Edge: PS4 is your next console... maybe

Pardon the attention-grabbing title, but I found it fitting, bearing in mind what has transpired before. So Edge Online posted a new article:

Edge said:
After E3, the picture couldn’t be clearer. PS4 is your next console, we declared, but several months and Microsoft u-turns later, the next gen console race looks very different.

What follows is a pretty levelheaded look at the approaching console battle, with some analysts chiming in with their opinions. You can read the whole article here: http://www.edge-online.com/features/ps4-vs-xbox-one-the-state-of-play/

I thought it was an interesting read and worth posting, considering how much controversy the now infamous cover of Edge #256 caused here. Whether Edge is doing a mini-180 of their own or the whole bold exclamation was just a means of boosting readership, as some of us claimed, that's up for you to decide.

Good for them to balance things out.

AFTER the whole world has talked about EDGE for a month or so.

No, not really. I still don´t see a single reason to buy an Xbone over a PS4.

Did people forget that when Edge's article came out the X1 was probably the worst mainstream console ever? An anti consumer DRM machine? Sure, things have changed, but you can't really blame them for posting that.

I have no idea why such a cover would be considered "infamous." Isn't expressing a preference for one thing over another what gaming magazines are supposed to do?

Edge's article came out after the giant 180.

Microsoft's PR seems to have woken up. Great competition always ends up benefiting the consumer.

At the time I said that it was to spark discussion as nobody buys mags in the summer, and that print magazine opinions only have a 30 day lifespan anyway. Now it's reached the point that advertisers are booking media space for the winter, suddenly they appear more undecided.

I suppose the race in continental Europe and Japan will not be too interesting. All eyes on the UK and North America.

The launch games are better on the X1 in my opinion.

PS4 launch titles aren't all that bad too.

I don't think Microsoft can keep paying other studios to make games temporarily exclusive/exclusive for them...

Compare theirs with Sony's... it's not even fair. Long term, PS4 will have much better games.

Personally, I think launch games are close to a wash (Personally I prefer what the PS4 is offering at launch). But do people actually buy a new console for the launch games? I never have. I also think, considering the types of games that Sony has been outputting on the PS3 in the last few years, why people would doubt that they are going to have a strong line up. I think the PS3 line up this year is much stronger than laucnh stuff for either PS4 or Xbone.

XBONE has better games lineup (the games we know about naturally). I'd imagine that together with 180 Microsoft did would make it a purchase well worth considering. I know I would if I were buying a next gen system this year.

If you´re a fan of half assed/rushed games made by c tier developers you´re certainly going to have a blast with the Xbone launch lineup.
Most launch titles are rushed regardless of console.

I don't think you can make a definitive call on their games before seeing the final product either.

Yeah ... if they cost the same I could see an argument, but as of now they are asking for more money, have shaky leadership and untrustworthy policies.

Launch lineup wise, the indie support is more important to me and Sony is doing a fantastic job there. Also, Sony IP appeals to me a lot more.

No thanks, Microsoft.

Sure, to a certain degree, but games like DR and Ryse look extremely unfinished so far.

Turn 10 and Crytek are no more "c tier" (lulz) than Guerrilla and Evolution, that's sure. But it all comes down to tastes. I'll get both consoles at launch, but I'm much more hyped for DR3 than any PS4 launch game.

This doesn't mean I don't believe PS4 won't have fantastic games: it undoubtedly will, starting with Infamous.

Better hardware? That one can't be argued buddy. Even MS acknowledges.

That aint no opinion.
hardware numbers are machine benchmark, good games are for humans.

Turn10, Crytek and Capcom are no C tier developer, heck, even Double Helix is doing a great job.

And a launch title has never, ever, ever released in a different state from preview builds in the history of gaming.

Seriously, let's discuss quality of the launch games after we've played them. Genre preferences, fine. Past that, ehhh.

For me, the software difference at launch isn't even debatable which I'm happy EDGE pointed out. The PS4 software doesn't interest me at all. It's interesting that people are holding onto hope that a game like Knack will get mass penetration.

Who cares? You don't buy consoles that you're going to keep for 5+ years for the launch games. You're buying it for the games it's going to provide over its entire existence. Do you trust MS to support it that long?

I give you Turn 10 but Crytek....... And Guerilla and Evolution both have a track record ranging from solid to pretty good. Can´t really say that about Double Helix, Capcom Vancouver or Crytek.

Better hardware does not equate to a better machine, it never has.
Doesn't apply to this gen with the shared architecture. There won't be a vastly different approach to developing games for these consoles.

Also, it's more like better hardware at a significantly cheaper price in the PS4's favor.

I thought it was a bad ideab buying a console for the sole purpose of waiting for the better games to release. I mean, look at PS3 and the Wii-U.

Double Helix is unproven, sure. Capcom Vancouver made four Dead Rising titles, all of which proved to be very damn good. (Case Zero, 2, West, Off the Record.) Crytek's Crysis series also gets really positive reviews, despite sales. Just like Guerilla and Evolution.

All of those devs, sans DH, have a metacritic at around 74-85, Crysis being the only game in the lower 90s.
