Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

The other thing I'm noticing after putting it all together is that there aren't any "risky" characters.

Sakurai's rosters include wildly out of left field characters who in retrospect make a lot of sense. Wii Fit Trainer could be the only one we're getting, but with her revealed so early I'd expect another.

"Leak" rosters tend to either only pick safe bets or pick left-field choices that don't really make sense in the way Sakurai's weird picks do.

And this is why I think Sukapon has a good chance this time now that ROB and G&W are in. Of course Sakurai did say Sukapon was too obscure way back in the Melee days, I think he has better chances than Sheriff or say Duck Hunt Dog.

More power to Mewtwo King, but the game is being designed around the pro controller, it will probably feel best with what's available now. I remember Miyamoto saying the Gamecube controller would be the industry standard and nothing of the sort happened. With Smash guys though, you'd think it was true.

Thanks, everyone!

Her Forward Smash in Brawl is actually a pretty quick attack all things considered, it just couldn't kill very well until very high percents. Buffing the power and range of it, all while keeping its speed would be a great buff that Samus needed.

Also, something I'd love for Smash 4 is for Sakurai to cut back on the super magnet ledges that evade most on-stage edgeguard attacks. Marth's d-tilt edgeguard sets up for so many awesome things in Melee and Project M. Here's a quick example I did some time ago.

Those set-ups are really cut back in Brawl.

A tip for the fake leakers: don't list which characters were "considered" or "not considered." That's an instant giveaway.
Not that I believe that particular rumor since it's way too good to be true and every Smash game is going to have at least one major disappointment, buuuut...

After Lucas being 'considered' for Melee or the characters who were at least in Brawl's early days before getting scrapped, is it that weird that a hypothetical leaker would know about characters that had been 'considered' but have already been scrapped before the game comes out? I guess if the game winds up coming out as late as November/December it'd be weird someone would know who was going to get scrapped that ahead of time.

When you guys were younger, did you pick up the phone EVERY TIME Mr G&W used his taunt?

Atrosanity, we usually don't learn about considered characters until a while after the games are released. Even then we only know what was planned for Brawl through hacking. Sakurai stopped letting us know who he considered back in the Melee days. With Brawl and probably even now, he'd rather not reveal such info just in case he finds a way to include those characters in a future title.

Also listing every character then saying "lol but the Zelda character's a secret!!!! It's one of these two maybe!"

A lot of the genuine leaks I've seen, across different games, are literally just lists with no commentary or introduction, especially when it's production staff involved. Not all, of course, but I assume the less commentary you give, the less likely you are to be caught.

I'd be more likely to believe a leak that was just a list of characters, rather than one detailing how the poster and Sakurai considered certain characters.

It's very unlikely. The fake leak above implies a level of knowledge that only Sakurai or someone deeply involved in development would have. The few legitimate Smash Bros. leaks we've had have come in the months before release from people in QA and marketing, not the actual Japanese developers.

"Bowser Junior, Paper Mario and Daisy were never considered."
"There is a new Zelda character, although it’s kept a secret so far. The names heard most often are Tingle and Ghirahim."
"Wii Fit Trainer has a butt attack. It is replaced by a headbutt for the male costume."

Stuff like that is just laughable.

Well yeah, but a leaker isn't necessarily going to care about that, are they?

They're probably just padding out their lists with those sort of comments to make their 'leaks' stand out more, but if the game does indeed come out in spring it's not too weird they'd have also found out about characters who were pitched or planned but got the cutting block. Why they'd bother saying as much when there's a very small chance anybody would ever know one way or the other and be able to verify it (unless character data like in Brawl is left behind on the disc/game cartridge) is beyond me though.

Stuff like that is just laughable.
I'm not really arguing the legitimacy of the leak (already said I think it's fake, as much as I'd love Ridley/4 DK characters), I just don't really get how it'd be impossible if the game really does come out this spring for most of the staff (or at least modelers/riggers/programmers) to be aware of a couple characters who were planned and got to varying stages of completion before getting the axe. Like, I'm assuming some amount of Melee's dev team had to be aware that there was a finished Ganondorf model with a sword and standing stance finished before it got cut and then at some point got promptly resurrected as a falcon clone, and not just Sakurai and a select couple people, but I'm admittedly making assumptions about how games' developments both in the early 2000's and now are managed.

We will get legitimate leaks eventually. I bet not one of them will contain info about considered or planned characters that got cut.

We didn't get any leak like that with Melee or Brawl and I don't see anything like that happening now. Like Ryce said, that's info that comes from the developers themselves and the leaks come from marketing teams and such.

I for one would welcome leaks that spoke more about game modes and such. Even if they're 101% BS, they'll be a better read, as it'll force them to be more creative.

It's actually a TF2/Kid Icarus Uprising hybrid, and the classic-styled photos we've been seeing are all from the game's optional sidescrolling campaign.

Woah is it just me or does Brawl Samus' head look abnormally huge? Is that how it always was?

I'm loving all of the design changes to the characters So far. (thats what makes me so excited for veteran reveals.)

Heck, King Dedede's fur coat has me excited for the Ice Climbers!!

I picture a butt attack like peach's bair

I picture a headbutt like... Zidane style headbutt. or maybe Mario's up smash?

not sure how they're interchangeable. hard to believe an alternate costume will have different moves, even though that would be pretty cool.

Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab.

Oooh, he posted an extra comment!

Some other changes include:
-Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
-Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

I remember people bitching about how easy Brawl's edge-grabbing was to abuse competitively, so if Anthony or somebody else who knows any of this shit could come in and judge whether this all sounds for the better or not?

So if I've got this all correct:

- Something will influence who gets to hang onto the ledge and for what duration
- Grabs won't be unbreakable after 100%
- Ledge invincibility depends on how long you spent recovering and damage taken?

Woah! This is significant! I can't wait to get more details!

I wonder if characters will have invincibility frames for a few seconds after they grab or can I grab the moment after my opponent does?! So exciting!!!! In before Melee purists are pissed. ;)

That new edgegame meta. In before grabbing people's legs to haul them down.

This pleases me...Nice to see sakurai fixing things.

I'M FINISHED!

Um exCUSE me Sakurai but CLEARLY the best choice for Smash Bros would be my fav niche character HOWEVER you are clearly INCOMPETENT and

I know his vision for the games is Law, but I can't help thinking Namco's staff is influencing Sakurai toward appealing more to the core players this time.

Which is, of course, not a bad thing. Smash is versatile enough where you don't need to specifically design the game around casual play to achieve it.

It's neat to see him making this sort of updates, considering most of Miiverse won't really appreciate it to full effect.

Is he talking about ledges only? I figured he was talking about how get up attack/get up animation is slower when you're at 100%+

i don't know how to read this reaction

it's my "THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING" face

What exactly does he mean by the grab control? He's referring to ledge grabs, right? I'm not familiar with what he means by the 100% thing.
