I'm getting all kinds of confused right now - so was their video based off the actual Switch game or did they do some kind of "custom PC to look like Switch" type test?
I'm getting so many mixed messages in this thread lol
"They shouldn't have ported it if they couldn't reach 60fps" is an astounding conclusion to make.

I see. So they used footage of something NOT the Switch game and just spoke about their impressions? No off-screen footage at all?
But according to the OP Digital Foundry states "it's a good port".
Then they shouldn't have bothered porting it in the first place.
Rocket League is 60fps tho.
It must be painful for you to watch TV or movies, poor man.
I think you would honestly collapse if you played a Switch. For your personal well-being, I don't think you should use one.
I know it's wishful thinking, but I'd have 0 problems if they downgraded the graphics even further to get this to 60fps. Doom is a pretty game but textures, lighting and model density is the last thing I'm thinking about when I play it.
30fps was a pretty obvious compromise. Doom is one of the BEST looking games around, it was never going to run at 60fps on the Switch brehs. About time some of you accept the obvious technological gap between the Switch and the other consoles.
Why should you be the judge of that? I have no problem playing games at 30.
Are you really comparing a twitch shooter to a film just because it's shot in 24FPS?

Kind of hope more AAA ports keep happening so reality can come back to this board about switch's capabilities.
Yes, though I sincerely hope you're right. Is it naive of me to think that people won't be getting hysterical two years from now every time we hear the news that a port of a AAA current gen game on Switch is compromised compared to its counterparts?
Switch is my only home console right now, so I'm not trolling here, but I feel like a game such as Doom should be running at 60fps. I'm not even shitting on the game, I'm still happy it's on Switch, and I know that most consumers don't care about such things, but for me it is important here.
Just as an example, I don't care if something like BOTW or Mario Odyssey runs at 30fps, but for FE Warriors I will be using the 720/60 option, because I feel that framerate is more important in a Musou game than bumped resolution. Same idea with Doom.
They shouldn't port a game if they can't make it play good doesn't seem a that far fetched thought to me.
540p is the handheld resolution correct?

Their performance comparison is by proxy, having made a PC build they feel was similarly specced and seeing how it ran. They felt the Switch port - undocked - ran better than their PC build.
You shouldn't be too concerned about DF cos GAF thinks it is a bad port.
Edit:
[*]Resolution is lower on Switch, dynamic, unsure of exact count
You know that 30fps is actually playable?
I mean, sure it's not 60, but to say it's not worth porting because of this is weird.
You gonna quote posters abd show some proof or just continue to driveby system War shitpost?

Saying that "60 fps Doom" is good is an understatement. Doom on Switch sounds good. Comparatively, Doom on PC was excellent.
As a portable experience I'm still on board. If it tanked to unstable degrees on the regular, then I'd be willing to question the necessity of it.
I haven't seen the video. That's not what I'm talking about.
I'm a huge fan of the game because of its performance and buttery smooth framerate on on the other consoles. It's really apart of the "feel" of the gameplay. Jumping from glory kill to glory kill and running around a arena type area needs 60fps. If they couldn't hit 60fps, they should've passed on porting the game and ported something else. I'm usually okay with a drop to 30fps, but not DOOM. And for those who haven't played it yet, it will be dirt cheap on other platforms.
Hopefully, they will see the backlash and call in some optimization wizards to hit 60fps.
He said it "hurt his eyes". The style of gameplay has nothing to do with 30fps physically hurting you (ie. it's hyperbolic bullshit).
On games like Doom? Please do share. You are really asking me for proof on people downplaying the importance of 60FPS when comparing PC and console versions?
That... that I wasn't expecting lol.
Note that although he did play the game on Switch, there is no actual footage of the Switch version in this video
Rip and screen tear.
3DS version of a PS360? No, more like a Vita version of a P360 game, that indeed happened.I dunno, it gets a little offputting for so many threads to be wondering about switch versions of current gen games though when you know the only way that's happening is if the switch version is crippled. It's cool when they can do it, but as a happy switch owner...I don't see why anyone wants them to make stuff like that, I understand not everyone owns an Xbox or a PS4, or maybe you want something portable for some reason, but it's really not different power-wise from asking for a 3DS version of a 360 or PS3 game, and that wasn't exactloy a common request. It's like with switch specifically people go 'oh but it's nintendo's home console' and completely lose sight of the power differential.
then why post a video instead of just writing an article about it?
christ.
Destiny 2 runs at 30fps on consoles yet plays wonderfully IMO. I think expecting 60fps for a game that was demanding for PS4/XB1 on a much smaller and less powerful piece of hardware is expecting way too much.
Some ports can be just bad ports. It's not a critique towards Switch. Bad ports can be criticised and in the end they will just hurt Switch rather than help it, creating the false impression that there isn't a market on Switch for these kind of games.
Hopefully Skyrim will sell well enough to keep Bethesda on board even if DOOM fails. Who knows, maybe enough people won't care about the quality of the DOOM port and it will not fail in the end.
I expected 60/720p docked at least given the significant visual downgrade.

I played Bloodborne at sub-30fps, I can play DOOM on the go at 30fps.
