Fantasia: Music Evolved Announced (Disney/Harmonix, 360/XBO, Kinect, 2014)

Say for example they announced a game called "Horses Horses Horses!" But they didn't show any horses in the trailer and instead showed dubstep mixes of riding songs.

That's basically this game.

Ehhhhh I'm not so sure about this one, despite being a HUGE fan of both Disney and Harmonix. HMX is one of the best Kinect developers out there, but that isn't really saying much since Kinect itself is garbage.

Also, I'm not sure how this has anything to do with Fantasia other than the fact that the Fantasia films are centered around music. However, they are centered around classical/jazz and this game is clearly pop-focused. I think this could really harm the Fantasia brand (that is, if anybody still cares about it). Harmonix gets some respect here since they did a very good job adapting The Beatles, so they clearly know how to respect work. I'm actually more concerned with Disney diluting the Fantasia brand by trying to make it hip and modern.

The trailer is really bad. I'll hold out hope for some good looking gameplay but as of right now I'm only very mildly interested in this game and that's due to Harmonix's involvement.

Edit: and here's a quote from Harmonix:

Harmonix said:
For those asking, Fantasia: Music Evolved's soundtrack will feature classical music alongside contemporary hits. Stay tuned for more info!

That's good news.

If you have questions about our ability to deliver on adapting iconic work w/respect & reverence, go play The Beatles Rock Band. I'll wait.

Drake seems kind of defensive. The difference here is that the reverence in Beatles Rock Band was apparent from the first trailer.

I have no doubt that Harmonix will do their best to respect the Fantasia legacy.

I'm completely worried that Disney doesn't give a shit about Fantasia's legacy and will push Harmonix to ruin in.

Well, John's being really defensive on Twitter.

I have no doubt that Harmonix is a good developer, and I don't doubt that this game will have classical tracks.

All they had to do was throw "and over 20 classical tracks from the Fantasia series" or whatever at the end and everyone would shut the fuck up. But they didn't, like idiots, so they get this mini-backlash.

The trailer was fucking awful.

I don't get why you put 'FROM THE CREATORS OF ROCK BAND' at the start of a trailer and then follow it up with flailing around to Bruno Mars with not a sight of actual gameplay or Fantasia music.

This is why I'm worried about Disney's involvement. Disney is publishing, which means they will be probably in charge of the advertising message. I don't think Harmonix made that trailer. It's far too glitzy and feels like something an ad agency made, and that ad agency would be under Disney's direction. That means Disney is pointing this game in a bad direction, at least initially.

Well, I think the idea is that this is not a typical game-to-movie licensee where you just take graphics and characters from the property and stick them in a platformer or racer. They're not making Fantasia: The Movie: The Videogame.

This is a continuation the Fantasia Walt envisioned, where this marriage between music and visual art would it'd continue to be iterated on for generations, constantly evolving for new generations with swapped out segments and new creative takes on music or animated (or perhaps now interactive) creativity. And maybe Mickey or another Disney character would appear to help reach a wider audience but that wasn't the focus, the focus was on expression and boundary-defying experimentation with the talents at Walt Disney Studios.

In visual form, less this:

...BUT, how this game actually connects to that dream of Fantasia, I am really, really, really struggling to understand.

Yep. The trailer is too conceptual, and isn't getting the game's message across. It just looks like a generic Kinect game trailer. The "Fantasia" brand feels slapped on, even though I'm sure it isn't in reality.

Wtf was that trailer? I literally cant stop laughing. They just put Fantasia there to try catter to some audience or something? Because that sure as hell didnt remind me of Fantasia in any possible way.

All those famous Fantasia tracks from Bruno Mars and fun.

Can't wait.

:lol seriously, wth...

That was even worse than I was expecting - even with all the negative reactions to the trailer.

Man I wish Harmonix made stuff I was in to again. Amplitude and Frequency were so incredible - and GH2 was great, but it's been a steady decline since then. I guess after 7 years I shouldn't get my hopes up.

Also, why are they using an old Disney IP that has zero connection to the game? With the music they're putting in it, most of the potential audience is too young to even know about Fantasia.

Sounds like Harmonix was making a new game but Disney went to them and said to toss their IP into it, ala Star Fox Adventures. Except here it makes even less sense.

Think you answered your own question. They're increasing brand awareness about an older film by tying in modern appeal. Maybe Fantasia 2015 is around the corner.

Well I was sort of close.

I GOT IT!

It's a game where you use a Move controller and/or a Kinect (depending on which systems it comes to) to, get this, conduct the music from the Fantasia movies!

I wouldn't buy this though.

Although after watching the trailer, I've changed my mind and would buy my idea over what they're presenting here.

It hasn't really been a steady decline, IMO. Rock Band 3 was the pinnacle of that series, and Dance Central got better with each release as well. Sure, Rock Band Blitz wasn't GREAT, but it was ok. This seems like the first truly big stinker for Harmonix.

This is pretty damn low. Why name it Fantastia when it seemingly has nothing to do with it?

What the hell. Cashing in on the name is not cool. Raising hopes/expectations and then dashing them expertly with that goddamn trailer.

Fuck Twitter and their character limit. Just signed up, but how can you honestly level a complaint or make a point in so few characters without looking like an ass?

Twitter sucks.

It's about time someone made a new ParaParaParadise!

Seriously though, I am kinda just confused by the project as a whole. Just seems like a weird pairing and that trailer didn't really show anything that would give me a good idea of what the fuck the game is.

I'm still about the partnership with Disney for this. Seems like it would've worked better as a Dance Central spin-off, no? The trailer uses almost exactly the same aesthetic and color palette as that series. Ugh, I love you, Harmonix, but this...I can't approve of this.

...BUT, how this game actually connects to that dream of Fantasia, I am really, really, really struggling to understand.

The way they were talking about the fusion of music between Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody in that it will diverge into different covers of it including an orchestral version as you mess around seems to fit into a bit more modern visual art. The fusion of modern pop and classical seems like it would fit a Disney vision of playing with music from modern to historic and "Evolving" music. And at the time Fantasia was originally conceived, "Classical" music was still rather popular on the radio as well. So those decrying the use of pop songs are a bit off base since Walt was actually using fairly popular music at the time too. So I'm somewhat understanding the direction, and it could be a really neat little concept to play with in "Evolving" music from the past to the present and back again by using your hands to compose it.

I hope we get a good E3 demo out of it because I'd like to see the vision. And I'm sure Disney know what they are doing as well because like hell John Lasseter would ever let Fantasia of all things get dissed by some low rent Masshole punks (Kidding, kidding. Please don't stab me Mr. Drake)

Reading between the lines of that Harmonix guy's Twitter, it sounds like he's not thrilled that Disney chose this as the announcement trailer and thinks that gameplay footage would have much more accurately conveyed what they're going for.

Fantasia 2000 begs to differ. It did add jazz, but there was no "contemporary" music in it.

Yeah that seems like the case. Disney always tries to make everything appeal to a very broad audience even when it doesn't seem like a good idea.
