I don't understand how Phil can mark the game down because it's violent. You play a violent game, you're going to get violence... What do you expect?

"I later faced greater numbers of uninfected humans with less certainty that they were actually “bad guys.” Early on, I slowed down between encounters to ease The Last of Us’ tension; by the end, I was pausing because I felt like a bad person doing bad things."

It's a video game, it's not real life... Doing 'bad things' in a game has no consequence other than in the game if the system allows for it, and certainly not in affect real life.

I don't think I like how Polygon include the reviewers morals into the score. It happens all the time, just check out the Far Cry 3 review.

Feeling bad for doing bad things in a game can be a good thing.

Interesting interview with Mr. Druckmann:

http://m.ibtimes.co.uk/last-interview-neil-druckmann-naughty-dog-ps3-475066.html

"We had concepts of things like plants that would trap you and they were fully implemented," explains Druckmann. "Then a few weeks would go by and we'd say no, cut it, it's too much.

"We had entire cutscenes that were animated and finished, but people would come up to me and say this would be better if it was playable, and we'd end up throwing away all this work and recapturing it all. We toyed, in fact, with even cutting the infected out completely, because they were taking us into things we wanted to avoid."

Druckman adds: "We had to throw away big parts. Even if it was fun gameplay, if it was breaking the reality, we'd remove it. That's the policy at Naughty Dog: Nothing is precious."

I never do this because I think ALL game journalist reviews are shite these days, but:

I wouldn't care at all if Polygon gave the game a 1.0 or a 10.0 as long as they did a reasonable job justifying their position. But if you ever read their reviews, they don't. And if you saw what happened with Sim City, you know they have no integrity whatsoever and also no ability to actually critically analyze things, or else they wouldn't have missed the huge gaping flaws in that game.

Polygon is just a joke website for game reviews.

I think dissonance is something that needs to be taken seriously if video games are to move forward as a vehicle for interesting and unique narratives.
I can't speak if he's right one way or the other, I haven't played the game, but it very well may turn out to be valid criticism.

It may turn out he's full of shit and the game feels consistent the entire way through, too. We shall see.

Maybe it's just me but recently I'm seeing more reviewers forget that they are playing a video game and now are marking down games for not being realistic enough. I wonder what Phillip would give State of Decay, a 4 or a 5? Or should we give a bad score to a game like Left 4 Dead because all of it is so unrealistic. What if you're supposed to feel bad for doing it? Like in the Spec Ops: The Line mission, would Phil mark down the game because of that
one mission where you nuke all those innocent people?

im thinking about getting this, I've only seen like one gameplay trailer and want to keep it that way in case I do get it.

one question though (to people who have read all the reviews or played it), is this like Uncharted where there are sections that are just hoards of enemies every 10 minutes? that was one thing I really hated about that game.. I got a little better in UC2 (didnt play 3) I prefer the exploring/platforming so I'm hoping this game is more in that direction.

I don't own a PS3, but I have to say that this game looks fantastic. Looks like I'll have to borrow my friend's PS3 for the first time in years.

Ok, I noticed an 8 and a 7.5 amongst the 10s.

Is this thread more civil than the UC3 thread? Please tell me there's been no death threats.

I need to decide if I buy this at full price, or like GoWA, just wait a couple of months and pay less than half price.

A couple silly outbursts but definitely not nearly as meltdownish as the Uncharted 3 thread.

There were many many pages of rage about the 7.5, gamespot was just mostly ignored.

Sounds like a Naughty Dog game. Great visuals, world, and story but mediocre gameplay mechanics. I'll probably pick it up after a price drop.

It's safe in the last 20 pages

I agree, but judging a game on its violent nature when the game is rated R for violence, is a bit silly. It just seems like a cheap shot.

Omg, I might have to spend money on this damn game, I don't want to spend $60 on a game though, what to do? ;_;

On a second note, it's meta critic dropped below Galaxy's, thought it would've knocked it off the pedestal for a second...

I don't think it ever exceeded it.

Nah. The mechanics are fine here. In Uncharted they suck because Uncharted's premise requires an agile, sharp predator of a protagonist given al the platforming and shooting. Naughty Dog gave us an ice skating oaf.

In the Last of Us, you don't really notice whether the game play is tight or not because the pace of the game doesn't demand tight control.

ND WANTS you to avoid firefights, so on the occasion you do engage in one, you should feel a little more inept than you're used to.

Its all completely appropriate, and helps enhance the feeling the game wants to give you.

I just wish it came with the art book from the survival edition. For me, I always pick art books over statues.

I wouldn't worry too much.

I picked up my U3: Collector's edition for like $30 a few months ago.

Actually, I think this CE might be harder to attain since it was released in limited quantities by preorder but you never know.

The statues for most Playstation CE's don't do much for me so I'd prefer the art book too.

That and I have nowhere to put the statuettes, lol.

it fits Joel's character just fine... Naughty Dog has made it clear that Joel has done some bad things in the past

hell they specifically say "he's been called a violent thug, a brutal killer, and a torturer"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IcEYVJ66RI#t=09m42s (behind the scenes clip)

so tell me how it doesn't fit his character?

I would also like to know

Naughty Dog's protagonists seem pretty clearly defined to me, but somehow it seems so many people don't get them. Like people thinking Drake is portrayed as some everyman. No he is not.

I'm not defending Polygon, because they didn't bother justifying that violence comment either. It's Polygon's M.O. - they're fucking atrocious.

So many of the reviewers in the OP are, actually, including many who gave this game 10s, but Polygon in particular... if you can still read their reviews and not vomit after their Sim City scandal, you have one strong stomach.

I wonder how Phillip felt when playing Uncharted where you play a happy-go-lucky treasure hunter that mows down hundreds of thugs.

Two things: The Post Pandemic Edition end up costing $169.99, and it sold out the 3rd day after announcement. Now ebay resellers are selling it for $400+

Well the setting fits the violence. Unlike Infinite where it took place in this majestic beautiful city in the sky...

Joel and Ellie are locked in a post apocalyptic world that requires you to be violent in order to survive another night.

I love how Gears is considered "generic", yet it nearly single handedly pioneered and popularized cover based third person shooters.
Killswitch started the cover shooter craze, not gears.
No..no it didn't. No one gave a shit about Killswitch.

The guys who made Gears sure as hell did:

Bleszinski said the seeds of Gears of War were sown by three titles. The first was Capcom's Resident Evil 4, which made an indelible impression on Bleszinski even before its January 2005 release. "I really liked the pacing and the over-the-shoulder view," said the designer.

The second game was Namco's 2004 shooter kill.switch. Though it had much less success critically or financially than Resident Evil 4, Bleszinski felt "it had the best cover system at that time." He felt that incorporating a similar cover system would really change the pace of Gears and set it apart from other shooters.

Another inspiration was the classic arcade game Bionic Commando. In it, players must shoot a grappling hook to ascend from platform to platform vertically. Bleszinski thinks Gears has the same mechanic--jumping from cover point to cover point to advance--on a horizontal axis.
