf ends up showing even stronger legs.

Given how many follow-ups to DS million sellers failed to repeat the same numbers, AC's success wasn't really that predictable, at least not with this scale. Nintendo was going to ship just 200k units in the first week...

Yeah, that's the link, I'll quote Vita's "future lineup":

Underlined came true (I might be wrong with a few though).

Strategy-RPG from Alpha Unit - Moe Moe Daisensou * Gendaiban++
Baseball game from Konami - Pro Yakyuu Spirits
RPG from Level-5 - Danball Senki W
Educational games from Media Five - They released a whole slew of these

I guess that's true. I was only looking at it from one angle. I guess system install base for each sales week would be another interesting thing to look at.

IF wii u keeps going as it is now at approx 10.000 a week it will sell 552.000 units this year.

which would bring LTD to 1.448.074 .

just not enough to "great" status .

Of course this is without taking Nintendo releasing first party titles on it in considderation..

I just noticed that in Famitsu Wii U YTD is under Vita 2012 YTD after the same amount of weeks.

Damn. If anyone predicted that before the Wii U launched people would have called him crazy.

He should have said first full year (meaning first Jan 01 - Dec 31 period).

First 4 months for WiiU point to horrible year but depending on the releases/price drop it could go to meh/great (or even amazing).

By then the WiiU would of been on the market for more than 1 year though.

What I meant was a time period of 1 year form the day its released.
November 2012-November 2013.

Looking back now it my status things make the WiiU seem pretty good lol. I think the way you said it is better.

Is that Steins;Gate game a sequel?

This Steins;Gate game's sales looks pretty low if it's a sequel.

Edit: Okay, finally finding some info on the net. I don't think it's a sequel. Watched some vids and it looks like mostly the same story but told through several different character perspectives. So there is some new scenarios and stuff.

I said that because, in my opinion, your scale makes sense for a normal year. Launch years/declining years are different because there are other factors.

For example, in its "first" year in the market Vita did >1M.
On the other hand. its first complete YTD was 690,839.

And I think we can agree that Vita's situation was more horrible than meh until the price drop.
