me before the reveal : "I may defect to MS"
me after : "that's some serious rocket science level stuff but...Xbox, go home"

Exactly what kind of "CONSOLE" is it?

I keep seeing this horrible defense everywhere. It's just bizarrely myopic and completely misses the point of most of the criticism.

Everyone knew this was a console reveal so please stop repeating this useless point. The issue is with balance and what they chose to focus on.

It's not a useless point, it's the only valid point. The biggest and most significant software conference of the year is less than a month away, everyone will see all they desire at that show. This was solely setup to get the hardware details out of the way so as to maximize their software showcase at E3. If you don't care about the hardware and what features it has, then don't watch. It blows my mind that anyone thought they would show a bunch of games at this when E3 is right around the corner. Tell me what would it have done for them? Do you honestly believe no one will pay attention to what games they reveal at E3 because Sony will be doing it at the same time? That they NEEDED this exclusive conference for such a thing? Because we know that Sony just knocked it out of the park showcasing all these amazing ga...oh wait. Both are doing the same thing. People are freaking out because MS wants to control the living room and Sony wisely capitalized on that by trying to give off the image that they are solely focused on games. Lets be real though, Sony will have many of the same features and at the end of the day, the only thing any of us give a shit about are what game are coming out for each respective system. MS can talk Kinect and tv until their faces turn blue but if they reveal a bunch of enticing exclusives at E3, you think gamers are going to say that MS doesn't care about games?

Have you guys read this "short" rant on Giant Bomb from user MordeaniisChaos?

http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/gen...-the-commentary-on-the-xbox-reveal-1436988/#1

It's beautiful.
No, it isn't. Even if this reveal didn't mean to focus on games, nearly half of its running time was, in fact dedicated to games...games that didn't impress in any way, especially graphically. We learned that the cost of a Kinect is subsidized into the console, forcing that cost on us, that it needs to be plugged in at all times. We learned that bullshit game licensing would take effect. We learned there would be no backwards compatibility. We learned that the device itself is fucking massive, and pretty ugly.

We learned lots of things that suck, and the fact that not many games were shown really weren't our complaints. This is an outright disaster.

It's almost depressing how stupid most of the posters in this thread have come off. This was a CONSOLE reveal, not a game reveal. The purpose was to display the system and it's specs, controller, and the services that separate itself from it's predecessor. The benefit of Sony and MS doing these conferences is that with all this information out of the way, E3 will do what it's supposed to, fully encompass games. Now instead of spending half the conference revealing systems, they can spend all of it displaying what exclusives they have to sway gamers to their console. Where are the games? At E3 which is less than 3 weeks away. Why the heck would they reveal them here when there's a conference specifically for such reveals so soon? If you thought this was going to be a major game showcase you are both naive and stupid. /endofrant

Also, if you think one company has the edge right now you are simply biased. There is one thing that decides which system a gamer buys (unless you get them all) and one thing alone and it's not press. It's which console has the most exclusives you actually care about. It's hilarious that people think MS showcasing multimedia functionality today in any way indicates that they don't care about games or care less than Sony. Really? You can determine that before we find out what games are coming out for each respective system? You can determine that they don't have gamers like you in mind? Ha! The only rational thing to do is wait until E3 and start forming an opinion then.

not a bad meltdown.

So the left side of the Xbox seems like a perfect spot to snap in the "mini X360" considering the differences between the left/right sides, full grated opening, and lone USB port. :p

Thread should probably be renamed to :"Durango Chained: fee for used games, no game sharing, mandatory Kinect"

I just feel totally underwhelmed by what they have shown. I'm Canadian which means that almost every single cable feature is useless to me.

So the "one thing" that decides whether or not you will buy this system was hardly shown and was not the focus of the reveal of said system? And that's okay? And people expecting something different are "stupid?"

Got it.

When you sell the game on Microsoft will deactivate your install via unspecified methods, meaning the next purchaser won't have to pay the second-user fee. Once you sell a game, the license transfers in the cloud. So a new gamer activates it and it is then removed from your account. In addition to that, you can play the same game on multiple machines in cloud using one account too.

I'm not so sure because the controller sync button is on that side.

It is a very weird place to put a lone USB port, though.

Trying to get up to speed here, didn't get chance to watch the event live. Do we know if backwards compatibility is in? I'm guessing it would have been mentioned in the main presentation if it was...

This thread became the Xbox version of the thread where Nintendo said they weren't having a conference at E3 and everyone freaked out saying they weren't going to E3 at all.

A company specifically says something, then a bunch of people either can't read or won't read, and then they come in and say stupid things because they didn't pay attention. Then everyone who did pay attention spends the rest of the thread correcting everyone who doesn't pay attention.

It's a vicious cycle.

Anyway, I thought the conference was pretty bad. All of the TV features and everything don't interest me just like they didn't with the Wii U. Plus the fact that they'll all be locked behind a paywall, and I'm not paying for any paywall unless it gives me benefits on the video game side of things like PS+ does.

And they totally showed games, that was actually deflating for me too. They showed what, 7 games (Ghosts/4 EA titles/Forza/Quantum Break)? Only two of which are probably going to be exclusive? So that whole EA montage was probably just showing me what those games are going to look like on PS4 too. They should have opted to show another exclusive game now instead and held EA off until E3. It seems like at your console reveal your main focus should be on things I can't find anywhere but your console. Because the only thing I got out of that conference is an interest in Quantum Break. If that comes out for PC then it drops back down to zero.

I'm still hoping some of the exclusives at E3 peak my interest because I really want to buy the system after being glued to my 360 most of this gen.

