Alice Liang's 1up Podcast

Suzzopher

Member
This week, Alice Liang holds Frank Cifaldi, Justin Haywald, UGO's Tracey John, and you, the listener, hostage in the podcast room. The conversation starts innocently enough with this week's hot ticket news items, Red Dead Redemption, and Super Mario Galaxy 2, and then mysteriously wanders into the realm of erotic gaming. But sanity is restored with a quick chat about E3 wishes. And stick around for a bonus Alan Wake spoiler segment with 1UP's very own Alan (Johnson).

1UP now consists of 4-5 versions of the same podcast (1up yours minus everything good) + retronauts and atb. Why?

Is she the girl who always seems like she doesn't know what's going on in previous 1UP podcasts? If so, no sale.

EDIT:

Yup, think you're right. Sorry, Alice. Didn't mean to hate. ;)

I already don't like Alice on podcasts (I like her opinions and whatever fine, but I don't think she has a good podcast voice at ALL), but then they have a guest on using skype which is always a horrible horrible idea. I'm a few minutes in and deleting.

They realllllly should go with Ray hosting, although Frank's was fine. I've got enough podcasts in my rotation where I have no problem dropping this if they go with Alice though (no offense).

ugh, I can't listen to 1up podcasts anymore. Between every likable personality leaving and Jeremy's insistence on long-ass music interludes every 20 minutes I just can't listen anymore. Man, to think a year ago they had all the best podcasts no-contest.

They skyped in a guest on this show? That is the absolute worst. Just don't have a guest rather than skype one into an otherwise everyone-in-a-room show.

It's really tough listening to 4G1U after having Garnet's show back.
1Up just doesn't have the personalities for this type of show.
ATB and Retronauts are great though.

These podcasts have really been on the decline. That said, I obviously haven't listened to this particular show yet, but I'll give it a chance.

But overall 1up has really faded into obscurity for me. Their last few podcasts have been pretty weak, they've lost most of their best staff, and going to the site isn't even a consideration, save for random game reviews. I know I'm giving them shit, but point is, it's kind of sad. They used to be the best. Or at least, one of the best.

Hmm yeah not really liking the idea of someone skyping in. Surely they must have had some other staff available. I'll still give it a listen for sure though.

OT a bit but I was disappointed that they shitcanned the Sports Anomaly podcast. Even though it was a bit all over the shop at times I still enjoyed hearing from some different voices rather than the same 10 that seem to stretch across all of 1up's podcasts since their staff reduced in size so dramatically.

Does Todd Zuniga still write for 1up? It just seems like everyone who was on that podcast has since left the site, so there's actually no reason for it to be a 1up podcast anymore.

And hey, at least 1up hasn't pulled an IGN and started an all girl podcast.

Nah once Ellis left it was like you say all former employees doing it. Didn't sound like it was their idea to drop it though. Todd seemed a bit down as he announced that next weeks would be the last one.

I don't really understand that view. But then most podcasts I listen to/watch are built around skype. like the whole TWiT network.

It's mainly when only one of the participants is not in the room that the problems arise for me. They never really manage to get fully involved with those that are together in the same room and it tends to stunt the conversation a bit.

Not as much of a problem when everyone is on skype as i'm a fan of out of the game, the anomaly and playerone.

edit: although I should really listen to the episode before sounding so negative. Probably won't get a chance until monday though.

is SD tv really the standard for people who own a 360/PS3....man I hope not but I really have no knowledge to back that up
Well something like 30% of console owners this gen have their consoles connected to an HDTV, and only 10% or so have them connected with the correct cables.

Just on the 360 alone, Epic set the bar at 50% connected to an HDTV, and less then 20% connected right.

So yes.

SD is still king this generation.

good grief, pull the plug on this amateur hour mickey mouse nonsense. So sad to watch the slow and painful de-evolution of 1up's former glory.

This ain't the same. Having everyone on skype or a similar program can work just fine for some podcasts, but this is just a phone pointed at the mic in a room full of people talking.

The whole podcast is a train wreck of uninteresting dialogue and factual inaccuracies that piles up minute after minute until it hits the 2:30 mark. It's embarrassing that a professional outlet is so incapable of putting together something remotely worth listening to.

Thought Alice did a great podcast. Totally wouldn't mind her as a regular host.

I remember the rap on 1up before (talking 4-5 years ago) was that they were a bunch of smug gamers who relished in coming off like elitists, and thus drove a lot of industry people crazy. Thing was, I NEVER got that impression. Everyone seemed super cool, articulate, and down to earth. Hence what made it great. Incredible stable of personalities.

But now, after the continued mismanagement of almost all their podcasts, I kind of think that description above holds a water. A lot of the people they have on these podcasts, outside of Ray and a few others, just come off as jerks who don't know what they're talking about.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's been the impression I've been getting from them for a while now as a long time fan who's given them more than a fair chance after everything that went down a year ago.

Yeah, they haven't sold their new hires well and any of the old people left were never really known for being on the general news flagship podcast.

IGN's Gamescoop is generally shit now and they resort to giving love advice, but at least it has an identity.

I haven't listened to this yet, but I loved the Ray-cast so please make Ray the new host! All in all I like the show a lot more since Garnett left (sorry Garnett, but I think you have enough fans to get by...) so I have high hopes for this podcast... if Ray gets to host :D
