Can anyone tell me where to go in-game to invert the vertical axis camera? I literally cannot play this without vertical inverted camera.

It is quite well made overall. The boss fights are amusing too. While they may not be as complex as Hyrule Warriors from what Ive seen about that game. This title still makes fights pretty fun. Plus good number of enemies all over the place. While generally I do not put much stock into the amazon japan reviews, the game is sitting quite high at 4 / 5 stars for the PS4 version with 240? reviews.
It's been a while, but as far as I remember, boss battles in HW required you to use an item at a certain timing and then mash attack.
I really wouldn't call that complex :p

Its still different from what we usually have in the series which is just keep hitting target till it dies. In terms of the general design that they usually do with the Musou series Id call it "complex"

Im just glad that this game did not have any real QTEs and stuff like that.

Finished the game at 23 hours or so with a bit of meandering that happened because of stream settings and farming a few enemies. So it's pretty squarely in 18-20 hours, I think. I actually let the game sit for 5 hours because I had to go door some stuff so my timer was at 28 hours, lol.

Overall, I enjoyed it immensely. Definitely more Action RPG than Musou with the party setup and the story structure in place. It still felt very Dragon Quest too, even ignoring the fact they included DQ characters from the other games. It just has that feel to it down.

Graphics - Very pretty game and I like that they perfectly captured Toriyama's designs using a more conventional 3D style. Skills looked really pretty, the maps looked great, and the CG was fun. I think the biggest complaint I have in this area is that the frame rate needs to be stabilized. It's 60 in some areas but then the action gets heavy and the effects go nuts and it definitely drops. The home base that you go back to is oddly choppy too for some reason. I really don't understand why. If they can get that done, it'll be perfect though.

Sound - I'm not as into music as other people but it sounded great. The SFX were on point as well, all of the classic DQ ones were in the game and sounded fantastic. The voice-acting was solid though I really don't like Mirei Kiritani as Meer. I don't mind her as actress but there's just something about her VAing that bothers me. Toori Matsuzaka worked really though. Only other notable one for me was Yangus. He is so wildly different than I would have imagined him in Japanese but it ends up working pretty well.

Gameplay. The core combat system works really well. Each of the characters really end up being pretty different because they didn't map them entirely the same and the spread of skills was pretty good. So that variety was pretty welcome. Only Meer and Act were clones, which was to be expected, so you can definitely find a char you like. Monster coins ended up being a lot more fun than I expected though it could be a little messy from time to time.

I think the biggest thing for the gameplay though was that they spent a lot of time designing maps and encounters which really kept it fresh. Lots of different terrain and layouts in addition to spawns kept it from being too same-y despite the fact they only used 3 types of objectives for most of the game. The boss fights were pretty good too. First few were a little more gimmicky but the later ones kind of lose that for more standard fights.

The accessory alchemy is pretty much straight out of DQX with fusing two items together to get a different effect. It's nice to have that. I' actually wish they had extended it to equipment so that you could choose your favorite weapon model and buff it up. I'd be a pretty happy camper if they added that.

One area I'd like to see them is to give characters more skills so you can build your favorites up in the way you want to. As it is currently, all of the characters get different roles so you always end up losing one particular skill if you don't bring a certain character. Attack up, Defense up, defense down, healing etc are all mapped to only one char so it's a little annoying bringing another char but losing out on something. You can mitigate this a little with the skill system but it's not quite the same. So more skills for each char would be really nice. It'd also make it more RPG like.

Story & Characters - Definitely a DQ adventure and I really like the original characters. Dirk and Julietta are pretty great. The DQ chars from the other games are a great too. Meer and Act serve their roles as protagonists well. If there's one thing I'd complain about it's that there's not much chatter inbetween story maps so the character gag for Meer and Act get a bit grating as you go through the game. It's nice to have the quirk but I didn't need to hear it so often.

The story is pretty standard DQ. Light and Dark, balance etc etc. I did like the Yggdrasil and Dark Dragon connection though, that was pretty neat. The main villain, whom I've dubbed DQ-Nobunaga, was pretty in line with other DQ villains aside from his look, lol. I wouldn't mind another adventure in this world though they'd really need to do some crazy stuff to make a sequel in this setting, lol.

I'm definitely looking forward to the DLC and hopefully a sequel down the line.

So you thought of DQ-Nobunaga too? haha most def.

Good write up! Nothing in there that I disagree with. Im still going through the game but my playtime is around 27? hours maybe. Im leveling a bunch and collecting resources for making accessories and stuff.

Really is a bit of a letdown that the alchemy pot didnt allow for upgrading your weapons and such. Was hoping that would have been a feature considering all the other games with the alchemy pot it is. Plus gives more of a reason to keep your older equipment and such.

Though one missed thing I thought was the lack of a casino. Was really hoping for one. Am not cleared with the game yet, but Id imagine we are not going to get one yet. Would have been a hilarious way to lose / win more small medals / waste gold.

I could really go for a full-fledged DQ game in this action style if they did it right. This has the skeleton but lacks the in-between stuff that defines the single-player DQ experience. So if they managed to get that in, it'd be pretty amazing.

