That just looks....bad. I'll try to hold my judgement till I actually see the show, but I'm definitely not holding my breath.

To be fair, if you just saw just a pic of Benedict Cumberbatch without ever watching the show, you might think it's questionable too just from looks.

Jesus god. <roger> That trailer is....horrible. </roger>

I mean this is going to just be a procedural right? There is no other way I can see it happen. It also seems he is just emulating Cumberbatch.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Honestly, I think the people calling this a rip-off of BBC's Sherlock are missing the mark quite a bit.
This feels much more like a rip-off of The Mentalist without the psychic part, and that show is just a knock-off of the much superior Psych.

Everyone feels like they're phoning it in. Especially Jonny Lee Miller.

So yeah, they just turned it into run of the mill procedural cop show. Go figure...

Why can't it be both?

I realize that I've been biased against this show from the first time I heard about it so I tried really hard to watch that with an open mind but ... no. It just looks worse than Sherlock in every possible way. (Incidentally, CBS expressed interest in re-making Sherlock before Elementary was announced, in case you weren't yet sure that this is a rip-off.) I'm still wondering what the hell Lucy Liu meant when she said that Holmes' companion has "historically been known as John Watson". He's a fictional character FFS.

What the hell in every possible way....

What's confusing about that? In the history of Sherlock Holmes from books, to shows, to movies, to games, and so forth, his companion has been known as John Watson.

It's the phrasing. The character hasn't simply "been known as" John Watson -- the character is John Watson. It's not just a historical thing either; the contemporary film and TV adaptations have all retained the original name. I think what Liu said was a disingenuous attempt at making the change not seem as significant, but I could be mistaken.

I would actually totally watch this show if Sherlock got everything wrong.

Like, he had really intriguing and convoluted theories (like the marble+floor indicating a safe room in that trailer), but it always turns out that he's wrong.

And yet he never loses his confidence and certainty. And maybe Lucy Lui could act like Penny from Inspector Gadget, secretly fixing and solving things behind his back.

That I'd watch.

For an episode or two.

Man, it looks pretty terrible.

I love how one of his brilliant deductions that no one else gets is "there were clearly two glasses here because this is a lot of glass". That is something anyone can figure out and shouldn't be used to show deductive reasoning.

Hold on. Why didn't you like him? I thought he was the perfect villain to his Sherlock. Both actors played it perfectly.
You liked that greasy, sniveling doctor evil wannabe? Really? For all of its (many) faults, the Sherlock movie nailed the part of Moriarty.

Looks kind of boring. And I can see the main character's antics going to bother me in the long run (even though I like JLM). But then again I hate procedurals.

A modern reimagining of Without A Clue?
I'd be game.

Really we just need a new series of Inspector Gadget that isn't made by terrible people.

Apparently the actual trailer that CBS will release in a few days makes the series a lot more appealing, but we'll see.

It could be some nice escapist fun, like most shows on CBS, but I seriously doubt it'll be anything of note. And that's probably a-ok to everyone making it as they laugh to the bank.

You're reading way too into an off-hand comment.

Yes I did. Andrew Scott played the opposite of how Cumberbatch played Sherlock. He was Off and loud when Sherlock was calm and collective. And when Sherlock was off and loud, Moriarty was as calm and collective as Sherlock was. They played off of each other perfectly.

Yeah Andrew Scott grew on me big time. In his first appearance of course he was....unconventional and didn't work at all.

But after Series 2...God damn. Worked so well.

Maybe it's a reference to the fact that unlike in previous incarnations where the character is called and known as "John Watson", this one is actually known as "JOAN Watson". It's quite a departure even for a supposedly 'inspired by Sherlock Holmes characters".

Here's hoping Moriarty in this version is good. Can't be any worse than how he was in Sherlock.

Am I the only one that does not give a shit about this show coming out?

You clearly care enough to let everyone know you don't, so I dunno.

There's nothing wrong with a modern Sherlock Holmes take - I don't even think Moffat's was the first, but it might have been the first popular one - but man that video looks bad. It just looks like someone smooshed Sherlock and The Mentalist together to make a one-liner stew.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I'll give this a chance. I have low expectations, and I doubt they will be able to come up with compelling and interesting cases on a regular basis...but a new Sherlock is a new Sherlock.

Hm...

ELEMENTARY stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare — a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, The Restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he's devised his own post-rehab regimen — resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock's police contact, Capt. Tobias "Toby" Gregson (Aidan Quinn), knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crimes, it's simple deduction that he's going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it's elementary that it's a job for Watson.

I love the BBC Sherlock, but I'll check this out. CBS gave me my favourite new show Person of Interest this season, maybe Elementary will turn out well.

This loooks horrible, and it looks like Miller is doing a bad impersonation of Cumberbatch or something, he totally pales in comparison. And Joan Watson?! Seriously?! BURN iT WITH FIRE!

Yeah, this is utter shit. This is somehow so freaking American that it makes me puke red white and blue.

I hope this gets canceled before they even hit the season apex.

The yank Sherlock looks like a hipster douche retard.

I just noticed that when they find the body, Watson runs away in disgust/fear. Isn't Watson supposed to be a doctor? Why would a dead body frighten her?

Will drop pants for Sony.

It does. I think I will watch a few episodes before making a judgement but i know i will be comparing this to the BBC show.

I feel exactly the same way, almost everything about this show is an insult to Arthur Conan Doyle and I want it to flop hard.

Have you guys seen the preview trailer? Dear god..

The backlash is outstanding. 832 likes, 2,671 dislikes; that's a full red bar.

It will be interesting to see a British Sherlock and an American Sherlock air concurrently, get to see the cultural differences and how they each approach the material.

But yeah, the show seems like it was made by committee and made to offend as little people as possible (the standard for mainstream shows).

i actually think it looks decent. and i know i'm in the minority who doesn't like cumberbatch as sherlock. something about his intonations