Did you not notice the portions of my post where I mentioned E3? Nice try.

Actually I'd add the controller as "another thing". Apart from that he's pretty much spot on. They covered what they had to tonight, leaving E3 for games and finer detail. Suits me, it's less than 20 days to E3 and the systems are months away.

Just to be clear, if he/she had added "Grow up you children" I would not have disagreed.

So since I'm guessing the new controller uses a new wireless tech, we're going to have to upgrade our PC controller receiver and get the new controller?

It almost feels like Microsoft knew they were gonna upset a lot of people by showing the entertainment stuff and knew there would be an even bigger shitstorm if they did it at e3.

Doing that stuff now at their own event probably seemed like the lesser of two evils.

I just hope they keep to their promise about E3 being all about the games.

I doubt they will release a new receiver, haven't they stopped making the original one? I plan on using the 360 pads I have already, not sure that the new features of the X1 pad will be supported by the majority of PC games.

I'm not saying be optimistic. I'm saying be realistic.

Let me be clear, here: I'm not in anybody's camp these days. I've worn different jackets. I used to be a huge dreamcast fanboy. I was an MS MVP back in the day, but I was mellow by then. Now I quite literally work for Sony (no, seriously. I'm a fully contracted developer, though we are mostly themes and marketing). My issue here isn't with the volumes of mistakes ms has already made today (the used game issue sounds like disaster in the making). It's the simple fact that they clearly stated, both days before and at the beginning of the conference itself, what you would NOT see today, and yet, people act like it came out of left field.

As a forum, we've seen much worse--truly underhanded, despicable shit from companies that we have, in the past, happily handed our money to. This conference was tame, boring at worst. Maybe it's experience talking, but man, I suppose I expected a little more jaded, cold, dare i say rational observation today. Instead, we get a legion of people who either werent listening for the last week or simply never intended to. I've had to literally step away from the forum to avoid going on a banpage...

Either way. E3 will be a spectacle. And I know that a lot of 'angry' people will either be totally placated (or not, because they didn't actually care in the first place, and find something else earth shattering to latch onto). Others won't. But that deserves the attention and , ahem,'outrage' we are seeing today far more than some stupid little set top box executive presser. IMO.
Kinda do wish you went on that banpage :p, maybe it would slow down the forum somewhat!
These 19 days are going to go by slow

Well, it is going to be in the cloud now. Good thing about cloud is that it is easily scalable to meet demand. Spinning up tens of servers is awesome. The days of truly dedicated server issues and having to rack news taking hours is going to be gone.

Just to keep the hype on controlable levels, MS also didn't show any Kinect games, probably for E3 too.

Yeah who knows, the mini 360 may not even exist. It's not official or anything. It just looked like an odd place to have a single USB port.

It might be the same as how the Original X360 HDD attached, where it didn't go the full length.

Maybe they intend that to be used for expanded storage through thumbdrive or external HDD?

edit: although if it were me, I'd use a rear port for that...

As someone that covers gaming for a financial institution this was a very interesting afternoon to be sure. Microsoft just made some pretty big bets and nobody on the business side I've spoken to seems to think they were the right ones. Some of the gains in Sony's shares this afternoon were a direct result of that. The most worried people on the planet right now need to be Sony's logistics/supply chain people.

I'm personally pretty underwhelmed by what was shown and more importantly by the 'vision' shown. The dream of a "singularity device" has been around for aeons and there's a reason nobody's been able to get there. We like our separate devices. We like our tablets for causal browsing, our pcs for working and our consoles for gaming because we don't have to compromise anywhere. They are not mutually exclusive. I had initially hoped the Yukon rumors were true and that MSFT would show two devices today. That way we'd have had a powerful console for gamers and a separate lighter 'apps' box that would do everything else and could be refreshed every other year to keep up with changing TV viewing habits. Instead we got what seems to be a poorly focused console that had to be seriously underpowered relative to its main gaming competition to bundle in a lot of functionality that is of unproven value, especially in the non US markets where all the growth is going to be. Core gamers will find the PS4 superior, the TV features you can get with a much cheaper Roku box or Apple TV that you can upgrade every year, Samsung smart TVs already come with the gesture based control schemes and tablets from Apple etc are better fits for casual gamers.

I actually started off working for MS back when the 360 was in development before I went to b school. Back then people like J Allard really knew what they were doing. In contrast, the xBox One sounds like it was designed by a very varied focus group. The one thing that really bugs me about the hardware design is the fact that it is underpowered because they had to sacrifice die space for embedded RAM and move engines. They had to do that because they wanted 8GB of memory which (they thought) would have to mean DDR3. They wanted 8GB of RAM because they had to have that to support all the non gaming stuff they planned to do. Essentially the entire design appears to have been driven, and eventually compromised on the altar of having your xBox put a green skin on the TV guide. In contrast, Sony admitted they were wrong with the PS3, hired Mark Cerny (who is a true legend in the industry if you are old enough) and designed the PS4. Is all the OS/TV stuff shown today cool? Absolutely. Is it worth sacrificing performance over in something that still is a gaming console? Absolutely not.

Finally shame on both MS (with EA and COD) and Sony (with Ubisoft) for falling for the exclusive content/DLC scam the publishers run. You're both wasting your shareholders money on stuff that has been proven to not sell significantly more hardware. If it isn't a significantly timed/fully exclusive AAA title, it is pointless.

Here is a rough size comparison based upon using the disc drives as a guide.

The 360 doesn't look right though :/