This seriously is a good DQ experience for a spinoff title. Agreed, if done correctly it would be pretty awesome. Its nice to see that the title is being received quite well too. So hopefully that will push it towards a direction of getting a good sequel.

Oh, man... a Dragon's Dogma style Dragon Quest game is what I'm picturing. Except with the ability to switch between party members. That would be completely awesome.

In terms of this game, I'm still really enjoying it. In fact, it continues to introduce new things that make me like it more. I'm working my way through the Dwarf kingdom at around 7 hours in.

Cleared the game, took me around 21-22 hours. Did quite a bit of side stuff (maxed almost all upgrades). I really liked the gameplay, but couldn't enjoy those tower defenses sequences until the very end.
Definitely less musou-ish and repetetive than Hyrule Warriors.
I think I'll keep playing those mainline DQ games after all. :)

My only gripe with the game is the party members standing there doing nothing when there are monsters near them. Seems like they only attack large monsters.

I don't really have a problem most of the time because I am just running around killing things and don't notice.
But, when I'm sitting there fighting like one of those gate keepers or random stronger enemies, and there are no other enemies around, then it's pretty jarring. Like, I am literally standing here fighting this guy by myself, and you guys are just watching. Thanks. At least cheer me on or something fuck.
I think it stands out more than other musou games here especially, because it is just you and your 3 party members. It's not like the field is littered with generic officer allies and hundreds of paper soldiers that don't do anything. This is supposed to be Dragon Quest, with my party, but I am fighting by myself.
Like I said though most of the time it isn't a big deal.

Id really like them to fix up the free missions a bit for the next game. Or at least give them some sort of random objectives, since currently felt a little lacking with how you had to run around to different sections of the map to get enemies to spawn in other locations and such, then repeat.

Im guessing after clearing the game they let you redo story missions?

I haven't checked before selling my copy, but since it's treated like NG+ (although there's no starting from scratch, you're back on the ship as if nothing happened) with stronger enemies and such, I'm guessing that's the case.

And I agree with the free missions, as they are now, it's basically a way to grind money/exp/drops and kills for sidequests.

Speaking of sidequests, to be honest they got really boring for me after clearing the first half of the game. I still got the trophy for "many quests cleared", but for the last half/1/3 I did only quests which increased the amount of healing stones/material slots etc.
Also the drop rate for some quest items is super annoying. Having to spawn one-two specific groups of enemies in a free quest for half an hour just to get 2 drops is not my idea of fun. It was also one of the reasons that I'm happy that the game wasn't longer.

Great to hear, was buying this anyway but my concern was it was more a Musou than a RPG

Do we know how well its selling?

Overall thoughts after completing the game. Started with Meer and took me little over 30 hours, but I left it on for quite long time while eating and stuff so the real play time would be around ~27 hour.

I am not a Dragon Quest fan. The only DQ game I played was DQ 8 for about an hour. So I don't have any background knowledge of DQ games.
I am also not a Musou fan. The last Musou game I played properly was DW5 in PS2 I think. I did try out some other Musou game demos when they were up on PSVITA and PS3 (DW vita and Onepiece Pirate Warriors I think)

Visuals - Overall it looks really good. The artstyle is fantastic. At first I was worried about this 3D artstyle which looked like Blue Dragon. I initially preferred the Cel-shaded look of DQ8. But after playing this game, I got to love this new artstyle and I really hope future DQ games (either Heroes or main number titles) continue with this artstyle. The character models are fantastic and looks quite close to the cutscene models. The lighting is also great and spell effects looks flashy. 1080P/60fps also makes the game great. The IQ is great and I didn't really notice much frame drops (but I am not really sensitive on framerate so don't trust me too much on drops) The only problem I have is the lack of AA and AF. Hopefully sequel will have better AA.

Sound - From title screen music to the ending, every music was really good. Since I haven't played past DQ games, I don't know how many of the tracks are from the past DQ games and how many are new for the game. But every music felt great and There wasn't any track that I didn't like.

Gameplay - There has been a lot of talks about the combat, whether if this is Musou game or not. I am not expert on Musou games but from my past experience, there is definitely resemblance of Musou combat system. Basic character movements and combo structure feels similar to Musou games I have played. Also the horde of braindead enemeis coming at you feels like Musou game as well.

However, there are many key elements to the combat that makes it not 'just another Musou game' for me. You fight as 4 member party, with ability to switch character at any time. While the party AI is not spectacular, it doesn't matter too much since you can switch to any member at any time. Sometimes you need to tank the enmey attack by guarding with the shield, freeze enemy and attack, heal when you HP is low, and etc. This gives the classic RPG feel that I haven' seen in Musou games.

The boss battles are very fun in this game. They are quite challenging so if you mindless mash buttons, you will die. I think they did fantastic job with difficulty in this game where it's fun and a bit challenging at the same time, while not really frustrating. Also some strong enemies that appear with smaller enemies give you some challenge that makes the combat fun.

