Missing the best movies from 2007 though. Stuff like Funny Games, Boarding Gate, Flight of the Red Balloon, My Blueberry Nights etc

All those are coming up as 2008 movies when I search. Funny Games possibly 2007, but we didn't get it here in the US until 2008. I would have listed Funny Games though.

2001 is the only year with 2 of my top 10, so I'll go with that:

Spirited Away
Mulholland Drive
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Royal Tenenbaums
Millenium Actress
Shaolin Soccer
Ghost World
The Man Who Wasn't There
Amélie
Monsters Inc
A Beautiful Mind
Black Hawk Down
In the Bedroom
Waking Life
Monster's Ball
Gosford Park
Moulin Rouge!
Donnie Darko

I always go by initial release since that means the movie was completed and shown then. Even if it's just for something like Cannes, it's still a finished product that's been publicly shown even if it's not widespread

2007 was AMAZING. It's between that and 1999 for my favorite year in film of my lifetime, but I think 2007 miiiight take it. In particular:

  • Zodiac
  • The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
  • Into The Wild
  • No Country For Old Men
  • There Will Be Blood
  • Ratatouille
  • Superbad (lol, this one sticks out in the group but I don't care)

are all among my absolute favorite movies of all time. I was happy to see NCFOM win Best Picture at the Oscars that year. IMO the top 5 movies on that list are ALL better than EVERY other Best Picture winner since 2000.

I was going to do a post similar to this (which is why I had the cover art handy). My favorite year is 1998. In no particular order....

I feel like we've already had this thread once or twice, specifically about 2007.

Yes it was a great year, even without padding the list:

There Will Be Blood
No Country for Old Men
Zodiac
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Gone Baby Gone
Into the Wild
The Darjeeling Limited
Michael Clayton

But of course there are other great years as well, some that have been mentioned here, and others that haven't (eg 1973)....

1999 would like to have a word with you.

Yup. Fucking ridiculous year. But it was merely the peak a part of a global superstorm of gobsmacking artistic quality in both film and games that started in about 97 and went until 2004.

It's definitely the best of the 2000's thus far, not sure about all time. But seriously, soooo great movies came out in 07.

Roger Deakins shot both No Country for Old Men, and Assassination of Jesse James, got nominated for academy awards for both, and then didn't win for either!

No year has ever had this quality and vastness:

  • There Will Be Blood
  • No Country for Old Men
  • Zodiac
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
  • Ratatouille
  • The Bourne Ultimatum
  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  • The Counterfeiters
  • 3:10 to Yuma
  • Juno
  • Hot Fuzz
  • Gone Baby Gone
  • Into the Wild
  • Eastern Promises
  • Once
  • Rescue Dawn
  • Persepolis
  • Sunshine
  • Away from Her
  • La Vie en rose
  • Atonement
  • Charlie Wilson's War
  • Paris, je t'aime
  • The Mist
  • Sweeney Todd
  • I'm Not There
  • The Darjeeling Limited
  • Grindhouse
  • Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
  • Michael Clayton
  • Knocked Up
  • The Wind That Shakes the Barley
  • Superbad
  • The Lookout
  • American Gangster
  • The Host
  • Lars and the Real Girl
  • The Savages
  • The Orphanage
There are other years with perhaps a better top 5 or top 10, but 2007 is the most impressive compilation of films from one year of all time. If I could only watch movies from one year for the rest of my life, it'd be 2007.

Yep. Deleted a few from your list but all of those films are at least good, with maybe 15/20 of them legitimately great.

None of my favorite movies are there. Lars and the Real Girl is good, but nah.

2004 true best:
Eternal Sunshine
KILL BILL
Shaun of the dead
Harry Potter 3
Mean girls
Primer
Life aquatic
Machinist
Incredibles
Anchorman
Dodgeball
Crash
Howl's moving castle
Kung fu hustle
Chronicles of Riddick
Garden state
The terminal
Team America
I heart huckabees
It's all gone Pete Tong

The Life Aquatic makes it the best year by default.

I wonder how long this discussion can go before you guys realize you can make this list for almost every year.

Surprise! Tons of great stuff is constantly coming out every single year.
