David Jaffe: Sad, frustrating, potentially super disrespectful news dropping tomorrow about Playstation

well...you care that they care. that is even worse.
That's true, I care that they care because it's just difficult to avoid this when it's all over the place, you know? I don't want to care myself but it's hard when annoying people keep yapping back and forth.
It used to be, 'Sonic is better' 'no Mario is better'
Now it's 'my company made this many sales' 'yeah well your company is firing a person. It's doomed.'

i guess I'm just disappointed? I don't know lol

he’s going on Colt Eastwood’s podcast to among other things discuss Spider-Man 🤨

edit: anyone wanna bet that it’s going to largely be a discussion centered around the narrative the Xbox evangelists have been pushing that it’s the buggiest game of the year?

It wasn't. Colt tried to steer it in that direction and Jaffe pretty much said he'll take a few bugs if it means yearly amazing releases from Insomniac. He did get to talk a little bit more about the Connie stuff, but nothing new.

Shawn Layden escorted out of the building? 🍿

Hermen was pro "cutting" of Japanese studios? Seriously? Then there's more reason to be opposed to his current position.

Its no wonder the old spirit of PS is kinda diverging from what they used to be. Now its getting clearer as to why.

Sounds like FUD and BS

GG and Kojima are tight. Why would Hermen want to cut them?
-The cancellation of Factions made a lot of PlayStation studios upset causing internal turmoil. Between that and the GAAS direction, Sony blamed it on Connie Booth and fired her.

People beleaving in this bullshit are just dumb. Why would "a lot of Playstation studios" being upset about a game cancel on Naughty Dog?

Maybe they worked on the project.

What time is it?

I'm not saying I believe these rumors, but if ND is failing to release games, maybe other studios are being asked to pick up the slack or having their development cycles cut short in order to fill in the gaps.

Well, the part about Jim Ryan is not exactly a leak, everyone knows that. Maybe I should create my own Twitter and spread obvious things saying those are "leaks.
There was a post on 4Chan that said Ryan was fired as well and they’re letting him “retire” to save face.

It would make sense for both sides to save face if he was pushed out. Last thing Sony wants is for people to think they lost faith in his approach. Games take way too long to develop to quickly pivot direction.

is nice to see Sony having their ass on fire. Really bad PR since that awful showcase.

If what David "I don't do clickbait" Jaffe is saying is true

i wonder if:

A) Are they having issues in paradise?
B)Are they are holding on?
C) Are they just pivoting in messaging?

then A seems more likely. (with a sprinkle of C)

Now, this is when the track record is relevant. Sony has been able to quickly fix their internal bullshit. So, theoretically speaking we shouldn't have a Redfall, Crackdown 3 Or Driveclub type of disaster. At worst, even more time between First Party releases.

But the interesting aspect is that, i don't think sony can't drop the GaaS initiative at all. They have to deliver variety in their first party portfolio. They need to figure out that pipeline.

Wasn't there a study released in the last few years saying "Fake news spreads 5x faster than the truth on social media"?

Gaming discourse leans overwhelmingly towards single player gamers who despise GAAS. That means they're susceptible to click on, and believe, fake narratives about GAAS being bad / a failure.

We seek out information we want to believe and people like Jason Schreier + David Jaffe know how to frame things that are technically true, but framed dishonestly.

I'm sure there are people in PlayStation who don't like the GAAS direction, but who, what percentage, and how does that compare to the people who don't like the single player, or VR, or Japanese, or quirky, or big IP direction we've seen PlayStation pursue over the years?

That's where journalism comes in and this industry is devoid of that.

When you shift leadership from Japan to the west, there will be a massive shift in culture. All this was predicted years ago.

Most of this sounds fucking stupid, ESPECIALLY Hermen's part. I love how they say Japanese studios in plural, was Polyphony Digital shut down too? It does not look like so.

All the talk about Japan Studios recently is tiring. Those guys don't develop a single great game by themselves in the last 10 years, and Sony still have given chance after chance for them. The best work from Japan Studios are being a support studio for third-party devs, and guess what, Sony already have xDev for that.

Santa Monica, Insomniac and Sucker Punch have work at TLOU Factions? Don't makes sense.

Altrought, I doubt they are just cancel a game who was in development at NAUGHTY DOG for years.

Naughty Dog have done enough for Sony over the years that they should be allowed release their vision for their game. Not Bungies vision who are just in the door.

The Bungie criticism wasn't even that the game was bad. Just that they don't think it'll hold a long term player base.

Newsflash 99% of multiplayer games can't do that. That's not a reason to cancel a game. At most delay it.

Even still I'd rather a great game I play for two months then a game where the aim is for it is to last forever. It's an unsustainable aim and only happens with one in a million multiplayer games.

Can you name any multiplayer games, outside of traditional CoD and sports games, that couldn't hang onto long term player bases and were considered successful?

You can't be embracing the Live Service era and waste resources on multiplayer games that fizzle.

"We don't like the GaaS direction but we're so angry that you cancelled the GaaS game!"

Seems like it's a bit of a shit show over at PS studios right now. Given the mediocre last Showcase we all knew things weren't going smoothly. I mentioned it before but the waste of talent at Naughty Dog for the past 3 years is unbelievable.

Naughty Dog has a hold on people like no one else. It is one of those studios that defines a console generation, and they are so afraid of ND, always has been. It's so funny.
This is definitely a more recent positioning for ND. When I say recent, I mean ps3 onwards.

Before, they were definitely a good studio but their titles weren't worldshakers til they landed on Uncharted 2.

Let's not revisionist history them.

I agree. ND has become a different studio altogether since PS3, when they released Uncharted 2. Now they are capable of making massive waves in the industry with each game release: Uncharted 3, Uncharted 4, Uncharted LL, TLOU, TLOU 2, TLOU remake.

All those games have defined their respective generations and showcased a huge gulf between ND and their competitors.
