FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

We haven't seen an official debunk yet? Christ. Hopefully this ends up not being true. If it is, Sony pretty much lost their last significant advantage over the XBONE. It'd be a really stupid move on their part.

This is making it a bigger deal than it is.

Lets say even if ps4 was more power, the games are still on the system that you like. No difference yesterday when it was more power than it is today with one being more power.

I really don't want to jump to conclusions, I don't know very much about programming for games. But, Jesus, nearly half the RAM dedicated to OS? This should at least assure that it runs well and is very quick in loading right? I think that 4-5GB should be fine at the start of the gen, but they should open up more as the gen goes on. Not really a deal breaker, not even that much for devs, it's just a little disappointing.

much? We won't really see any differences between the platforms.

What is clear is that the difference between PC and consoles this generation is going to be bonkers.
I would envisage the differences between the PS4 and Xbone will be greater than those depicted this generation. This is based on 'paper' however. Nevermind the RAM, the teraflop advantage the PS4 has is significant. There are really no two ways about it.

I wouldn't be so sure that the PC will steamroll the PS4/Xbone. It wasn't really the case this generation. Unless of course the PC is the primary platform.

Pretty much.

To go even further(stop me if this get ridiculous)
Sony basically upgraded the RAM by giving devs the memory capacity of a PS3 (.5gigs) for games and the OS, followed by leaving 4 times the PS3 RAM capacity on reserved for other stuff?
Not to mention this is GDDR5.
So why are folks canceling preorders?

Wow.

If you think this is a "big deal," Naughty Dog just ethered you. Naughty Dog. They made a game called The Last of Us. You may have heard of it.

Well then I better not hear any developer bitching about the amount of ram on the PS4 till the PS5 comes out then.

Devs already know and they are the ones that really need that info. If they never told devs about it I would agree with you.

I think when they build up the console as being gamer focused as opposed to the competition, supercharged PC with 8GB GDDR5 RAM then they need to be forthcoming regarding memory allocation. It's not like people thought all of it was being given to games but they could easily see a misconception is starting to appear about it using X GB for games and how people list it as a factor and how it all ties to the comments of Sony about them being the gamer's choice - then i definitely think they should have got ahead of the story and set the record straight. (in general, that's an info that should be always given in my mind).

Sony kept mum and now when it's revealed it's a bigger deal that it would have been if they said something, and which make them look bit bat and being misleading by not elaborating on the subject.

It's actually really surprising to me how little difference there seems to be between consoles and PC at the moment, I mean yeah sure you can crank up the resolutions and such on PC (which is quite taxing indeed), but polygon counts and texture qualities don't seem to be that different as of right now, like in my opinion, Crysis 3 on some beefy ass computers doesn't look that much better than say Shadows fall. Yes, you do get the advantage of framerates and such. But I think that gap as of right now has closed substantially. PS360 games look MUCH worse than PC games.

Mind you, that gap will widen over time. But these new consoles are pretty nice for 1080p gaming.

I don't get this, and what. More is always better, yes they can squeeze a lot into a bit of RAM, but perhaps more RAM, would have made the game 1080p, more open environments and etc. People who are annoyed are not saying 4.5GB is shit, but 7GB as we once assumed would have been amazing.

You are wrong. PS4 is still way more powerful and still the console for "gamers". That's how it is marketed and how the features are integrated. The RAM allocation doesn't matter at all, as long as devs are happy. Which they are. If devs simply can't use the RAM right now, it doesn't take anything away from that if it is allocated for the OS for now.

Just feels like I'm going to pay for a bunch of useless features since the OS needs so much damn RAM which could have been given to games instead, and I do believe that it will affect the exclusives in the future, I just don't know by how much, if at all. Anyway, just have a temporary FUD here lol.

Last of Us had a lot of low quality textures and glitches. It was only really pretty for a console game.

Isn't this how it normally works during a console's lifecycle? Early on a larger portion of the RAM is reserved for the OS, but over the console's life and through OS revisions more memory gets made available to devs? I'm pretty sure that's what someone who I would call knowledgeable told me, at least.

