I agree. I personally think the whole thing should be random. It's really lame to see the same people in the mob on every show.
If it were entirely random, you would have a lot of really shitty rounds. I'm sure part of the reasoning behind their method is to filter out the players who are goofing around, not paying attention, disconnecting, and, well, not terribly bright.
That said I can see the argument that the Mob and The One should be
weighted by score, but with an element of randomness. So it would at least be technically possible to be selected if you're in, say, the Top 1000.
Yeah, this annoys me so much. I will never be in the top 101 because there are some questions that I just won't know the answer to. And going by the top ten, you need to answer every question right and be fast. Even when I knew the answers 100%, I still couldn't answer fast enough to get close to the top ten.
You just need to know a lot of answers to get in or near the Top 100, the streak bonus is more important than the instant answer bonus (or at least, it's way worse to break the streak than to answer slowly.) And the Safeties, which give you everything but the speed bonus, help a lot in this regard. I've made the Top 100 in extended play a couple of times and once in the live show.
Yes, you have to be just about perfect
and fast to make it into the Top Ten. Yes, it's really really difficult to be selected for The One, but what do you expect? There are 30 - 60,000 people playing during the live shows.
