You guys need to read the other threads

Most likely apply to COD GHOSTS also since it is a physical copy of the game.

Killzone SF is 39.7 GB if you bought it Digital, you have to DL the first 7.5 GB before you can start playing and it will continue to DL while you play.

If you have it on blu ray- the article states

"I think all things considered, this being launch and we've got like 2 minutes 44 from DISC to the first level and NO INSTALLS, I think it's already a massive improvement over previous generations"

You guys going crazy over nothing.

I'm glad that they'll be doing installs as mandatory now, means there'll be no slow ass streaming to account for during a games development. I want them to take full advantage of the systems and if that means installing gamea that's fine by me.

This. People don't realize how slow optical drives are.

Just an FYI to the uninformed:

All games are going to be fully installed to the HDD. No games will actually be played from Blu-Rays. The discs are just delivery methods for the games.
Never ceases to amaze me how so many GAFers still don't know this.

The general public is in for a surprise next-gen.

why not 1.5 TB makes more sense ?

Cant find a 2 TB ....2.5
That's not an SSD.

Surely there will be a load of game data/cache/whatever it ends up being called on the PS4?

Hmmm... I think I'll sit with my 500GB HDD till bigger than 1.5TB drives are out there, no point switching out the 1TB in my PS3 right now and fiddling with all my currently installed PS3 games, when it feels like it won't be adequate enough to last a whole generation especially with PS+.

Still between Killzone's 40GB and COD's 50GB... WTF!?

Dont the games install as you play them? I swear they mentioned that at the reveal. So unless I am making up features and am totally wrong its not like you have to wait to install the game again if you erase an old game and want to play it again in the future.

Well, I wonder how it works if say it's a game that you need to jump back in half way through.. or have a lot of things unlocked. So your game gets deleted or pushed off the drive.. probably would need the full install to access those parts of the game again. I mean this is strictly speaking about non-linear games where you want to jump-in and not start from the frickin' beginning.

That's not true, killzone needs to install 7.5 GB before you can play

The eurogamer interview states no install "...this being launch and we've got like 2 minutes 44 from disc to the first level and no installs, I think it's already a massive improvement over previous generations."

So install only applies to digital only?

Ok that's amazing. Good job Guerrilla.

That's only for the digital version. Physical version is just "pop the disc in and play".

"Bearing in mind that the Blu-ray drive on both systems gives up to 50GB of potential storage for games and that installation is mandatory on both consoles, that hard drive could fill up very, very quickly." - Eurogamer, June 2013 (this could have changed I'm not sure)

Also, 7.5 GB takes 5 minutes? i don't know about that

Okay, seems like for Killzone it's really fast, need to see this in action though

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
And this is why we're not even close to an all digital console. I have pretty decent internet for my area, and 49GB wouldn't be easy to do. It would be faster for me to just go to the store and pick it up.

Yeah, people will get better connections. But by then the game sizes will have increased, The goal posts keep moving further away, not to mention data caps which are becoming more prevalent.

This is probably for the best though, I'm expecting no load times. :|

That's not how it works... You put in the disc for the first time. The game will install the first chunk of data (a couple of gigs) which will take something liek 4-5min. Once that's install then you can launch the game and start playing. While you're playing the first level or so (whatever's included in the first chunk) the console will keep installing in the background so that when you get at the end of the first chunk of data the second chunk will be ready.

The disc will be spinning while you're playing the game but it will never actually run the game from the disc.

Nope. They said you don't need to wait before you can start to play.

"A similar system also works on Blu-ray, chunks are automatically copied to the hard drive in the background," said Brown. "This means that after the first few minutes your game can rely on having faster read speeds from the hard drive."

Brown said that this "provides a better experience for players" because it will be "a completely background process".

He added, "They don't have to wait for anything to install before playing the game. The game will launch as soon as the disc has been put in the drive."

That's for the ps4 right? So can you play games without the disc after you install them?

Disc installs will work the same way digital downloads work. You install the first couple of GBs which takes like 5min and then you start playing. While you're playing the console installs the rest of the game in the background.

It installs as you play, per Cerny

It sounds like we'll have to wait for all our games to do a partial install before we can start playing them from the disc.
This isn;t the next gen that was hoping for. I hope it's only 5 to 10 minutes max. I don't feel like making very many sandwiches.

The install to HD size ratio isnt that bad compared to previous generations.

launch ps3, 60gb drive, and say an 8gb install game comes to be about 13.3% of the HD's space

a 50gb install on the 500gb ps4 drive is only 10% of the drives space taken.

Granted last gen there wernt that many games on disk that required installs, but we will have to see if every game on this next generation will have such large installs.

Dont forget, 500GB drive is in reality 460-470, plus some space will be taken up by the OS.

Yes, but it installs it in the background while you're playing. So there's no waiting on an installation process before you can play the game.

No. The Xbox One was supposed to be able to this. But the DRM that is required for it, wasn't received with positive response by the majority.

Are mandatory installs only for PS4 or will XB1 have the same thing?
Both the PS4 and Xbox One have mandatory installs for physical games.

what the fuck? So this pretty much means that I will need a 2 TB harddrive for the PS4? I had no idea that games would not be running off disks.

It's not saying we have to wait 2.5 minutes each time we start the game though, right?

This is later in the article

"Guerrilla has completely eliminated in-game load times after an initial 30 seconds, and removed all logos and splash screens from the game's start-up routine"

That what it sounds like to me. The 2 1/2 minutes is the initial load. I assume some intro cutscene will mask the loading and after that its a quick launch

Haha, no.

Ok, I was about to drop a wtf! So I assume the necessary installation is because reading straight off of the disk drive is faster than optical drive.

Sounds about right. I might be able to last about a year but that's it.

What the hell is this bullshit? Are these guys insane, now I gotta wait 30 min for installs?

Not necessarily. If they're clever they'd do the "play as you install" method which Sony execs has touted before. Play the game while the rest of it installs in the background. 30 minute installs should be a thing of the past. No excuses.

Ahh OK. So it is installing despite him saying no installs. What he meant is no full-disc install. Good to know. Thanks for the quotes.
