Digital Foundry: Performance Analysis: The Evil Within

id Tech 4 was a weird one but I will say that Doom 3 still looks and moves beautifully ten years later. It holds up a hell of a lot better than its contemporaries. Have you seen Far Cry 1 lately? Yuck.

Yeah I'll give them that. Though the models have this weird plastic feel. Not necessarily bad but very clearly "doom 3". Everything was much smoother and rounder than Half Life 2 though. Just wish I liked the game more (I didn't hate it, but I'm not sure I'd replay it any time soon)

Tango Gameworks, like MachineGames, is owned by Zenimax. They didn't have a choice.

It cost a lot of money for Carmack to make that engine, and by God, they're gonna get more than just Rage out of it.

Then zenimax's support is just dreadful. A cross-gen game on top of the letterbox handicap and still the performance is outrageously bad.

It's the same case with The Order.

Some of these "cinematic" devs don't know what they're doing/talking about.
The Order at least locks Galahad into a specific position on screen so the player can adapt to the FoV. In TEW, Sebastian can move freely in the letterbox and the camera can get screwed up because of it.

while I certainly understand that some people are more sensitive to framerate than others, and some people care more than others, for me it varies by game -- and while I agree with everyone else that 60 fps as a rule is always best regardless of genre, (TLOU RM proves this) the absence of it is felt far more in some games than others.

In the case of TEW, this is a game lavishly adorned with various filters, effects, glows, and carefully thought out, highly contrasted lighting. With this overall soft and "well-mixed", for lack of a better term, look -- The presentation isn't as sensitive to framerate as that of, say, an action heavy FPS or a racing game.

So, yea, this is a game with a highly processed presentation and suspenseful pacing. I'll admit I've noticed a few dips in framerate, and the fact that this is mainly right at the beginning of the game is probably feeding the hysterical reaction we're seeing from some, but as an entire experience -- I just wouldn't characterize this game as one with a particular framerate issue. It, yes, feels fine to me.

It'd be such a shame if anyone missed out on this terrific game because they are so preoccupied with letterboxes or small fluxuations in framerate. Games like this don't come along every year. Anyone who liked RE4 or likes survival horror is doing themselves a horrible disservice if they pass on this over something technical.

if serious, case in point. what a shame.

Please. Really, please. Make Ghost Song locked 60 fps or more. It deserves no hitches, framepacing issues or lower framerates.

Doom uses id-tech 6. so I think it's safe to say that id-tech5 is already dead.

John Carmack's Id-tech 4 was a complete and utter mess and id-tech 5 is a complete failure. this guys is past his glory day for sure. good thing that id-tech 6 will be Carmack-free.

Surely Tiago Sousa is fixing IDTech at the moment.

After playing it yesterday on PS4 and hearing the XB1 ran fine I was contemplating getting that one instead...well, lol. Guess some people really can't be listened to about performance.

The frame drops are really bad and I don't know why the hell it's happening with what's occurring on screen. I seriously hope they can fix it somehow.

Reading this is somewhat surreal to me. I've been playing the Xbox One version since yesterday, and I was pleasantly that the performance seems pretty stable. I've encountered a few noticeable dips in spots, but nothing even remotely like what this article seems to be suggesting.

Not really surprised at these numbers.

id Tech 5 is a really poor engine for use on a console, ESPECIALLY on a console like the Xbox One. (Assuming they are using MegaTextures)

The engine has had problems ever since it's initial release with RAGE, GPU vendors really had to optimize their drivers and even then to this day, support by AMD is incredibly sketchy.

I just wonder how well this game could have looked and ran had they just used Unreal Engine 4.

Funnily enough, ive found the framerate to be solid so far on PS4. The IQ is also insane at times (0__O)

The only real rough edges I have seen so far is maybe 1-2 seconds of chugginess and some of that nasty Tech 5 pop-in in some of the cutscenes. Other than that and some of the bad voice acting for Sebastian, the game itself is still pretty great.

Sounds genuinely terrible. Unfortunately example of trying to leverage third party tools/engines not working out too well. No way I;m keen to touch this on console given this analysis and Xbox owners in particular should be wary I guess.

After Wolfenstein and given the huge black borders (not something I'm against in principle if used well for framing BTW) so not hating on the borders themselves) this should run better than this.

It's on PC too? Been so focused on Alien Isolation this has kind of being pinging away vaguely on the edge of my upcoming games radar and I haven't checked it out much although I do like a good horror game.

I really loved what I played so far. (Just CH.2, pity my schedule) But the performance on PS4 is heartbreaking. This would be astonishing if it could just run at a solid 30fps. I'll take reduced effects.. please!