A truly disappointing carnival of stupid and I suspect it will continue for a long while to come. The cancelled pre-order posts especially, if there was even one dev complaining about memory restrictions I would understand.

well, everything I've seen looks great so far in the PS4 looks great, so...

besides, isn't GDDR5 much better than DDR3?

after that, XBone has 5 GB of DDR3 available for AAA games and PS4 will have 5.5 GB of GDDR5 available?

so, PS4>>>>>>XBone right? am I missing something?

What bothers me is the way that people are acting like having a large system area somehow has to be subtractive... like none of that resident code and library system can possibly be used by a game!

I really dont understand the 1 gig of "flexible memory".

So a gig of memory that isnt dedicated to the OS but isnt fully dedicated to gaming ether. Doesnt make much sense.
It's reserved. If devs need it Sony will unlock it immediately through a firmware update. They don't right now. In the impossible case they never need it Sony can use it for the OS too.

Yeah, since they seem to go down the same route as the XB1, loads of useless features that I will never use. In a couple of years more ram would matter for the exclusives.
When that time comes Sony will unlock more RAM and get the OS footprint down. Sony is covering their ass, nothing more. Devs will get all the RAM they need.

Quite a while ago, I was cheerfully trolling and wrote, what if it was 4+4GB configuration, i.e. 4 for games and 4 for OS. Oh how prophetic that little joke turned out to be.

Makes me wonder, given what we've seen from cards with 2GB ram, why didn't Sony just occupy 5.5GB for features and 3.5GB for games given if what KZSF shown is the future, then 1.5GB being reserved for non-GPU related tasks ought to be plenty. Nearly a 7 times increase. Lest we forget, that was the original figure anyway.

Plus, there is nothing like future proofing your console for one that no one would dare to guess upon.
Because Killzone is not the future. It is what devs need and can do right now. That's how Sony allocated the RAM. Devs mostly don't need more than 3.5 GB, Sony gives them 4.5 just to be safe. In the far future devs will need more and Sony will unlock more.

That confirms nothing. It could be true and he just sees everyone here as over reacting.

You sure are quick to downplay a ND programmer saying that the comments he is reading about in the articles are making him facepalm when inevitably these comments are discussing the same things we are.

It pretty much dictates amount of AA and texture res.

How powerful a GPU heavily affects the amount of AA as well. Since most games use some sort of deferred rendering, AA is either done by shaders or as a post processing effect (like FXAA). Using MSAA absolute kills performance on mid range and low end GPUs, especially the more you use so you would have to resort to lesser post processing techniques like FXX on the console with the weaker gpu. Also, a weaker GPU will not be able to access as much ram per frame as a more powerful one. Then there is also stuff like polygon counts, tessellation, all the various modern shader effects that are heavily impacted on what class GPU it's on.

Sony just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about RAM (I'm an expert), but the amount that is useable for devs and OS are huge parts of it. It's not like it is with Microsoft where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw gamers over regarding RAM availability, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public and devs, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase a PS4 or develop for it, they will buy a Xbox One instead which has more RAM available for games. This is HUGE (just like the amount of RAM available for gaming of the XB1 compared to the PS4). You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated the entire market with this move.

It's over, period. Sony lost their last ace, and that's the end of their PS4 hopes and dreams.

It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for PS4. Sony has nothing left, nothing they have can fix the hole now created. There is no reason left for anyone, hardcore or casual, to substantially invest in a PS4. Except if they want to play Driveclub. Which will suck because it won't be using 8GB of that glorious GDDR5.

Sony themselves took the last reason away that anyone would NEED to own a PS4 over a Xbox One (except GAIKAI CLOUD LOL GAMING), and the cavalcade of tiny indie titles that will be nice but won't add more RAM, it's just simply not going to salvage the bloated, underdesigned midget that is the PS4

There may be some hardcore gamers that stick around. Some did it for Gamecube too. But the last bell tolled. Maybe next decade.

The age of Sony is done.