Monster Coin is a system that really surprised me. When they announced it, I thought it was just a gimmick that wasn't really going to be useful. But when I actually played it, I was surprised at how well it was implemented, and also how important it was for the combat. As the game gets harder (the game does get quite challenging later on), Monster Coin is key to helping your combat, especially for tower defense type of mission (there are lots of them!).

You get 12 characters, which is kinda low for Musou game, but they are quite unique. Meer and Act, which are the main 2 characters, are pretty much the same except fire/ice elemental difference. But other than those 2, the rest of character feels quite unique. Even Terry, who uses same Sword/Shield like Meer and Act, feels quite different when you play him.

Story - I don't know how usual DQ game's story is, but DQH story was quite standard. I didn't think there was anything special, but at the same time I didn't think there were anything bad. The main characters are great, each with their own unique personalities. I really liked Meer&Act's personality. The other DQ guest characters are not as significant as main 4 but thats not a surprise. The dialogue was good, and voice acting was good as well. I was worried that Meer&Act's VA were not actual VAs, but I think they did good job. Helmut's VA was fantastic. Cutscenes were also good.

Some things I didn't like/wish it would improve

-The map is really small for most part, and missions are short in some cases so it breaks to flow.. Also the small maps makes it feel less of an adventure.
-The mission structure is basically: tower defense/escort/kill enemies and proceed types. The problem is there is way too much tower defense missions. While tower defense in this game is quite fun, I wish the missions were more varied out, with more missions that just ask me to wipe out the enemies.
-The combos/movesets are small. There is no variations and improvements in combos. Each character gets small combo sets and 4 skills. While some attack/skills have variations/improvements later on, they are too small.
-Side missions become tedious sometimes. Killing xxx number of monster gets annoying especially because of the map's enemy re-spawn structure. I wish there were some fun variety in missions(and map designs).

Overall, I really enjoyed the game. I got this game when I bought Metal Slime PS4 and at the time I honestly didn't have much expectation for this game. But after playing it I can't wait to play the free DLC contents in the future, and inevitable sequel.

It sold through 70% of it's first shipment for day 1.

thats pretty impressive considering how large the shipment numbers must have been considering this particular title.

amazon seemed to be sold out of its normal stock and all the marketplace hyenas with their shitty prices were displayed instead. Id imagine they would be getting a restock this week.

First day shipment was estimated to be a cumulative 500,000 units for PS3/PS4 (Excluding metal slime PS4 sales + digital sales) and a second shipment was expected during the first week as well.

So we know that sell in is at least over 500k as of day 1.

there is text and such but the main question is what will they do about the voice acting as there is a fair amount of that. personally if they want it to sell more in the west they will need english VAs.

cant really judge any sort of time frame as we have no idea when they started localization.

Highly impressive if it did do over 500k day one as outside of like pokemon and such its pretty rare these days.

Bigger question is how much of that was PS4 sales.

good question. one thing i noticed granted its amazon info that the ps4 version rated slightly higher than the ps3 one. still am very interested in seeing what the actual breakdown will be.

Well I said ages ago that I'm expecting the PS4 version to become the best selling PS4 game in week 1 which means I expect it to sell more than the 150k for MGS5: GZ.

That is adding the software sales from this first week to Metal Slime downloads as well btw.

(Knack doesn't count)

would not be surprised esp that the outlook with the title has been highly positive. Am sure the longterm sales will be decent too as how the game is getting a lot of positive impressions from consumers and fans.

Game came in the post this morning. I've played for about two hours or so. Just beat Gigantes tower defense bit. Had to say I was caught off guard with the tower defense stuff, lost one of the missions because I was concentrating on one area too much. The game plays really well, I like the dodge move, psyching up for tension is a lotta fun too, nice sense of risk to it.

Graphics are pretty nice on the PS3 version, characters sometimes look like puppets! Not sure if the voice acting is good or not, but some of the jokes are hitting well through animation alone.

Completed the game in 42 hours, i've done all the quests, i only have the last ones you get after finishing the game left to do and the second stages of the treasure/hideout you unlock on the maps (the timed ones you unlock after doing a GOLD time), some of those are REALLY hard, my characters are almost all L45+ and they're getting destroyed.

Got the game! Played for about an hour and a half, is there infinite time missions, where its just kill as much as you want?

I felt like I was doing one, as soon as you get the airship and can access the world map, I chose that city/town in the top with an exclamation point, but it didn't seem to end after 20 minutes of straight up killin'.

Excellent, my copy is on my hands! So, the included PS+ code... do I need to enter a JP credit card to redeem it?

Unless they changed things yeah I think you do need to have a CC registered or something like that is what I remember a long time ago when I attempted to register some codes.

Great. Finally.

Welp, guess I'll forget about that free PS+ dlc.

Its kinda stupid since they only allow for Japanese CCs to be registered which =s they hate expats in the country pretty much. Since its a pretty dumbfuck thing to assume that anyone living here is going to have a Japanese CC also.

While I understand the very, very basic reasoning why they think its a good idea its still a very stone age way of thinking these days with the highly global market / international type of world we live in these days. Its not like Sony is some tiny ass company that cant deal with these sort of things either.