I was going to buy this for PS4 in 30 minutes and you turned me off guys.

You should still get it. The performance isn't game-breaking, just annoying. It's a great game, esp. if you loved RE4/Siren/SH2.

I was not against idTech5 in WolfensteinTNO because Machine Games optimized game to work and look really great.

But I don't know any Japanese devs who are strong with engines from the west. Capcom created nice engine with MTFramework, Konami is riding the wave of FoxEngine, Square is fumbling horribly with their engines [CrystalTools, Luminous], but they rarely work with western engines...
Guilty Gear Xrd is amazing to look at (Unreal).

Also I'm going to play this on the Xbone. I have to believe it will run better than the last gen consoles.

Game seems like a technical mess regardless of console. Tango must have had a rough time with iD Tech. I cant imagine it had much Japanese documentation so I can see why.

But God Damn @ XB1 version running at GTA4 on PS3's vertical resolution.

The game does not look that visually demanding when compared to some of the other titles currently out. So, in all honesty, I can't believe that the machines weren't equipped to handle this level of fidelity.

When I think about it, I would have LOVED to see TEW developed on the FOX engine. It would be the perfect match.

You'd think Bethesda would send them some people..

Crap optimization, crap engine. Take your pick.

It's on PC with a locked 30fps and an unlock for 60fps, though the 60 isn't solid at this moment. Bethesda said they'd work on it.

Yeah, after MGS and PT, it's clear that it's a very versatile engine that would probably have been much better suited to this game.

Is this the last idtech 5 game? This engine just needs to die. Wolf was the only game to use it well, and even then it wasn't that great. I'll pick this up when its super cheap, hopefully its just RE4 again.

Nope. TLoU Remastered delivered an even set of frames at 30 fps. This is much worse.

Obviously not all of them. I did this one, though, and the recent Ryse one.

How does it run on a PC with a Radeon R7-265? I would expect well considering the 750Ti runs it well but it might be a title that favours Nvidia hardware so it would be interesting to see it.

If it hits a steady 30 FPS @ 1080p on the R7 265 then it seems like an unoptimised mess just like Sleeping Dogs:DE is on the consoles.

Giantbomb was talking about this as well. With the PS4 version a lot of the frame drops come at completely random times and seems unrelated to the action that is going on. I am guessing there is some underlying things that destroy the framerate in certain locations that can be avoided depending on play style.

Steady 30 FPS at 3200x1800 on the PC, nice to have good IQ after the horrid aliasing nightmare that was Wolfenstein. Shame the console versions sputter about in such a way, who knows what horrors they did to the engine given all of the dynamic lighting and intractable objects are in the game. Both Rage and Wolfenstein were pretty static games(Wolfenstein had cover you could shoot out though)

I'm enjoying the game but it's technically a mess. I'm not that sensitive to framerate but it's very jarring. The texture pop in on cutscenes is the worst. There was one yesterday where a severed head hit the floor in what was supposed to be a dramatic quick cut but it was initially just a pink blob before the textures arrived a little bit later. Complete ruined the moment.

Parts of the game are really ugly too - chapter 6 is gross. I can't understand why a cross-gen game is running so poorly. There is no excuse.

I can't believe this shit. New generation and we are already dealing GTAV levels of performance.

Because people buy that shit. They do not understand and keep on buying just like lemmings. And marketing believes their strategy is good and working. Well it is, but where is the breaking point, really? A game with that level of performance is atrocious and only people who lost any sense of serious craftsmanship and playability over the years can enjoy shit like this.

This is somewhat true. It's the maps that are the problem not the action. The maps which suffer from performance drops run poor regardless of whether there are enemies on screen or not.

Wolfenstein seemed to be decent, in spite of the engine though. The only thing that impressive about ID tech was getting a shooter to run at 60 fps last gen, at the expense of crazy texture pop in last gen and ridiculous file size. Congrats on the decade of work to make that I guess.

To it's credit, GTAV on PS3 has a lot more going on visually than this game, so to me that makes it even more of a "wtf" moment on how they handled both consoles. The PS4 & Xbox One, especially with the black bars should be running the game easily, but something in that engine is jacked up to have them perform the way they do.

No doubt. Its a shame tango is owned by Zenimax. They probably pushed Carmack's engine on the team to get some money back on the failure it was.

If it was Mikami in charge of that, he probably would have used UE3 again, which was most likely a much better choice.

True

Shadows of the Damned turned out pretty well actually as far as tech.
